Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of English poet GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343 c. 1400) to the development of literature in the English language. His writings which were popular during his own lifetime with the nobility as well as with the increasingly literate merchant class marked the first celebration of the English vernacular as a tongue worthy of literary endeavor, most notably in his unfinished narrative poem The Canterbury Tales, the format and structure of which continues to be imitated by writers today. But the impact of Chaucer s work was felt even into the 16th and 17th centuries, when the first major collections of his writings set a high standard for how authors should be presented to the reading public. This widely esteemed seven-volume set first published in the 1890s by British academic WALTER WILLIAM SKEAT (1835 1912), Erlington and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University is based solely on Chaucer s original manuscripts and the earliest available published works (with any significant variations or deviations between versions highlighted in the extensive notes), and comes complete with Skeat s informative commentary on many passages. Volume III features: The Hous of Fame, one of Chaucer s earliest works, a poem some scholars consider a parody of Dante s Divine Comedy The Legend of Good Women, a dream-vision poem that represents an early major example of iambic pentameter in the English language A Treatise on the Astrolabe, the oldest work in English about a scientific instrument

Book excerpt: The fourteenth century is probably best remembered for the conflicts that raged between England and France, known collectively as the Hundred Years War. Begun by Edward III of England who laid claim to the throne of France, it had eventually run its weary course by the reign of his weak and ineffectual grandson Henry VI. Yet in 1370 the Hundred Years War was only a half of the way through, with England in imminent danger of losing most of her territorial possessions in France. At this critical moment in time, Geoffrey Chaucer, court envoy, ambitious poet, and protege of the king's powerful son John of Gaunt, is sent on a secret mission to the territory of the Comte de Guyac to persuade the French nobleman to stay loyal to the English cause. stronghold on the Dordogne in south-west France. The welcome is warm - Chaucer was once in love with Isabelle, the Comte's sister - but within a few days everything has changed. At the end of a hunting expedition, Guyac's body is discovered with a crossbow bolt through the throat. Suspicion points at the new English arrivals. So Chaucer must discover the real culprit if he is to save his own neck. The investigation will turn the poet and diplomat into a fugitive and the truth will not emerge until Chaucer joins Gaunt's brother Edward - known to history as the Black Prince - at the siege of Limoges, one of the crucial events in this endless war.

Book Chaucer s House of Fame

Download or read book Chaucer s House of Fame written by Sheila Delany and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On its original publication this classic title made sense of a difficult poem for the first time and brought that poem to the center of a concern with the nature of tradition, textuality, and language that is current today. The book forces late-medieval philosophy out of the closet and into a relation with literature, and it validates the use of contemporary methods and sensibility in literary criticism. In Sheila Delany's view, House of Fame portrays the ambiguity of old or new communication, with skeptical fideism as the means of transcending ambiguity.
