Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on Obstetric Auscultation: With an Analysis of the Evidences of Pregnancy, and an Inquiry Into the Proofs of the Life and Death of the Fetus in Utero If we for a moment consider the responsible task for medical adviser is occasionally called upon to perform, when desired to pronounce on the existence or absence of pregnancy; that peace of mind, domestic happiness, character, property, nay even life itself, may be sacrificed by inaccuracy in his diagnosis; we shall find sample reason to question, whether there be, in the broad field of medical science, any subject which more calls for the attention of the practitioner, as well from its importance as from the difficulty so frequently attending its investigation. Every medical man, at all conversant with midwifery practice, knows how often he is required to give an opinion in cases of doubtful pregnancy, by his ordinary patients, who are naturally anxious to be acquainted with their real situation; and he also well knows what dissatisfaction and want to confidence his refusal to give a decided answer on this subject frequently engenders. Book Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Download or read book Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology written by Isabel Stabile and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a straightforward summary of the knowl edge required for examinations in specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Part Two of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Ob stetricians and Gynaecologists would be a good example. The volume is intended as a companion to the highly successful Basic Sciences for Ob stetrics and Gynaecology which covers the knowledge required for pre liminary examinations. Increasingly, examinations of all types are based on multiple choice ques tions (MCQ) or structured answer questions (SAQ). No apology is made for the fact that the present book addresses the sort of "fact" which lends itself to testing by this approach. Thus, there is little discussion of specula tive or contentious areas, no account of present or future research, and no references. Numerous excellent books are available which cover these top ics in a much fuller and more discursive manner, and the present volume does not seek to emulate them.
