Book Occasional Papers and Addresses of an American Lawyer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Occasional Papers and Addresses of an American Lawyer Classic Reprint written by Henry W. Taft and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Papers and Addresses of an American Lawyer An interruption of professional activities is generally detrimental. There are so many competent lawyers that there is little difficulty in replacing those who forsake for politics their practice at the bar; and a lawyer who yields to the allurements of public life by accepting office generally finds that the political prestige he gains is of little practical use and that on returning to the law he must make new professional connections. In England the case is quite different and leaders of the bar may continue to practice their profession while they engage in parliamentary activities. To participate in partisan politics in a great city like New York, and, at the same time, build up and keep together a law practice, is most difficult. It is surprising how few men of real talent have performed the double role of lawyer and politician. This always becomes manifest when the state or federal appointing power seeks to fill vacancies on the bench. Lawyers of eminent qualifications for such positions are numerous, but to find those who are politically anything more than ciphers is most difficult. And yet it ought to be possible to maintain a first-rate position at the bar and at the same time acquire an influence in politics of sufficient importance to enable a lawyer to contribute something to the elevation of the tone of our public life. By training, environment and aptitude, lawyers are usually well equipped to engage in political activities, and if circumstances do not permit them to hold office, at least they may and ought to devote a substantial part of their time to the discharge of the duties and responsibilities of citizenship. Conspicuous examples show that this can be done without detriment to professional success. The career of Mr. Elihu Root is a striking illustration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Law and Arbitration: The Annual Address Delivered Before the American Bar Association, at Saratoga Springs, Thursday, August 20, 1896 My first words must be in acknowledgment of the honor done me, by inviting me to address you on this interesting occasion. You are a Congress of Lawyers of the United States met together to take counsel, in no narrow spirit, on questions affecting the interests of your Profession; to con sider necessary amendments in the Law which experience and time develop; and to examine the current of judicial decision and of legislation, State and Federal, and whither that current tends. I, on the other hand, come from the judicial Bench of a distant land, and yet I do not feel that I am a stranger amongst you, nor do you, I think, regard me as a stranger. Though we represent political communities which differ widely in many respects, in the structure of their constitutions and otherwise, we yet have many things in common. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lawyer's Recollections: In and Out of Court Thackeray says: "Some poet has observed, that if any man would write down what has really happened to him in this mortal life he would be sure to make a good book, though he never had met with a single adventure from his birth to his burial." I have occupied my leisure hours by recalling to mind, and recording, some matters in my experience which may not be without interest. Book Collected Legal Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Collected Legal Papers Classic Reprint written by Oliver Wendell Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Legal Papers This collection has been made by the kindness of a friend, Mr. Harold J. Laski, and I owe him thanks for gathering these little fragments of my fleece that I have left upon the hedges of life. They are printed as they appeared and I have been unable to do more than run my eye over them, but I am glad to see them put together in a book, as they offer some views of law and life that I have not expressed elsewhere so fully. The place of original publication is given at the head of each paper, and I thank the several publishers for their assent to the reprint. A later generation has carried on the work that I began nearly half a century ago, and it is a great pleasure to an old warrior Who cannot expect to bear arms much longer, that the brilliant young soldiers still give him a place in their councils of war.
