Book Toxic Communities

Download or read book Toxic Communities written by Dorceta Taylor and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncovers the systemic problems that expose poor communities to environmental hazards From St. Louis to New Orleans, from Baltimore to Oklahoma City, there are poor and minority neighborhoods so beset by pollution that just living in them can be hazardous to your health. Due to entrenched segregation, zoning ordinances that privilege wealthier communities, or because businesses have found the ‘paths of least resistance,’ there are many hazardous waste and toxic facilities in these communities, leading residents to experience health and wellness problems on top of the race and class discrimination most already experience. Taking stock of the recent environmental justice scholarship, Toxic Communities examines the connections among residential segregation, zoning, and exposure to environmental hazards. Renowned environmental sociologist Dorceta Taylor focuses on the locations of hazardous facilities in low-income and minority communities and shows how they have been dumped on, contaminated and exposed. Drawing on an array of historical and contemporary case studies from across the country, Taylor explores controversies over racially-motivated decisions in zoning laws, eminent domain, government regulation (or lack thereof), and urban renewal. She provides a comprehensive overview of the debate over whether or not there is a link between environmental transgressions and discrimination, drawing a clear picture of the state of the environmental justice field today and where it is going. In doing so, she introduces new concepts and theories for understanding environmental racism that will be essential for environmental justice scholars. A fascinating landmark study, Toxic Communities greatly contributes to the study of race, the environment, and space in the contemporary United States.

Book Environmental Contaminants in Fish

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants in Fish written by Derek C. G. Muir and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarises and interprets the analytical results for various organic chlorine contaminants in fish collected from northern Alberta river systems and also compares the observed organochlorine levels with the regulatory limits set by Health Canada. Major organochlorine groups detected were polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT- and chlordane-related compounds, toxaphene, and chlorinated phenolics. Background information is included on the properties, uses, toxicity, sources, environmental fate and transport, and bioaccumulation of the contaminants studied. Results are given for such fish species as mountain whitefish, burbot, northern pike, and longnose sucker, and for concentrations observed at locations downstream and upstream of known sources of contaminants.

Book Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners and Chlorinated Pesticides in Fish from the Yamaska River Basin Qu bec

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyl Congeners and Chlorinated Pesticides in Fish from the Yamaska River Basin Qu bec written by Janice L. Metcalfe-Smith and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to compare concentrations of PCB congeners and organochlorine pesticides in bottom-feeding fish between the two study sites (Yamaska and Noire rivers), and to determine the distributions of these compounds among various organs and tissues. Data on the occurrence of individual PCB congeners in biota are rare in general, and these are the first to be reported for the Yamaska River. The document also describes a modification of a commonly-used technique for extracting lipophilic chemicals from biological samples. Fish were also analyzed for a target list of 44 organophosphorus, triazine and amide pesticides and 20 acid, basic, direct, disperse, mordant and reactive dyes currently used in the Yamaska River basin, but were not found to contain detectable levels of any of these compounds (R.J. Maguire, unpublished data).
