Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on American Slavery, After a Year's Tour in the United States The following Letters were written at the request of the Editor of the Christian Reformer, to whom they were originally addressed. They are to be read as the observations of a traveller, not as a treatise on Slavery. They convey impressions recorded, for the most part, at the time, in letters to those whose anti-slavery zeal required no stimulant, and who needed information less as to the horrors of slavery, than as to the general aspect of the system, as it appears to its supporters and to passing observers. Book American Slavery as It Is

Download or read book American Slavery as It Is written by Theodore Dwight Weld and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery as It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses Reader, you are empannelled as a juror to try a plain case and bring in an honest verdict. The question at issue is not one of law, but of fact - "What is the actual condition of the slaves in the United States?" A plainer case never went to a jury. Look at it. Twenty-seven hundred thousand persons in this country, men, women, and children, are in slavery. Is slavery, as a condition for human beings, good, bad, or indifferent? We submit the question without argument. You have common sense, and conscience, and a human heart; - pronounce upon it. You have a wife, or a husband, a child, a father, a mother, a brother or a sister - make the case your own, make it theirs, and bring in your verdict. The case of Human Rights against Slavery has been adjudicated in the court of conscience times innumerable. The same verdict has always been rendered - "Guilty;" the same sentence has always been pronounced, "Let it be accursed;" and human nature, with her million echoes, has rung it round the world in every language under heaven, "Let it be accursed. Let it be accursed." His heart is false to human nature, who will not say "Amen." There is not a man on earth who does not believe that slavery is a curse. Human beings may be inconsistent, but human nature is true to herself. She has uttered her testimony against slavery with a shriek ever since the monster was begotten; and till it perishes amidst the execrations of the universe, she will traverse the world on its track, dealing her bolts upon its head, and dashing against it her condemning brand. We repeat it, every man knows that slavery is a curse. Whoever denies this, his lips libel his heart. Try him; clank the chains in his ears, and tell him they are for him. Give him an hour to prepare his wife and children for a life of slavery. Bid him make haste and get ready their necks for the yoke, and their wrists for the coffle chains, then look at his pale lips and trembling knees, and you have nature's testimony against slavery. Two millions seven hundred thousand persons in these States are in this condition. They were made slaves and are held such by force, and by being put in fear, and this for no crime! Reader, what have you to say of such treatment? Is it right, just, benevolent? Suppose I should seize you, rob you of your liberty, drive you into the field, and make you work without pay as long as you live, would that be justice and kindness, or monstrous injustice and cruelty? Now, every body knows that the slaveholders do these things to the slaves every day, and yet it is stoutly affirmed that they treat them well and kindly, and that their tender regard for their slaves restrains the masters from inflicting cruelties upon them. We shall go into no metaphysics to show the absurdity of this pretence. The man who robs you every day, is, forsooth, quite too tender-hearted ever to cuff or kick you! True, he can snatch your money, but he does it gently lest he should hurt you. He can empty your pockets without qualms, but if your stomach is empty, it cuts him to the quick. He can make you work a life time without pay, but loves you too well to let you go hungry. He fleeces you of your rights with a relish, but is shocked if you work bareheaded in summer, or in winter without warm stockings. He can make you go without your liberty, but never without a shirt. He can crush, in you, all hope of bettering your condition, by vowing that you shall die his slave, but though he can coolly torture your feelings, he is too compassionate to lacerate your back - he can break your heart, but he is very tender of your skin. He can strip you of all protection and thus expose you to all outrages, but if you are exposed to the weather, half clad and half sheltered, how yearn his tender bowels!

Book The Present Aspect of Slavery in America

Download or read book The Present Aspect of Slavery in America written by Theodore Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present Aspect of Slavery in America: The Immediate Duty of the North; A Speech Delivered in the Hall of the State House, Before the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Convention, on Friday Night, January 29, 1858 It was left for America to begin a new experiment in the History of Civilization - to bring diverse races into closest contact. The Catholic Spaniard began the experiment: he mixed his blood with the Red man, whose country he sub dued; he brought hither also the Black man. Thus the Afri can savage, the American barbarian, and the civilized Cau casian of Spain, became joint stockholders in this new copar ceny of races. The Protestant Briton continued what his Catholic predecessor had begun and while the Puritan was painfully voyaging to Plymouth, in the wilderness seeking an asylum where the Apocalyptic woman might bear her man child to grow up in freedom, other Saxons were bringing a ship-load of negroes to the wilderness, to become slaves for ever. Thus the African came to British and Spanish America. Out of the inhabitants of this continent, I take it about are of this unfortunate race. In the United States to-day, four of the five great races live side by side. There are some or Mongolian Chinese in California, I am told there are American Indians within our borders; perhaps Africans; and 26 Caucasians. The union of such diverse ethnological elements makes our experiment of democracy more complex, and perhaps more difficult than it would otherwise be. The Mongolians are few in numbers, and so transient in their stay that nothing more need now be said of them. It is plain where the Red man will go. In two hundred years, an Indian will be as rare in the United States as now in New England. Like the bear and the buffalo, he perishes with the forest, which to him and them was what cultivated fields, towns, and cities are to us. Our fathers tried to enslave the ferocious and unprogressive Indian he would not work for himself as a freeman, nor for others as a slave he would fight. He woulcl not be enslaved he could not help being killed. He perishes before us. The sinewy Caucasian laborer lays hold on the phlegmatic Indian warrior they struggle in deadly grasp-naked man to naked man, hand to shoulder, knee to knee, breast to breast; the white man bends the red man over, crushes him down, and chokes him dead. It is always so when the civilized meets the savage, or the barba rian-naked man to naked man: how much more fatal is the issue to the feeble when the white man shirted in iron has the Small Pox for his ally, and Rum for his tomahawk! In the long run of history, the race is always to the swift, and the battle to the strong. The Indian will perish utterly and soon. Book A Brief Notice of American Slavery and the Abolition Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Notice of American Slavery and the Abolition Movement Classic Reprint written by John Bishop Estlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Notice of American Slavery, and the Abolition Movement The hopeless condition of the Slave, both as regards his men tal improvement, and his eventual restoration to his rights as a man, may be judged of by a bare mention of a few of the laws of the Southern States. These laws somewhat vary in the different States; but the following will be found in some or other of them. Teaching Slaves to read is prohibited under severe penalties, fines and imprisonment, and especially if the free coloured peo ple presume to teach: in Louisiana, death is the legal penalty for the second offence. A father may be flogged for teaching his own child to read the Bible.* Religious assemblies of Slaves are illegal; they may be broken up, and the negroes flogged without trial for being present. The law affords no protection to the marriage of Slaves; masters may at any time enforce a separation between husband and wife. If a free coloured man enter a Southern port on ship board, he is liable to be taken to prison and kept there until the ship sails away; and if the cap tain should fail to pay the expences incurred by his detention, the coloured man is liable to be sold to perpetual Slavery. As sisting Slaves to escape is an offence visited with severe penalties, such as long imprisonment, heavy fines, branding with a hot iron, the pillory, and even death. In Mississippi Slaves are punished capitally for thirty different crimes, all of which in the case of whites are visited only with fine and imprisonment; eight of them, if committed by whites, are not punishable at all. All the Slave States allow the life of a fugitive Slave to be taken, if his escape cannot otherwise be prevented. A Slave, refusing to submit to the lash, may be legally shot. If a Slave be killed by cruel whipping, the master is liable to a fine, or to imprisonment for six months; but as Slave testi mony is not received in evidence, the commission of the offence cannot be proved against masters, if none but negroes were present at the time. However injured a Slave may be by per sonal violence, he cannot prosecute his master, or any one else, for damages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Slavery The following article was partially published in the "Edinburgh Review," during my absence from Europe. Considerable portions of the matter contained in the proofs, as I finally settled them, were omitted. It is now reprinted unmutilated, indeed verbatim, from the revise as it left my hands. On reperusal I have found nothing to soften or to retrench, though I could add and strengthen much. To bring down the story of American Slavery to the present time, I have reprinted the speech of Mr. Sumner in the Senate of the United States, on the 19th and 20th of May last, and a brief notice of the frightful scenes which followed it. The moral and intellectual character of Mr. Sumner has long been admired by Europe. To sympathy for his courage is now added sympathy for his calamity. I cannot believe that he has suffered in vain. Excerpt: ... guished in every benevolent public work and movement of the day. It is not intended at this time to follow him in these various labors, a recital of which would fill a large volume. It may be enough to say that he was truly a Christian philanthropist; most unostentatiously laboring, by personal influence, by correspondence, and by aid of the public press, for the promotion of any cause of humanity he was engaged in, or for the suppression of iniquity and wrong. He published several tracts and pamphlets on the evils of intemperance. The subject of war, with all its attendant horrors, was brought closely home to him by the trials of the American Revolution. The sufferings of the soldiers, and of the inhabitants on whom they were quartered, formed the object of many a visit to the officers' camp or to the public hospitals; and the iniquity of the whole system, especially its entire inconsistency with the Christian profession, impressed him so deeply that he printed and circulated, in large numbers, a treatise entitled "Thoughts on the Nature of War;" commending it by special letters to persons of distinction in Europe and America, for their perusal and reflection. In 1778, during the excitement of the American Revolution, he issued a small work entitled "Serious Reflections on the Times, addressed to the Well-Disposed of every Religious Denomination." The spirit of the whole book may be gathered from its closing paragraph: --"Let us not, beloved brethren, forget our profession as Christians, nor the blessing promised by Christ to the peace-makers; but let us all sincerely address our common Father for ability to pray, not for the destruction of our enemies, who are still our brethren, the purchase of our blessed Redeemer's blood, but for an...

THE SOUTH-WEST, ALABAMA AND MISSISSIPPI. Mnfo'Ie.--I left Savannah for the West, by the Macon road; the train started punctually to a second, at its advertised time; the speed was not great, but regular, and less time was lost unnecessarily, at way-stations, than usually on our Northern roads. I have travelled more than five hundred miles on the Georgia roads, and I am glad to say that all of them seem to be exceedingly well managed. The speed upon them is not generally more than from fifteen to twenty miles an hour; but it is made, as advertised, with considerable punctuality. The roads are admirably engineered and constructed, and their equipment will compare favourably with that of any other roads on the continent. There are now upwards of twelve hundred miles of railroad in the State, and more building. The Savannah and Macon line--the first built --was commenced in 1834. The increased commerce of the city of Savannah, which followed its completion, stimulated many other railroad enterprises, not only within the State, but elsewhere at the South, particularly in South Carolina. Many of these were rashly pushed forward by men of no experience, and but little commercial judgment; the roads were injudiciously laid out, and have been badly managed, and, of course, have occasioned disastrous losses. The S.ivannah and Macon road has, however, been very suecfissfiil. The receipts are now over g 1,000,000 annually; the road is well stocked, is out of debt, and its business is constantly increasing; the stock is above par, and the stockholders are receiving eight per cent. dividends, with a handsome surplus on hand. It has been always, in a great degree, under the management of Northern men -- was engineered, and is still worked...
