It is a truism to say that it comprehends every influence that goes to the formation of a mind. No man can give an account of it. A genuine autobiography is an attempt to do so. But in this even a Goethe or a Ruskin will fail. These men, like all others, owed as much to those subtle influences which pass unnoticed as to the more self-conscious experiences which it is easy to record and estimate. We who have to do with education professionally are apt to forget this, and to exaggerate the influence of the school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Addresses You will naturally expect, however, and the occasion itself would seem to demand, that I should take up some topic which has a direct and immediate bearing on the Objects which this institution and those of a kindred nature are seeking to accomplish. Moreover, the air is rife just now with discussions of questions pertaining to education. The most eminent thinkers both in this country and in Europe, are giving profound attention to this subject, which is perhaps as vitally related as any other to the civilization and progress of humanity. On either side of the water theories are advanced which touch not only the methods and Objects, but may I not say, the kind and quality of intellectual culture. If we trusted alone to certain prominent, but, I believe, superficial signs we might conclude that a revolution impends in relation to nearly every kind of teaching both primary and academic. It can scarcely be, however, that the world is ready for such sweeping changes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Papers Bearing Chiefly on Education In assuming the duties to which you have called me, I do so with diffidence coupled with hopefulness. I am abashed when I think that I am to be the successor of the Smiths, and of Alexander, Hoge, Cushing, Carroll, Maxwell, Sparrow, Green and Atkinson; but I am comforted by the thought that their virtues arc imitable, and that their strength was in God. I am cheered, too, by the consideration that I am the unanimous choice of your honorable body for this high position; that your selection was not based on friendly solicitation or on evidence furnished by others, but upon your own intimate knowledge of my character, attainments and mode of life, and that I have the assurance of your cordial cooperation in any efforts I may make to enlarge and extend the usefulness of the College whose interests are entrusted to your care. Permit me to say that there is no body of gentlemen with whom I would prefer to be associated. It has been my fortune to be acquainted with many of the good and great, but I have met none whose sentiments and aims seem to me to he more exalted or which more entirely secure my sympathy and approval; and I confidently anticipate both profit and pleasure from the relations we are to sustain to one another in the future. Book Educational Aims and Methods

Download or read book Educational Aims and Methods written by Joshua Fitch and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Aims and Methods: Lectures and Addresses The lectures and addresses collected in this volume have been given at various times within the last few years before different academic audiences in England or America, including the University of Cambridge, the College Association of Pennsylvania, the American Institute of Instruction, the Oxford Conference on University Extension, the College of Preceptors, the Teachers' Guild, and other bodies interested in educational questions. In my former volume, 'Lectures on Teaching, ' an attempt was made to discuss in succession the principles which should be borne in mind in connexion with each of the subjects of ordinary school instruction, and with the methods of teaching and discipline generally. The present volume is more miscellaneous and less systematic in its character. But it deals with some aspects of educational work to which my own attention, during a long official life, has been specially directed, and which, though not usually dealt with in formal treatises on pedagogy, deserve and often demand the consideration of those who as teachers, school trustees, or legislators possess influence in determining the goal to be attained in public education, and the processes by which that goal can best be reached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newer Ideals in Education: The Complete Use of the School Plant; An Address Delivered Before the Public Education Association in the New Century Drawing Room January 30, 1912 They decided then that the common schools should not only teach reading, writing and arithmetic, but that they should also include the principles of good citizenship by organizing courses in history and civics, and placing them in the school as class room subjects. While the results of this may be a little better, we are not yet satisfied, so that we have had one thing after another placed upon the public school curriculum. We public school men were startled a few years ago when business men and parents of children who attend the public schools blamed us, first, because the child did not have the power of concentrating his thoughts in one direction until he got somewhere, and, second, because he did not wish to do things with his hands when he came out of school. Public school people were surprised to learn that they were held responsible. They were not able to make a success with certain backward children, they explained, because the child did not want to learn, and did not have the power of concentration, the very thing that the people outside blamed the schools for. To insist that the school should turn out boys and girls of well-rounded characters, with the strength of manhood and womanhood was an unheard of thing. Book The War and Education Addresses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War and Education Addresses Classic Reprint written by F. West and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Education Addresses These addresses are collected in the hope they may help to keep the educational lessons of the war in vivid remembrance. It seems incredible that men should ever forget them. Yet many will do so as soon as the storm drifts away. Our American schooling has been weaker on the side of memory than in some other directions, so that it has become only too easy to forget. If through failure to perceive and remember, we fail to embody the teaching of the war in our education, the loss to our nation will be enormous, because we shall lose the one new impulse which can both save and strengthen our entire schooling from beginning to end. That new impulse is the pow erful revival of the belief in discipline and duty, as opposed to all sordid or sentimental theories. If it is forgotten or ignored, our schools and col leges will sink lower. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
