Book British Napoleonic Infantry Tactics 1792 1815

Download or read book British Napoleonic Infantry Tactics 1792 1815 written by Philip Haythornthwaite and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army that faced Napoleon in the Peninsula was small by continental standards, but it consistently out-fought larger French armies, never losing a major open-field action. Its cavalry and artillery were standard; but its infantry achieved unique results, as their tactics were brought to a peak of professional perfection by Wellington. Using contemporary instruction manuals, first-hand accounts and in-depth analysis of individual actions, this book examines exactly how Wellington was able to convert a rabble of volunteers and criminals into a well-oiled, highly disciplined and professional war-winning machine. With a detailed look at the effective use of terrain, line rather than column manoeuvres and fortification assaults, Philip Haythornthwaite reveals the crucial tactics of Wellington's army, illustrated with comprehensive maps, images and full-colour artwork.

This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1804 Serjeant William Weddeburne wrote his manual on the instruction of light infantry and rifle soldiers. He states in the preface that his intention was to instruct those volunteer forces who had assembled as auxiliaries to support the regular army in the event of invasion by the French. He used the system of training adopted by the 95th rifles on its formation. This book describes Weddeburne's service in the army, his subsequent life and a history of Weeley barracks where he wrote his book. A full text of this famously elusive manuscript is included, with an analysis of its place in the early development of light infantry training and tactics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The hitherto forgotten story of the development of the regimental band, mainly drummers and buglers. A rare piece of social history” (Books Monthly). The Instruments of Battle examines in detail the development and role of the British Army’s fighting drummers and buglers, from the time of the foundation of the army up to the present day. While their principal weapon of war was the drum and bugle—and the fife—these men and boys were not musicians as such, but fighting soldiers who took their place in the front line. The origins of the drum and bugle in the classical period and the later influence of Islamic armies are examined, leading to the arrival of the drum and fife in early Tudor England. The story proper picks up post-English Civil War. The drum’s period of supremacy through much of the eighteenth-century army is surveyed, and certain myths as to its use are dispelled. The bugle rapidly superseded the drum for field use in the nineteenth century—until developments on the battlefield consigned these instruments largely to barrack life and the parade ground. But there are surprising examples of the use of the bugle in the field through both world wars as the story is brought up to modern day and the instruments’ relegation to an almost exclusively ceremonial role. This is all set against a background of campaigns, battles, changing tactical methods, and the difficult processes of command and control on the battlefield. Interwoven is relevant comparison with other armies, particularly American and French. Stories of the drummers and buglers themselves provide social context to their place in the army.

Book excerpt: The 95th Rifles was one of history's great fighting units, and Mark Urban brings them and the Napoleonic War gloriously to life in this unique chronicle. Focusing especially on six soldiers in the first battalion, Urban tells the Rifles' story from May 25, 1809, when they shipped out to join Wellington's army in Spain, through the battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Drawing on diaries, letters, and other personal accounts, Urban has fashioned a vivid narrative that allows readers to feel the thrill and horror of famous battles, the hardship of the march across Europe, the bravery and camaraderie of a nineteenthcentury Band of Brothers whose innovative tactics created the modern notion of infantryman.

Download or read book Rifle and Riflemen written by Colonel Von Ehwald and published by . This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Treatise Upon the Duties of Light Troops by Colonel von Ehwald Twenty-Three Years Practice and Observations with Rifle Guns by Ezekiel Baker An iconic weapon and the soldiers who carried it This remarkable and unique Leonaur edition comprises two vital accounts; one concerning the development of the military rifle in the British Army and the other a treatise on the formation and operational activities of the light troops who employed it and who made both the rifle and themselves famous. The treatise, translated from the original German, is the work of Colonel von Ehwald and is essentially a guide book for the conduct of the petit guerre-the skirmishing combat the riflemen and other light infantry knew. Ehwald also covers the activities of light cavalry. This is very far from being simply a military instruction manual because the author was no mere theorist. He fought during the American War of Independence in British pay with the mercenary Hessians and commanded a 'Jaeger' corps of light troops in the Danish Army. So the concepts he explains in his book have been elaborated by the inclusion of descriptions real battlefield incidents based on personal experience. Those interested in the activities of light troops in action will be introduced to the activities of Simcoe's Queen's Rangers and others. In its original edition this book was published using an archaic form of printed English with widespread use of ligatured characters and a form of the letter 'f' used as the letter 's.' This edition has replaced those characters, often difficult to read for the modern reader, with contemporary forms, making Ehwald's text truly 'up to date.' Ehwald's book is accompanied here by Ezekiel Baker's remarkable book on the creation, construction, maintenanance, firing and capabilities of his legendary Baker Rifle, the weapon used to such deadly effect by the green coated riflemen-the 95th and 60th-of Wellington's Army of the Peninsular War and Waterloo. A must for all 'Rifles' enthusiasts. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
