Book excerpt: Second-order nonlinear models have been increasingly used in recent years model nonlinear processes in offshore engineering. We develop convenient analytic formulae to predict the nonlinearities in waves and to predict the crest height distribution in a specified wave condition. We apply such models to study the properties of random ocean waves. These include measured waves both in wave tanks and in field. Statistics comparison between model and measurements include: moment comparisons, comparison of distributions of wave elevations, crest heights, wave heights, and conditional distributions of local wave parameters, for example, crest height given wave heights, wave periods given crest heights, among others. We find the second-order model predictions to agree quite closely with the field measurements, while the wave tank statistics seem to be underpredicted by the second-order model. Finally, we solve the inverse problem, in which we identify the underlying first-order wave components, which when run through the second-order wave predictor matches the measured wave histories time point by time point.

Book excerpt: This report presents results of a study conducted to determine the variability of obsrvations made simultaneously by several different observers, to compare those observations with instrument measurements when available, and to look at the temporal variation of observed littoral conditions over a 25-hour period. Littoral Environment Observations (LEO) taken by individual observers were compared with the means of the observations obtained by all observers and with instrument-recorded data when available for a particular variable. Statistical analyses were performed for the different LEO variables to determine the following: (a) confidence intervals; (b) Correlation coefficients; (c) Standard deviations; (d) Consistency between observer and gage; (e) Effect of tides on estimation of parameters (i.e., did the estimates depend on the distance between observer and waves?); (f) The statistical wave height to which LEO wave heights should be compared. The field experiment was conducted at Duck, North Carolina, at the Field Research Facility (FRF) of the Coastal Engineering Research Center on 15-16 August 1978. Six observers simultaneously recorded hourly LEO observations. Concurrent wave measurements were made from the FRF pier with gages and radar.

Book excerpt: Waves critically affect man in coastal regions, including the open coasts and adjacent continental shelves. Preventing beach erosion, designing and building structures, designing and operating ships, providing marine forecasts, and coastal planning are but a few examples of projects for which extensive information about wave conditions is critical. Scientific studies, especially those in volving coastal processes and the development of better wave prediction models, also require wave condition information. How ever, wave conditions along and off the coasts of the United States have not been adequately determined. The main categories of available wave data are visual estimates of wave conditions made from ships at sea, scientific measurements of waves made for short time periods at specific locations, and a small number of long-term measurements made from piers or offshore platforms. With these considerations in mind, the National Ocean Survey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration sponsored the Ocean Wave Climate Symposium at Herndon, Virginia, July 12-14, 1977. This volume contains papers presented at this symposium. A goal of the symposium was to establish the foundations for a com prehensive and far-sighted wave measurement and analysis program to fully describe the coastal wave climate of the United States. Emphasis was placed on ocean engineering and scientific uses of wave data, existing wave monitoring programs, and modern measure ment techniques which may provide currently needed data.
