Book Observations of Collective Phenomena in Plasmas

Download or read book Observations of Collective Phenomena in Plasmas written by Keith I. Thomassen and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to find experimental evidence of an 'anomalous' resistance in plasmas. Anomalous resistance results when collective action by electrons causes randomization of the growing oscillations in the two-stream instability. This sequence of events leading to dissipation of energy was predicted several years ago by Buneman. It is believed that this objective was achieved (i.e., that anomalous resistance is evidenced by observations to be reported here), on a high density plasma subjected to r-f fields by a cavity resonant at a frequency well below the plasma frequency. With sufficient r-f power and density, the two-stream instability should be excited to turbulence level during each halfcycle, causing irreversible power loss. Calculations enumerating the necessary conditions for observing the phenomena were made, showing that the resistance can easily be seen above the intrinsic cavity loss using very moderate amounts of power. Book Collective Phenomena in Plasmas and Elsewhere

Download or read book Collective Phenomena in Plasmas and Elsewhere written by Kamel Ourabah and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universe is made up of systems consisting of a very large number of particles interacting in a very complex way. When studying these systems, a precise microscopic approach is unattainable. In practice, the best strategy is one that is able to “distinguish” between superfluous information and the information needed to make predictions about the evolution of the system. There are two main competing approaches: kinetic and hydrodynamic. Collective Phenomena in Plasmas and Elsewhere presents an overview of the theoretical bases of these kinetic and hydrodynamic approaches, but also discusses their limitations, the links between them and their extension to quantum mechanics and relativity. These methods were born in part out of the study of plasmas, but they also have more universal applications. A general framework for these approaches is outlined, followed by some applications in plasmas, gravitation, Bose–Einstein condensates and dark matter. Particular emphasis is placed on the analogies that can be made between all these different systems.

Download or read book Optical Collective Phenomena with Participation of Metastable Atoms in Decaying Plasma of Pulsed Discharge written by S. N. Bagayev and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering new methods of nonstationary plasma diagnostics, we investigate an appearance of a new type of laser spectrum generation, which is a direct consequence of underlying principles of light-matter interaction. The spectrum "condensation" and amplification observed originate from the collective coherent interaction between atoms of a dense resonant medium trough the electromagnetic field.

  • Author : Società italiana di fisica

Download or read book Plasmas in the Universe written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2000-10-25 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates new developments in the fields of space and solar physics, stellar physics, extragalactic physics and cosmology. It also elaborates upon the progress of laboratory plasma physics. One of the topics discussed is the existence of collective processes, both linear and non-linear, that can explain key elements of accretion physics, magnetic reconnection, the formation of ‘strange’ particle distributions, particle scattering phenomena, etc. Astrophysical plasma are dominated by turbulent or quasi-turbulent processes which interactively associate instabilities, radiation processes and plasma-wave scattering. The resulting scenario, which is outside thermodynamics and conventional statistical physics, is too difficult to describe theoretically, but today there are large-scale experiments and powerful computational tools allowing for the exploration of an almost similarly complex variety of phenomena. Several contributions to this book present indications of the influence of nonlinear phenomena in astrophysical applications. This work marks the fast growth of plasma astrophysics thanks to new observations in the high energy band of the spectrum on the one hand and the possibility of validating and bringing to light relevant new theories by increasingly sophisticated machines on the other.
