Book The Cambridge Companion to August Strindberg

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to August Strindberg written by Michael Robinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: August Strindberg is one of the most enduring of nineteenth-century dramatists, and is also an internationally recognised novelist, autobiographer, and painter. This Companion presents contributions by leading international scholars on different aspects of Strindberg's highly colourful life and work. The essays focus primarily on his most celebrated plays; these include the Naturalist Dramas, The Father and Miss Julie; the experimental dramas with which he created a true modernist theatre – To Damascus and A Dream Play; and the Chamber Plays of 1908 which, like so much of his work, exerted a powerful influence on much later twentieth-century drama. His plays are contextualised for what they contribute both to the history of drama and developments in theatre practice, and other essays clarify the enormous importance to these dramas of his other work, most notably the autobiographical novel Inferno, and his lifelong interest in science, the occult, sexual politics, and the visual arts.

Whether viewed from the friendly or the unfriendly standpoint, it is equally strange that such a body should have come into existence when it did, and that it has not only been able to withstand the shocks it has had, but actually to have grown stron ger proportionately with the bitter unfairness of its ad versaries. One class of critics say that this fact strikingly proves a recrudescence of human credulity, and a religious unrest which is preliminary to a final subsid ence upon Western conservative lines. The other see in the progress of the movement the sign of a world-wide acceptance of Eastern philosophical ideas, which must work for the reinvigoration and incalculable broadening of the spiritual sympathies of mankind. Book Aleister Crowley And the Practice of the Magical Diary

Download or read book Aleister Crowley And the Practice of the Magical Diary written by James Wasserman and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important collection includes Aleister Crowley's two most important instructional writings on the design and purpose of the magical diary, John St. John and A Master of the Temple. These were the only two works regarding the magical diary published in Crowley's lifetime. Both were first published in Crowley's immense collection of magical instruction, The Equinox. John St. John chronicles Crowley's moment-by-moment progress during a 13-day magical working. Crowley referred to it as "a perfect model of what a magical record should be." A Master of the Temple is taken from the magical diary of Frater Achad at a time when he was Crowley's most valued and successful student. It provides an invaluable example of a student's record, plus direct commentary and instruction added by Crowley. With commentary and introductory material by editor James Wasserman, Aleister Crowley and the Practice of the Magical Diary is the most important and accessible instruction available to students of the occult regarding the practice of keeping a magical diary. This revised edition includes a new introduction by Wasserman, a foreword by noted occult scholar J. Daniel Gunther, revisions throughout the text, a revised reading list for further study, plus Crowley's instructions on banishing from Liber O.

Book Three Books of Occult Philosophy

Download or read book Three Books of Occult Philosophy written by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Three Books of Occult Philosophy's vast store of magical lore has been so influential that occultists have been drawing upon it for the past five centuries. This classic work was first published in 1531, and translated into English in 1651, but it has never since been reprinted in its entirety. Now--for the first time in 500 years--editor Donald Tyson presents these writings as Agrippa intended them to appear: wholly complete and free from the hundreds of errors made in the original translation. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the most complete repository of pagan and Neo-platonic magic ever compiled. This book is packed with material you will not find elsewhere, including copious extracts on magic from obscure or lost works by Pythagoras, Pliny the Elder, Cicero, Ptolemy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other authorities. Donald Tyson's detailed annotations clarify difficult references and provide origins of quotations, even expanding upon them in many cases in order to make Agrippa's work more accessible to the modern reader. As well as providing extensive insight into the foundations of the Western Esoteric tradition, the Three Books of Occult Philosophy is the ultimate 'how-to' for magical workings. It describes how to work all manner of divinations and natural and ceremonial magic in such clear and useful detail that it is still the guide for modern techniques. And the extensive supplementary material--including biographical and geographical disctionaries and appendices--provides quick reference to many previously obscure matters in classical magic. The Three Books of Occult Philosophy is an essential reference tool for all students of the history of ideas and the occult tradition."--back cover.

  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book The Diary Of A Drug Fiend written by Aleister Crowley and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Light illuminates the path of humanity: it is our own fault if we go over the brink." -Aleister CrowleyAleister Crowley was a noted and controversial occultist, ceremonial magician and poet. He has been called "the wickedest man in the world, or "The Great Beast 666, or "The Master Therion", but he remained a highly influential figure over Western esotericism and the counterculture. "Diary of a Drug Fiend", is his first published novel, and is also reportedly the earliest known reference to the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily. Crowley took as his example Dante's "Divine Comedy" partitioned off in three parts of the same triptych: PARADISO, INFERNO, & PURGATORIO, which affords him to delineate all these aspects of what it is to be a drug fiend. The story is enchanting and you are swept up into the pages about the ecstacy and agony of drug usage. The realism presented here no doubt stemmed from Crowley's own dabbling with the various powders. Intoxicating, powerful, often incredibly disconcerting, this book is a tour de force by a truly great novelist. In summation, this unusual book is a classic must-read among lovers and aspirants of Literature, scholars and historians in the field of drug addiction and psychology. This novel is also recommend to students of the occult, as it serves as an excellent introduction to the Doctrine of Thelema.

Book Old Diary Leaves

Download or read book Old Diary Leaves written by Henry Steel Olcott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Diary Leaves: The Only Authentic History of the Theosophical Society Organization may be in a position to refute the slanders which, even at this date, echo in some quarters round the name of Mme. Blavatsky. The building and formal installation of the Adyar Library, with ceremonies of an unprecedented character conducted by Indian pandits, Buddhist monks, Parsi mobeds, and a Muslim maulvi, are described, and numberless details of the growth of the theosophical movement, and of our Society in particular, are given. The story takes us to Europe as well as through Eastern lands, the intelligent reader being afl'orded the chance of watching the gradual outworking of the plan of the unseen Founders, whom their visible agents know to be at work through this channel in spreading throughout the world a knowledge of the principles which were taught by the Ancient Sages, and the general under standing and adoption of which would cure most of the evils which now afflict mankind. For men suffer because of ignorance of themselves and their environment, and the false ideals of happiness which they struggle for are begotten by their ignorance - by nothing else. The war of individual men, of classes, and of nations can never will never - cease until the ideal of the Perfect Man, the omnipotence of His perfected Will, and the irresistible force of the law of Karma are grasped by the public mind, and the present popular ignorance is dispelled. Book The Private Diary of Dr John Dee and the Catalog of His Library of Manuscripts

Download or read book The Private Diary of Dr John Dee and the Catalog of His Library of Manuscripts written by John Dee and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Private Diary of Dr. John Dee And the Catalog of His Library of Manuscripts by John Dee PREFACE. The present volume contains two curious documents concerning Dr. Dee, the eminent philosopher of Mortlake, now for the first time published from the original manuscripts. I. His Private Diary, written in a very small illegible hand on the margins of old Almanacs, discovered a few years ago by Mr. W. H. Black, in the library of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. II. A Catalogue of his Library of Manuscripts, made by himself before his house was plundered by the populace, and now preserved in the library of Trinity College, Cambridge. The publication of this Diary will tend perhaps to set Dee's character in its true light, more than any thing that has yet been printed. We have, indeed, his "Compendious Rehearsall," which is in some respects more comprehensive, but this was written for an especial purpose, for the perusal of royal commissioners, and he has of course carefully avoided every allusion which could be construed in an unfavourable light. In the other, however, he tells us his dreams, talks of mysterious noises in his chamber, evil spirits, and alludes to various secrets of occult philosophy in the spirit of a true believer. Mr. D'Israeli has given a correct and able view of his character in his "Amenities of Literature," which is remarkably confirmed in almost every point by the narrative now published. "The imagination of Dee," observes that elegant writer, "often predominated over his science; while both were mingling in his intellectual habits, each seemed to him to confirm the other. Prone to the mystical lore of what was termed the occult sciences, which in reality are no sciences at all, since whatever remains occult ceases to be science, Dee lost his better genius." I shall refer the reader to this popular work instead of attempting an original paper on the subject, which would necessarily be greatly inferior to that drawn by the masterly hand of the author of the "Curiosities of Literature." The Catalogue of Dee's Library of Manuscripts, although long since dispersed, is valuable for the notices which it preserves of several middle-age treatises not now extant. He is said to have expended on this collection the sum of three thousand pounds, a very large sum in those days for a person of limited income. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

  • Pages : 855 pages

Download or read book The Occult written by Colin Wilson and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2015-05-17 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of The Outsider explores occult ideas, practices and figures from Kabbalah to Aleister Crowley in this “fascinating history of magic" (The Washington Post). Colin Wilson is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on occultism. His classic historical study on the subject is an essential guide to the mind-expanding experiences and discoveries made by occultists through the centuries—from Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa to Giacomo Casanova, Helena Blavatsky, Grigori Rasputin, and many others. More than a chronicle of people and events, however, Wilson has produced a synthesis of the available material, presenting the occult in the light of reason—and reason in the light of the mystical and paranormal. The result is a wide-ranging survey of the subject that provides a comprehensive history of magic, an insightful exploration of our latent powers, and a revelatory journey of enlightenment. "This most interesting, informative and thought-provoking book on the subject I have read." —Arthur Calder-Marshall, The Sunday Telegraph

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the life and work of John Dee, Renaissance mathematician and "conjurer to Queen Elizabeth," György E. Szo‹nyi presents an analysis of Renaissance occultism and its place in the chronology of European cultural history. Culling examples of "magical thinking" from classical, medieval, and Renaissance philosophers, Szo‹nyi revisits the body of Dee's own scientific and spiritual writings as reflective sources of traditional mysticism. Exploring the intellectual foundations of magic, Szo‹nyi focuses on the ideology of exaltatio, the glorification or deification of man. He argues that it was the desire for exaltatio that framed and tied together the otherwise varied thoughts and activities of John Dee as well.
