Book A Guide to the Formulation of Plans and Goals in Occupational Therapy

Download or read book A Guide to the Formulation of Plans and Goals in Occupational Therapy written by Sue Parkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide for occupational therapists introduces a tried and tested method for moving from assessment to intervention, by formulating plans and measurable goals using the influential Model of Human occupation (MOHO). Section 1 introduces the concept of formulation – where it comes from, what it involves, why it is important, and how assessment information can be guided by theoretical frameworks and organised into a flowing narrative. Section 2 provides specific instructions for constructing occupational formulations using the Model of Human Occupation. In addition, a radically new way for creating aspirational goals is introduced - based on a simple acronym - which will enable occupational therapists to measure sustained changes rather than single actions. Section 3 presents 20 example occupational formulations and goals, from a wide range of mental health, physical health and learning disability settings, as well as a prison service, and services for homeless people and asylum seekers. Designed for practising occupational therapists and occupational students, this is an essential introduction for all those who are looking for an effective way to formulate plans and goals based on the Model of Human Occupation.

Book Knocking Out Parkinson s

Download or read book Knocking Out Parkinson s written by Allison Hill and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, modified fitness boxing has become a popular activity for individuals with Parkinson's Disease to engage in. Unlike traditional exercise, modified fitness boxing allows for participants to engage in full body exercise, as well as remain engaged cognitively. The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a modified fitness boxing class for individuals with Parkinson's Disease had an effect on overall quality of life. The study looked into specifics of completion of ADL/IADL activities and coping strategies before and after participation in the boxing program. Participants completed a paper survey containing multiple choice and short response questions pertaining to their experiences before and after partaking in the boxing class. Overall, participants did not report significant performance improvements with the majority of ADL activities that are related to quality of life. Nevertheless, every participant reported improvement in quality of life after participating in the modified fitness boxing program. While some improvements, such as in sleep, pain levels, and ability to complete routine needs, were associated with increased QOL, most participants reported QOL improvements were largely due to increased engagement in leisure and social participation, as a result from being a part of the boxing group. In addition, these leisure and social opportunities led to companionship, acceptance of disability and a sense of belonging. Given the results of this research, occupational therapists may not be able to justify incorporating group fitness boxing into interventions in order to improve ADL performance. However, leisure and social participation are two occupational areas that occupational therapists address. Considering the progressive nature of Parkinson's, and the impact this has on treatment priorities, occupational therapists can use group fitness boxing with Parkinson's patients in an attempt to improve quality of life by increasing engagement in leisure and social participation.
