Book excerpt: Excerpt from Additional Observations on Sexual Selection in Spiders of the Family Attid With Some Remarks on Mr. Wallace's Theory of Sexual Ornamentation On seeing the female, which he does when eight or ten inches away, he approaches her slowly; when within three or four inches lie-begins to sway from side to side by bending all the legs on'on'e side and extending the opposite ones, and then reversing the process, at the same time advancing. The palpi are stretched out sideways, thus exposing the blue clypeus. As he moves, the female eyes him attentively and seems to be interested in his display. When quite near her he raises the first legs and holds them perpendicularly upward, and then, as he comes closer, lowers them so as to touch her. This seems to frighten her, and she runs Off. The whole performance is repeated six or eight times before she finally yields, either to his boldness and persistence, as Mr. Wallace would haveit, or to the combination of these qualities with grace and beauty. Peckham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on Sexual Selection in Spiders of the Family Attidae, And, Protective Resemblance in Spiders Females. The most vigorous and energetic usually being able to rear most offspring, intensity of color, if dependent on or cor related with vigor, would tend to increase. But as differences of Color depend upon minute chemical or structural differences in the organism, increasing vigor acting unequally on different portions of the integument, and often producing at the same time abnormal developments of hair, horns, scales, feathers, etc., would almost necessarily lead also to variable distribution of color and thus to the production of new tints and markings. These acquired colors would be transmitted to both sexes, or to one only, according as they first appeared at an early age, or in adults of one sex; but in all cases where an increasing development of color became disadvantageous to the female, it would be checked by natural selection; and thus produce the numerous instances of protective coloring in the female only, 'which occur in these two groups, birds and butter flies.1. Book Current Perspectives on Sexual Selection

Download or read book Current Perspectives on Sexual Selection written by Thierry Hoquet and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This root-and-branch re-evaluation of Darwin’s concept of sexual selection tackles the subject from historical, epistemological and theoretical perspectives. Contributions from a wealth of disciplines have been marshaled for this volume, with key figures in behavioural ecology, philosophy, and the history of science adding to its wide-ranging relevance. Updating the reader on the debate currently live in behavioural ecology itself on the centrality of sexual selection, and with coverage of developments in the field of animal aesthetics, the book details the current state of play, while other chapters trace the history of sexual selection from Darwin to today and inquire into the neurobiological bases for partner choices and the comparisons between the hedonic brain in human and non-human animals. Welcome space is given to the social aspects of sexual selection, particularly where Darwin drew distinctions between eager males and coy females and rationalized this as evolutionary strategy. Also explored are the current definition of sexual selection (as opposed to natural selection) and its importance in today’s biological research, and the impending critique of the theory from the nascent field of animal aesthetics. As a comprehensive assessment of the current health, or otherwise, of Darwin’s theory, 140 years after the publication of his Descent of Man, the book offers a uniquely rounded view that asks whether ‘sexual selection’ is in itself a progressive or reactionary notion, even as it explores its theoretical relevance in the technical biological study of the twenty-first century.

Book Behaviour and Ecology of Spiders

Download or read book Behaviour and Ecology of Spiders written by Carmen Viera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last few decades, arachnology in the Neotropical region has experienced a great development filling the knowledge gap in one of the most diverse regions of the world. Nevertheless, large geographical areas remain poorly sampled, especially within the Amazon, and new genera and species have been continuously discovered, even in urban areas. In congruence with the recent improvements in research, several aspects of the ecology, behaviour and natural history of spiders, such as interactions with other predators and parasitoids, social interactions, dispersal patterns, habitat requirements, mating behaviors, among others, are being carefully investigated. These recent contributions incorporate substantial information on the preexisting knowledge on these subjects every year. Our main objective with this book is to present a summary on these new researches and on the currently knowledge on the main subjects involved in the general theme, emphasizing the contribution of the rich fauna of the Neotropical region to the research of behaviour and ecology of the spiders.
