Book Aperture Synthesis of Interstellar Neutral Hydrogen in Absorption II Cygnus A the Crab Nebula and Other Sources

Download or read book Aperture Synthesis of Interstellar Neutral Hydrogen in Absorption II Cygnus A the Crab Nebula and Other Sources written by Eric W. Greisen and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Owens Valley Radio Observatory interferometer has been used to carry out a program of aperture synthesis in the interstellar neutral hydrogen line. The results of synthesis observations of Cygnus A, the Crab Nebula and 3C353 and single-spacing observations of W12 and 3C147 are presented. Considerable spatial structure in the absorbing medium is found with scale lengths about 1 pc (and perhaps even as small as 0.14 pc) being common. Some of the small-scale features are seen as condensations within much larger clouds. The hydrogen densities appear to be mostly on the order of 100/cc. Upper limits to the temperatures lower than 50K are found for some spectral components, but upper limits between 80 and 160K are more common. The implications of these results for the two-phase model of the interstellar medium are discussed. (Author Modified Abstract).

Download or read book Comets II written by Michel C. Festou and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2004-11-01 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of comets is a field that has seen tremendous advances in recent years, far surpassing the knowledge reflected in the original Comets volume published as part of the Space Science Series in 1982. This new volume, with more than seventy contributing authors, represents the first complete overview of comet science in more than a decade and contains the most extensive collection of knowledge yet assembled in the field. Comets II situates comet science in the global context of astrophysics for the first time by beginning with a series of chapters that describe the connection between stars and planets. It continues with a presentation of the formation and evolution of planetary systems, enabling the reader to clearly see the key role played in our own solar system by the icy planetesimals that were the seeds of the giant planets and transneptunian objects. The book presents the key results obtained during the 1990s, in particular those collected during the apparition of the exceptional comets C/Hyakutake and C/Hale-Bopp in 1996-1997. The latest results obtained from the in situ exploration of comets P/Borrelly and P/Wild 2 are also discussed in detail. Each topic of is designed to be accessible to students or young researchers looking for basic, yet detailed, complete and accurate, information on comet science. With its emphasis on the origin of theories and the future of research, Comets II will enable scientists to make connections across disciplinary boundaries and will set the stage for discovery and new understanding in the coming years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts. which appears in semi-annual volumes, is devoted to the re cording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 3 contains literature published in 1970 and received before August IS, 1970; some older lite rature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.

Book Physics of the Outer Heliosphere

Download or read book Physics of the Outer Heliosphere written by S. Grzedzielski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume in the new COSPAR Colloquia series which will provide a forum for an in-depth discussion on selective topics of importance to the international community. The International Heliospheric Study (IHS) was initially approved by COSPAR in 1982 when it was anticipated that the study would centre on the ESA/NASA Ulysses spacecraft. This mission was delayed until October 1990, but it was decided to commence the study in 1986 in order to exploit the existence of the Pioneer 10 and 11 and the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere. The primary purpose of Physics of the Outer Heliosphere is to study the three-dimensional structure of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field carried by it, the propagation of energetic solar particles throughout the heliosphere and the modulation of galactic cosmic rays by the heliosphere. This volume provides information for scientists interested in spectroscopic studies of the local interstellar medium, galactic and solar cosmic ray populations in the outer heliosphere and also plasma and magnetic field aspects of the distant solar wind.
