Book Observations on a Fracture Mechanics Approach to Fatigue Crack Initiation in Ti 6Al 4V

Download or read book Observations on a Fracture Mechanics Approach to Fatigue Crack Initiation in Ti 6Al 4V written by LA. Cooley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resistance to the initiation of fatigue cracks in Ti-6Al-4V has been determined from blunt-notched (keyhole) and sharp-notched (V) compact specimens of the WOL type. The primary alloy studied was in the mill-annealed condition with an ultimate tensile strength of 1034 MPa (150 ksi). In the case of the blunt-notched specimen, the notch root radius was ? = 1.59 mm (0.0625 in.); for the sharp-notched specimen, ? = 0.25 mm (0.010 in.). The influence of surface roughness, 0.4 ?m versus 1.8 ?m (16 ?in. versus 72 ?in.), on fatigue crack initiation resistance has also been examined. Notch root surfaces were specially prepared to remove all machining marks in the thickness direction. Specimens were cycled under constant load amplitude conditions in air with a stress ratio of R = 0.10. Cycles-to-initiation data normalize very well for the two specimen types when analyzed in terms of the ratio of stress intensity factor range to the square root of the notch root radius, ?K??. The fatigue crack initiation resistance also appears to be independent of surface roughness in the notch root region. Moreover, fatigue crack initiation resistance from these notched compact-type specimens is found to correlate well with fatigue strength determined from smooth, rotating beam specimens of this very same material. Finally, fatigue crack initiation resistance has been measured with the blunt notch compact specimen for a number of beta-annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloys with a broad range of oxygen contents (0.06 to 0.20 wt%). Though oxygen content can have a pronounced influence on fracture toughness, the present data do not indicate a significant influence of oxygen content on fatigue crack initiation resistance.

Book A Method for Conducting Automated Fatigue Crack Initiation Tests on Fracture Mechanics Specimens

Download or read book A Method for Conducting Automated Fatigue Crack Initiation Tests on Fracture Mechanics Specimens written by PS. Pao and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack initiation in notched members is controlled by local strains at the notch root. A number of approaches have been developed for calculating local notch-tip stresses and strains from nominal stress and notch geometry considerations. One such approach uses the parameter ?K/?1/2, where ?K is the fracture mechanics stress intensity range and ? is the notch root radius. The parameter ?K/?1/2 has been shown to correlate with local notch-tip strain and provide a means of normalizing cycles-to-initiation, Ni, data for various notch-tip geometries. Fatigue crack growth rate specimens described in ASTM Test Method for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399), ASTM Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates (E 647) and elsewhere can be used for fatigue crack initiation testing if they have blunt notches. Data in the form of parameter ?K/?1/2 versus Ni has the same units as the traditional S-N curves. The advantage of having data in the form parameter parameter ?K/?1/2 versus Ni is that information is available on ?K and ? . As in all fracture mechanics testing, data obtained on one specimen geometry can be applied to a wide variety of structural geometries. This approach can be used in conjunction with commercially available software for fatigue crack growth rate testing, servohydraulic testing equipment, and modified fracture mechanics specimens to automate fatigue crack initiation testing. The combination of all of these elements represents a new test method. Results are presented for aluminum alloy 7075, where the effects of corrosion pits were studied and for titanium alloy Ti-6A1-4V, where the effects of heat treatment on initiation were studied.

Book excerpt: Integral geometry deals with the problem of determining functions by their integrals over given families of sets. These integrals de?ne the corresponding integraltransformandoneofthemainquestionsinintegralgeometryaskswhen this transform is injective. On the other hand, when we work with complex measures or forms, operators appear whose kernels are non-trivial but which describe important classes of functions. Most of the questions arising here relate, in one way or another, to the convolution equations. Some of the well known publications in this ?eld include the works by J. Radon, F. John, J. Delsarte, L. Zalcman, C. A. Berenstein, M. L. Agranovsky and recent monographs by L. H ̈ ormander and S. Helgason. Until recently research in this area was carried out mostly using the technique of the Fourier transform and corresponding methods of complex analysis. In recent years the present author has worked out an essentially di?erent methodology based on the description of various function spaces in terms of - pansions in special functions, which has enabled him to establish best possible results in several well known problems.
