Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of Aardkundige Mededelingen deals with industrial minerals, their resources, characteristics and applications. It is the result of an academic session on industrial minerals in honour of Em. Prof. Dr. R. Ottenburgs. The contributions are organized according to five topics. In a first part, 'The Industrial Mineral World', some considerations on our natural resources, their use and political impact are presented. In a second part of the study, 'Aggregates and Natural Building Stone', a number of case-studies on the use of industrial minerals as aggregate and ornamental or building stone are discussed. In a third part of the volume, 'Mortar, Cement and Concrete', the study of ancient mortars as well as exploratory research into new materials is illustrated. In a fourth session, 'Clays and Soils', environmental aspects of soils and the economical use of clay deposits are highlighted. In a fifth and final part of the book, 'Steel', the link between ores and industrial minerals is made. It is clear that the study of industrial minerals has many faces and covers many disciplines. The impact of industrial minerals on the world's economy, but also on the environment, cannot be emphasized enough. This book gives an overview of the wide and rich diversity of research currently performed in the realm of the industrial minerals.

  • Pages : 437 pages

Download or read book 6000 BC written by Peter F. Biehl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present a comprehensive, up to date overview of archaeological and environmental data from the eastern Mediterranean world around 6000 BC. It brings together the research of an international team of scholars who have excavated at key Neolithic and Chalcolithic sites in Syria, Anatolia, Greece, and the Balkans. Collectively, their essays conceptualize and enable a deeper understanding of times of transition and changes in the archaeological record. Overcoming the terminological and chronological differences between the Near East and Europe, the volume expands from studies of individual societies into regional views and diachronic analyses. It enables researchers to compare archaeological data and analysis from across the region, and offers a new understanding of the importance of this archaeological story to broader, high-impact questions pertinent to climate and culture change.

Book excerpt: The meeting assembled an interdisciplinary group of nearly 50 archaeologists and art historians, geologists and geochemists from the U.S.A. and 14 European and Near Eastern countries to discuss the provenance, quarrying, transport and use of stone from prehistoric to early Christian times, both in Europe and in the Near East. Book Stone Tools in Transition From Hunter Gatherers to Farming Societies in the Near East

Download or read book Stone Tools in Transition From Hunter Gatherers to Farming Societies in the Near East written by Borrell, Ferran and published by Servei de Publicacions de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This book was released on 2013 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume compiles the papers presented at the seventh edition of the Conference on PPN Chipped and Ground Stone Industries of the Fertile Crescent, held in Barcelona from 14 to 17 February 2012. This series of conferences/workshops started nineteen years ago - the first meeting was organised in Berlin in 1993 - and is devoted to the study of the lithic record in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East and neighbouring regions. The seventh of these conferences was organised by the Institució Milà i Fontanals (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) and the Prehistory Department (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). This volume includes a total number of 36 articles, covering a wide range of topics and disciplines related to lithic studies in the Levant over a long chronological time span (from the final stages of the Epipalaeolithic/Natufian to the Halaf period). The publication of the conference proceedings is thus an interesting synthesis of the current state of lithic studies on the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East, and consolidates this specific series of conferences as a key tool to maintain and stimulate the vitality of high quality research into the Near Eastern lithic record.

Book Storage in Ancient Complex Societies

Download or read book Storage in Ancient Complex Societies written by Linda R. Manzanilla and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to accumulate and store large amounts of goods is a key feature of complex societies in ancient times. Storage strategies reflect the broader economic and political organization of a society and changes in the development of control mechanisms in both administrative and non-administrative—often kinship based—sectors. This is the first volume to examine storage practices in ancient complex societies from a comparative perspective. This volume includes 14 original papers by leading archaeologists from four continents which compare storage systems in three key regions with lengthy traditions of complexity: the ancient Near East, Mesoamerica, and Andes. Storage in Ancient Complex Societies demonstrates the importance of understanding storage for the study of cultural evolution.

The book includes chapters on the institutions of: property rights; the markets and means of exchange; the organization and finance of trade; and enforcement institutions from the judicial, social and political systems.
