Book A Comparison of Satellite observed Sea surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean

Download or read book A Comparison of Satellite observed Sea surface Temperatures with Ground Truth in the Indian Ocean written by Ants Leetmaa and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daily worldwide sea-surface temperature maps are produced by the National Environmental Satellite Service. For the first half of 1975, sea-surface temperatures recorded on these maps were compared with concurrent ship observations in the Indian Ocean. Additional comparisons were made with historical data. These show systematic differences between the satellite and sea-surface observations. The satellite-derived temperatures appear to be too low along the equator and along the East African coast in the vicinity of the equator. Furthermore, in April, May, and June the areas off the equator (and not along the coast) appear to have temperatures that are too high. Although the mean differences are not large (1°-2°C), the fact that the errors vary in time and space made it difficult to apply the satellite data for oceanographic interpretations.

Book An Evaluation of the Use of the Earth Resources Technology Satellite for Observing Ocean Current Boundaries in the Gulf Stream System

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Use of the Earth Resources Technology Satellite for Observing Ocean Current Boundaries in the Gulf Stream System written by George August Maul and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing of ocean color to locate current boundaries has been tested in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Infrared techniques fail there for several months of the year because surface thermal signatures are destroyed by summer insolation. A 1-year time history of the Gulf Loop Current has been made by ship in synchronization with the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS). Shipboard measurements of upwelling spectral irradiance show that the color change across the cyclonic boundary is associated with changes in chlorophyll-a concentrations and changes in the volume scattering function. Surface chlorophyll-a, temperature, and scattering observations show that color signature of the current is present when thermal indications are absent, and thus this flow can potentially be monitored by a combination of visible and infrared techniques. Shipboard observations indicate that seastate changes frequently occur at the cyclonic edge; this is recorded in ERTS images which show that the current's boundary can be detected by changes in either color or sea state. Theoretical spectra of upwelling irradiance confirm that surface reflectance changes due to meteorological conditions spectrally alter ERTS radiances. The gain settings for the satellite are not optimized for ocean radiances and hence computer enhancement of the data is required. The ship data demonstrate an annual cycle of growth, eddy separation, and decay of the Gulf Loop Current, but this could not be reproduced with ERTS due to the 18-day orbit cycle and because the sensors were not designed for ocean radiance levels or spectral distributions. This research supports the concept that a visible ·multispectral scanner, which supplies at least daily observations, is capable of providing triweekly pathlines of the Gulf Loop Current.

Book Operational Oceanography in the 21st Century

Download or read book Operational Oceanography in the 21st Century written by Andreas Schiller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade the significant advances in real-time ocean observing systems, ocean modelling, ocean data assimilation and super-computing has seen the development and implementation of operational ocean forecast systems of the global ocean. At the conclusion of the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) in 2008 ocean analysis and forecasting services were being supported by 12 international centres. This book is about ocean forecasting - a maturing field which remains an active area of research, and includes such topics as ocean predictability, observing system design, high resolution ocean modelling and ocean data assimilation. It presents the introduction to ocean forecasting which provides a foundation for new opportunities in areas of coupled bio-geochemical forecasting and coupled atmosphere-wave-ocean forecasting. The book describes an updated account of research and development to improve forecast systems, determining how best to service the marine user community with forecast information as well as demonstrating impact to their applications. It also discusses operational centres that are now supporting a range of real-time ocean services including online graphical and data products for their user communities and their feedback on the quality of information. The contents of this book are aimed at early career scientists and professionals with an interest in operational oceanography and related ocean science. There are excellent opportunities for exciting careers in the emerging field of operational oceanography in order to address current and future challenges as well as provide the supporting services to a rapidly growing user community.

Book Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth s Climate

Download or read book Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth s Climate written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is an integral component of the Earth's climate system. It covers about 70% of the Earth's surface and acts as its primary reservoir of heat and carbon, absorbing over 90% of the surplus heat and about 30% of the carbon dioxide associated with human activities, and receiving close to 100% of fresh water lost from land ice. With the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, notably carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, the Earth's climate is now changing more rapidly than at any time since the advent of human societies. Society will increasingly face complex decisions about how to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change such as droughts, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, species loss, changes to growing seasons, and stronger and possibly more frequent storms. Observations play a foundational role in documenting the state and variability of components of the climate system and facilitating climate prediction and scenario development. Regular and consistent collection of ocean observations over decades to centuries would monitor the Earth's main reservoirs of heat, carbon dioxide, and water and provides a critical record of long-term change and variability over multiple time scales. Sustained high-quality observations are also needed to test and improve climate models, which provide insights into the future climate system. Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth's Climate considers processes for identifying priority ocean observations that will improve understanding of the Earth's climate processes, and the challenges associated with sustaining these observations over long timeframes.
