Book excerpt: A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine. Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is -- complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives. At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor. Complications is a 2002 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

  • Author : Katherine C. Kellogg
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Challenging Operations written by Katherine C. Kellogg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-07-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, in the face of errors and accidents caused by medical and surgical trainees, the American Council of Graduate Medical Education mandated a reduction in resident work hours to eighty per week. Over the course of two and a half years spent observing residents and staff surgeons trying to implement this new regulation, Katherine C. Kellogg discovered that resistance to it was both strong and successful—in fact, two of the three hospitals she studied failed to make the change. Challenging Operations takes up the apparent paradox of medical professionals resisting reforms designed to help them and their patients. Through vivid anecdotes, interviews, and incisive observation and analysis, Kellogg shows the complex ways that institutional reforms spark resistance when they challenge long-standing beliefs, roles, and systems of authority. At a time when numerous policies have been enacted to address the nation’s soaring medical costs, uneven access to care, and shortage of primary-care physicians, Challenging Operations sheds new light on the difficulty of implementing reforms and offers concrete recommendations for effectively meeting that challenge.

Book excerpt: Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review has proven to be the premiere resource to help prepare medical students for the surgical shelf exam and clinical wards. The second edition was conceived after listening to the feedback we received from students. We have added several new chapters and updated the others. This book continues to provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of surgical diseases in one easy-to-use reference that combines multiple teaching formats. The book begins using a case based approach. The cases presented cover the diseases most commonly encountered on a surgical rotation. The cases are followed by a series of short questions and answers, designed to provide further understanding of the important aspects of the history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up and management, and questions that may arise on surgical rounds and on the shelf exam. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner to help reinforce important surgical exam concepts. The second edition of Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review will be of great utility for medical students when they rotate on surgery, as well as interns, physician assistant students, nursing students, and nurse practitioner students.

Book The Woman in the Surgeon s Body

Download or read book The Woman in the Surgeon s Body written by Joan Cassell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgery is the most martial and masculine of medical specialties. The combat with death is carried out in the operating room, where the intrepid surgeon challenges the forces of destruction and disease. What, then, if the surgeon is a woman? Anthropologist Joan Cassell enters this closely guarded arena to explore the work and lives of women practicing their craft in what is largely a man's world. Cassell observed thirty-three surgeons in five North American cities over the course of three years. We follow these women through their grueling days: racing through corridors to make rounds, perform operations, hold office hours, and teach residents. We hear them, in their own words, discuss their training and their relations with patients, nurses, colleagues, husbands, and children. Do these women differ from their male colleagues? And if so, do such differences affect patient care? The answers Cassell uncovers are as complex and fascinating as the issues she considers. A unique portrait of the day-to-day reality of these remarkable women, The Woman in the Surgeon's Body is an insightful account of how being female influences the way the surgeon is perceived by colleagues, nurses, patients, and superiors--and by herself.

Book Essential surgical technique

Download or read book Essential surgical technique written by John Cumming and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the needs of the newly defined basic surgical trainee. Most BSTs now take part in prolonged rotations, with rela tively brief exposure to a wide range of different specialties. This book is designed to go with the trainee through the rotation, to provide a practical guide to the procedures that s/he may be expected to perform in each specialty. The Editors have deliberately avoided including major procedures at which the BST will be an interested observer. The emphasis throughout is on a clear practical guide to the minor and intermedi ate procedures which the trainee will perform. Undoubtedly, the first attempts at most of these procedures will be well supervised, but we hope that the descriptions in this book will help the trainee to master each procedure rapidly and with confidence. In addition we have included chapters on general aspects such as medical management, local anaesthetic techniques and basic surgi cal skills such as knot tying and instrument handling. We have adopted a direct, didactic style, because basic surgical trainees need clear direction. There are of course many other ways of doing most of the procedures described in these pages, and such variations will doubtless stimulate helpful discussions on practical points. Discussion and justification have been kept to a minimum, because we have focused on the essential practical steps of the procedures described.
