Book Observations of a New Catholic

Download or read book Observations of a New Catholic written by Donald Johnson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader: I believe this book is unique. No other book I’ve found is even remotely similar. It identifies and discusses issues and problems currently facing the Catholic Church in America. The Church in America is beset with difficulties. Catholic elementary schools are closing. There is a severe shortage of priests and religious sisters. Church attendance is dropping precipitously. There are lingering effects from the child sex abuse scandal among priests. Catholic couples in their child-bearing years face a moral dilemma in regard to birth control. There seems to be a growing dissonance between Church authority and the laity, in which primacy of conscience is replacing obedience to the Church. I address all of these matters and others. At the same time, I have learned there is much to be gained by being Catholic. Two recently published books analyzing biblical scripture have convinced me that Jesus Christ really is God, and that therefore I can attain salvation through following his precepts. For all its difficulties, the Church does a lot of good. Pope Francis provides outstanding moral leadership at a time this is desperately needed. The Church’s charitable activities at a parish and diocesan level are impressive. At a personal level, my conversion has helped me immeasurably by giving me peace of mind. During my conversion and first two years as a Catholic, I picked interesting subjects to study such as the Marian apparitions, the life of Thomas Merton, how the Church canonizes saints, the insights of C. S. Lewis about prayer, and Martin Luther’s condemnation of praying to Mary. I believe you also will find these interesting and hopefully helpful for you in some ways. Respectfully, Donald Johnson

Book To Light a Fire on the Earth

Download or read book To Light a Fire on the Earth written by Robert Barron and published by Image. This book was released on 2017 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly anticipated follow-up to Bishop Robert Barron's hugely successful Catholicism: A Journey to the Faith As secularism gains influence, and increasing numbers see religion as dull and backward, Robert Barron wants to illuminate how beautiful, intelligent, and relevant the Catholic faith is. In this compelling new book--drawn from conversations with and narrated by award-winning Vatican journalist John L. Allen, Jr.--Barron, founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, proclaims in vivid language the goodness and truth of the Catholic tradition. Through Barron's smart, practical, artistic, and theological observations as well as personal anecdotes--from engaging atheists on YouTube to discussing his days as a young diehard baseball fan from Chicago--To Light a Fire on the Earth covers prodigious ground. Touching on everything from Jesus to prayer, science, movies, atheism, the spiritual life, the fate of Church in modern times, beauty, art, and social media, Barron reveals why the Church matters today and how Catholics can intelligently engage a skeptical world.

Book The Emerging Catholic Church

Download or read book The Emerging Catholic Church written by Tom Roberts and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading journalist assesses the state of the Catholic church today and the shape of the future to come. In his long career as a religion writer and editor Tom Robert has been engaged on a particular search to understand the emerging Catholic communitya search bracketed on one end by Vatican II and ton he other by the yet unknown. In this work he presents the fruit of his observations: a picture of a church that is still grappling with the meaning of the Second Vatican Council; responding to dramatic demographic shifts affecting both the church and wider culture; absorbing the implications of the new cosmology with its impact on traditional belief systems; accounting for the emerging leadership of women in the church and the wider culture, and its impact on an evolving concept of God; and reeling over the sex abuse scandal, and what it has revealed about the growing inadequacy of the hierarchical culture. With all the signs of strain and stress, however, Roberts gives equal attention to signs of renewal, showing how faith, hope, and love which have guided the church in the past will continue to shape the community's search for itself in the future.

Book Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial

Download or read book Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial written by Guy Consolmagno, SJ and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witty and thought provoking, two Vatican astronomers shed provocative light on some of the strange places where religion and science meet. “Imagine if a Martian showed up, all big ears and big nose like a child’s drawing, and he asked to be baptized. How would you react?” —Pope Francis, May, 2014 Pope Francis posed that question—without insisting on an answer!—to provoke deeper reflection about inclusiveness and diversity in the Church. But it's not the first time that question has been asked. Brother Guy Consolmagno and Father Paul Mueller hear questions like that all the time. They’re scientists at the Vatican Observatory, the official astronomical research institute of the Catholic Church. In Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial? they explore a variety of questions at the crossroads of faith and reason: How do you reconcile the The Big Bang with Genesis? Was the Star of Bethlehem just a pious religious story or an actual description of astronomical events? What really went down between Galileo and the Catholic Church—and why do the effects of that confrontation still reverberate to this day? Will the Universe come to an end? And… could you really baptize an extraterrestrial? With disarming humor, Brother Guy and Father Paul explore these questions and more over the course of six days of dialogue. Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial will make you laugh, make you think, and make you reflect more deeply on science, faith, and the nature of the universe.

Download or read book Quest for the Living God written by Elizabeth A. Johnson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Since the middle of the twentieth century,' writes Elizabeth Johnson, 'there has been a renaissance of new insights into God in the Christian tradition. On different continents, under pressure from historical events and social conditions, people of faith have glimpsed the living God in fresh ways. It is not that a wholly different God is discovered from the One believed in by previous generations. Christian faith does not believe in a new God but, finding itself in new situations, seeks the presence of God there. Aspects long-forgotten are brought into new relationships with current events, and the depths of divine compassion are appreciated in ways not previously imagined.' This book sets out the fruit of these discoveries. The first chapter describes Johnson's point of departure and the rules of engagement, with each succeeding chapter distilling a discrete idea of God. Featured are transcendental, political, liberation, feminist, black, Hispanic, interreligious, and ecological theologies, ending with the particular Christian idea of the one God as Trinity.

Chapters: Galileo affair, Catholic Church and evolution, Catholic Church and science, Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Condemnations of 1210-1277, Humani generis, Life of Galileo, List of Jesuit scientists, Vatican Observatory, Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, Pontifical Academy of Archaeology, Providentissimus Deus. Excerpt: The Galileo affair was a sequence of events, beginning around 1610, during which Galileo Galilei came into conflict with the Aristotelian scientific view of the universe (supported by the Catholic Church), over his support of Copernican astronomy. In 1610, Galileo published his Sidereus Nuncius (Starry Messenger), describing the surprising observations that he had made with the new telescope. These and other discoveries exposed severe difficulties with the scientific understanding of the universe that had existed since the beginning of science, and raised new interest in studies such as the heliocentric theory of Copernicus (published in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in 1543). Many scientists attacked the theory because it disagreed with Aristotle's model of the universe, as well as several passages of Scripture. Galileo's part in the controversies over theology, astronomy, and philosophy culminated in his trial and sentencing by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 on a grave suspicion of heresy. Galileo began his telescopic observations in the later part of 1609, and by March of 1610 was able to publish a small book, The Starry Messenger (Sidereus Nuncius), relating some discoveries that had not been dreamed of in the philosophy of the time: mountains on the Moon, lesser moons in orbit around Jupiter, and the resolution of what had been thought cloudy masses in the sky (nebulae) into collections of stars too faint to see individually without a telescope. Other observations followed, including the...

Download or read book New Religious Consciousness written by Charles Y. Glock and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1960s, new religious movements—some exotic, some homegrown—have burgeoned all over the United States. A sense of self-awareness and spiritual sensitivity have found expression in the lives of large numbers of people, especially among youth. Why would this happen? What do these movements teach, and what effect do they have on the future? How does religious consciousness relate to other manifestations of social change, such as communal living, group therapy, and radical politics? Beginning in 1971, an extensive research project was undertaken by a team of sociologists, historians, and theologians seeking answers to these questions. Through a combination of interviews and participant observations, they studied new religious and quasi-religious groups in the San Francisco Bay Area, a spawning ground for upwards of one hundred such movements. The New Religious Consciousness opens with reports on three Eastern-based movements: the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization, Hare Krishna, and Divine Light (more popularly known by the name of its leader, Maharaj Ji). Three quasi-religious movements are then considered: the New Left, the Human Potential Movement (Esalen, EST, Scientology, etc.), and Synanon. Next, three movements having their roots in Western religious traditions are examined: the Christian World Liberation Front (an offshoot of the Jesus Movement), Catholic Charismatic Renewal, and the Church of Satan (whose members believe in witchcraft). Succeeding chapters are devoted to estimating the impact of these movements on established religions and the population at large and to the history of earlier periods of religious ferment in the United States. The book concludes with provocative essays by the editors in which they present separate and differing analyses of the sources, nature, and meaning of the new religious consciousness. A variety of perspectives are represented here: phenomenological, theological, experiential, sociological, and social psychological. The result is a book rich in insight about the nature of new religions. Taken together with a companion volume, Robert Wuthnow's The Consciousness Reformation, also published by University of California Press, The New Religious Consciousness provides the first comprehensive study of American countercultural belief systems. Book Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic

Download or read book Born Fundamentalist Born Again Catholic written by David Currie and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Currie was raised in a devout Christian family whose father was a fundamentalist preacher and both parents teachers at Moody Bible Institute. Currie's whole upbringing was immersed in the life of fundamentalist Protestantism - theology professors, seminary presidents and founders of evangelical mission agencies were frequent guests at his family dinner table. Currie received a degree from Trinity International University and studied in the Masters of Divinity program. This book was written as an explanation to his fundamentalist and evangelical friends and family about why he became a Roman Catholic. Currie presents a very lucid, systematic and intelligible account of the reasons for his conversion to the ancient Church that Christ founded. He gives a detailed discussion of the important theological and doctrinal beliefs Catholic and evangelicals hold in common, as well as the key doctrines that separate us, particularly the Eucharist, the Pope, and Mary.
