Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its relentless pursuit of further knowledge, science tends to compartmentalize. Over the years the pursuit of What might be called geophysical acoustics of the sea-surface has languished. This has occured even through there are well-developed and active research programs in underwater acoustics, ocean hydrodynamics, cloud and precipitation physics, and ice mechanics - to name a few - as well as a history of engineering expertise built on these scientific fields. It remained to create a convergence, a dialogue across disciplines, of mutual benefit. The central theme of the Lerici workshop, perhaps overly simplified, was 'What are the mechanisms causing ambient noise at the upper surface of the ocean?' What could hydrodynamicists contribute to a better understanding of breaking wave dynamics, bubble production, ocean wave dynamics, or near-surface turbulence for the benefit of the underwater acoustics community? What further insights could fluid dynamicists gain by including acoustic measurements in their repertoire of instrumentation? While every attendee will have his or her percep tions of details, it was universally agreed that a valuable step had been taken to bring together two mature disciplines and that significant co-operative studies would undoubtedly follow. The scope of the workshop was enlarged beyond its original intent to also include the question of ice-noise generation. The success of this decision can be seen in high quality of the presentations. the contribution of its disciples in the other workshop discussions and the heightened awareness and interest of we other novices.

Book Oceanic Electric Currents Geomagnetic Variations and the Deep Electrical Conductivity Structure of the Ocean continent Transition of Central California

Download or read book Oceanic Electric Currents Geomagnetic Variations and the Deep Electrical Conductivity Structure of the Ocean continent Transition of Central California written by Jean Henri Filloux and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variations of electromagnetic field components along a line across central California have been examined in the frequency range .125 to 4 cph by means of an array of stations extending from 320 km inland to 630 km offshore. The three components of the magnetic variations were recorded at six land positions. Simultaneously, records of the oceanic electric field in a direction approximately parallel to the coast were obtained at three stations located as far as 150 km offshore by using self-contained recorders installed on the sea floor. The cross-correlation of all field components leads to field relationships suggesting a large-scale, nearly two-dimensional structure of the electrical conductivity of the earth's crust and upper mantle in a region adjacent to the California coast. Estimates of the continental and oceanic conductivity distribution with depth were carried out by solving numerical models. The estimate of the offshore conductivity profile based on models of the coastal cross section are in excellent agreement with the independent magnetotelluric sounding. In the light of the present knowledge of the properties of rocks at high pressure and temperature, the high electrical conductivity of the oceanic basement favors a highly basaltic external mantle shell, extending to no less than 30 km below the Mohorovicic discontinuity. Book Geomagnetic Observations and Models

Download or read book Geomagnetic Observations and Models written by M. Mandea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of all the main areas linked to geomagnetic field observation, from instrumentation to methodology, on ground or near-Earth. Efforts are also focused on a 21st century e-Science approach to open access to all geomagnetic data, but also to the data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, and capacity building. Finally, modeling magnetic fields with different internal origins, with their variation in space and time, is an attempt to draw together into one place the traditional work in producing models as IGRF or describing the magnetic anomalies.

Book Measurement and Interpretation of Motional Electric Fields in the Sea

Download or read book Measurement and Interpretation of Motional Electric Fields in the Sea written by Thomas Bayes Sanford and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total motional electric current distribution is investigated for a quasi-steady, 3-dimensional ocean current. In order that electric currents associated with time variations in the induced magnetic field be negligible, a restriction is placed on the temporal and spacial variations of the flow. The quasi-static electric potential is calculated for a general flow and for a model of the Gulf Stream. The 3-dimensional solution for the electric potential is particularized for a 2-dimensional current which is broad compared with the ocean's depth. It is shown that for such a broad flow the electric current stream function is proportional to a transport function. The surface expression and total structure of the electric current are calculated for several simple flows and for a cross section of the Gulf Stream. A detailed comparison of several GEK traverses across the Gulf Stream taken in conjunction with hydrographic sections reveals the presence of inertial period oscillations in the surface layers.
