This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the Statutes of the University of Cambridge The following "Observations" originated in a request to print a Commemoration Sermon preached in the Chapel of Trinity College, which noticed, though in a very cursory manner, some of the topics which they embrace. In preparing the Sermon for the press, I found it impossible to do justice to so important a subject, without entering into a minuteness of detail and an extent of investigation which was totally incompatible with the form of publication which I had at first proposed. Book Statutes for the University of Cambridge and for the Colleges Within It

Download or read book Statutes for the University of Cambridge and for the Colleges Within It written by University Of Cambridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statutes for the University of Cambridge and for the Colleges Within It: Made and Published and Approved, 1878-1882, Under the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Act, 1877 In the arrangement of the several documents, there was not much room for choice. The University Statutes stand first, and bear their own numbers. The Colleges are placed in the order in which they follow one another in the various schedules and lists occurring in the University Statutes. This order, which has long been in common use in the University, is in fact the chronological order either of foundation or of re foundation; but, where a College has been re-founded, it must be observed that, if it retains its old name, even in part (as Gonville and Caius), it retains its old precedence; whereas, if it adopts a new name (as Trinity, Magdalene, Christ's), it loses its old precedence, and it is ranged, by common consent, according to its new dedication. To bring out this point clearly, it has been thought worth while to place a single line after the name of each College in the Tables of Contents. Book A Few Brief Remarks on the Recent Legislation for the Colleges and the University of Cambridge Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Few Brief Remarks on the Recent Legislation for the Colleges and the University of Cambridge In order clearly to understand the probable effects of the changes proposed by the new Statutes, in the Colleges and in the University of Cambridge, it appears desirable briefly to take a glance at the, past. In the year 1828 there were few men in the University who were deeply convinced of the necessity of amended codes of Statutes both for the Colleges and for the University. Many Statutes had fallen into disuse, some were impossible to be obeyed, and others were no longer adapted to the wants of the present age. It may be remarked that the general feeling of the ruling bodies was strongly Opposed to any changes what-6 ever in the existing state of the Colleges and the University. Book The Statutes and Laws of the University at Cambridge

Download or read book The Statutes and Laws of the University at Cambridge written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Statutes and Laws of the University at Cambridge: As Revised and Adopted by the Corporation on the 10th of June, And, Concurred in by the Overseers on the 17th of September, 1848 The last general revision of the Laws of the University took place in 1825, after a very protracted and laborious examination. On this occasion many important changes were made in the laws, of which an edition, as revised, was published in that year. Another edition, with some slight changes, was published in 1826, and still another in 1828. Since then there has been no publication of all the laws of the University, and they may be considered, at this time, as out of print. On the 17th May, 1832, President Quincy informed the Corporation that "a new edition of the Statutes and laws would be requisite, and suggested the expediency of a new arrangement of the laws, and some modifications of them: "Whereupon, it was voted, that "The President be a committee for the above purpose." On the 19th of July, President Quincy reported a selection from the general laws, under the title of "Statutes and Laws of Harvard University relative to Undergraduates"; which was read and adopted by the Corporation on the same day. Such portions of the previously existing laws as were deemed to relate to the same matters were at the same time repealed. On the same day (19th of July, 1832) the newly adopted code of laws was laid before the Over-seers and referred to a committee of that body, with instructions to report at the next meeting. At that meeting (23d of August, 1832), no report having been made by the Committee, they were discharged from the farther consideration of the subject; and the Revised Statutes and Laws as adopted by the Corporation were concurred in, with one slight amendment, by the Overseers. To this selection of laws and Statutes relating to undergraduates, thus adopted by the Corporation and Overseers, were subsequently added the "Orders and Regulations of the Faculty of Harvard College," forming together the pamphlet edition of the laws, placed in the hands of students when admitted to the College. This pamphlet has been more than once reprinted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Harvard: Showing That "the University at Cambridge" Was Not the Same Name Established for This Seminary by the Constitution of Massachusetts but That the Name Authorized by That Instrument Was "Harvard University" Notwithstanding the tendency of the tenor of this Note to mislead the public mind as to the material facts upon which the right of the seminary to take the name of Harvard University depended, it did not seem to be from its nature important enough, nor yet, in view of the circumstances under which it was issued, to have a sufficient degree of publicity, to justify any public comment upon its statements and objects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern mathematical logic would not exist without the analytical tools first developed by George Boole in The Mathematical Analysis of Logic and The Laws of Thought. The influence of the Boolean school on the development of logic, always recognised but long underestimated, has recently become a major research topic. This collection is the first anthology of works on Boole. It contains two works published in 1865, the year of Boole's death, but never reprinted, as well as several classic studies of recent decades and ten original contributions appearing here for the first time. From the programme of the English Algebraic School to Boole's use of operator methods, from the problem of interpretability to that of psychologism, a full range of issues is covered. The Boole Anthology is indispensable to Boole studies and will remain so for years to come.
