Book Observations and Measurements of Orbitally Excited L

Download or read book Observations and Measurements of Orbitally Excited L written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes investigations of the first set of orbitally excited (L = 1) states for both the Bd0 and Bs0 meson systems (B**d and B**s). The data sample corresponds to 1.35 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, collected in 2002-2006 by the D0 detector, during the Run IIa operation of the Tevatron p$\bar{p}$ colliding beam accelerator. The B**d states are fully reconstructed in decays to B(*)+ [pi]-, with B(*)+ → [gamma] J/[Psi]K+, J/[Psi] → [mu]+[mu]-, yielding 662 ± 91 events, and providing the first strong evidence for the resolution of two narrow resonances, B1 and B*2. The masses are extracted from a binned [Chi]2 fit to the invariant mass distribution, giving M(B1) = 5720.7 ± 2.4(stat.) ± 1.3(syst.) ± 0.5 (PDG) MeV/c2 and M(B*2) = 5746.9 ± 2.4(stat.) ± 1.0(syst.) ± 0.5(PDG) MeV/c2. The production rate of narrow B**d → B[pi] resonances relative to the B+ meson is determined to be [13.9 ± 1.9(stat.) ± 3.2(syst.)]%. The same B+ sample is also used to reconstruct the analogous states in the Bs0 system, in decays B**s → B(*)+ K-. A single resonance in the invariant mass distribution is found with a statistical significance of 5[sigma], interpreted as the B*s2 state. The mass is determined to be M(B*s2) = 5839.6 ± 1.1(stat.) ± 0.4(syst.) ± 0.5(PDG) MeV/c 2, and the production rate of B*s2 → BK resonances is measured to be a fraction (2.14 ± 0.43 ± 0.24)% of the corresponding rate for B+ mesons. Alternative fitting hypotheses give inconclusive evidence for the presence of the lighter Bs1 meson.

Book Measurement of the D s Leptonic Decay Constant F D s and Observation of New Resonances Decaying to D pi

Download or read book Measurement of the D s Leptonic Decay Constant F D s and Observation of New Resonances Decaying to D pi written by Jose Feliciano Benitez and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absolute branching fractions for the decays $D^-_s\rightarrow\ell^-\bar{\nu}_{\ell}$ ($\ell=e$, $\mu$, or $\tau$) are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 521 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center of mass energies near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ collider at SLAC. The number of $D_s^-$ mesons is determined by reconstructing the recoiling system $DKX\gamma$ in events of the type $e^+e^-{\rightarrow}DKXD^{*-}_s$, where $D^{*-}_s\rightarrow D^-_s\gamma$ and $X$ represents additional pions from fragmentation. The $D^-_s\rightarrow\ell^-\nu_{\ell}$ events are detected by full or partial reconstruction of the recoiling system $DKX\gamma\ell$. The following results are obtained: $B(D^-_s \to \mu^- \nu) = (6.02 \pm 0.38 \pm 0.34) \times 10^{-3}$, $B(D^-_s \to \tau^- \nu) = (5.00 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.49) \times 10^{-2}$, and $B(D^-_s \to e^- \nu)

Book Physics In Collision Xix Procs

Download or read book Physics In Collision Xix Procs written by Myron Campbell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-07-27 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The XIX Physics in Collision conference reviewed experimental results in electroweak, quantum chromodynamics, neutrino, bottom and rare kaon physics, and updated recent developments in the area of gamma ray bursts as well as the issue of the cosmological constant and dark matter. The conference opened with reports on electroweak physics. A decade of precision experiments in laboratories around the world failed to uncover any significant deviations from standard model predictions. Precise W boson and top quark mass measurements suggest a low mass Higgs boson in the standard model, possibly within the reach of the LEP II and the upgraded Tevatron colliders. These presentations were followed by a summary of the latest results on searches for Higgs and supersymmetry. There were three reports on neutrino physics: atmospheric, solar and reactor/accelerator based neutrino experiments and results. Impressive Super-K results strongly suggest νμ→νς oscillation, a scenario confirmed by less precise Soudan2 and MACRO data. The latest results on strange and heavy quark physics were summarized. High statistics from CLEO, LEP I and Tevatron have enabled experimenters to study many rare charm and bottom quark decays for the first time. Among many other interesting results presented, the first measurements of sin 2β by CDF and ε′/ε by KTeV provide a preview of expected developments in the near future.

Book Quarks And Colliders Proceedings Of The Tenth Lake Louise Winter Institute

Download or read book Quarks And Colliders Proceedings Of The Tenth Lake Louise Winter Institute written by Alan Astbury and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book originated in a series of lectures given at Liverpool in 2013 to a group that included postgraduate and undergraduate students and staff of the Physics Department. They followed from two very successful lectures given to the undergraduate Physical Society. It seemed that there was a very large interest among the students in investigating the foundations of physics in a way that was never done in physics courses, and was not available in books or other outlets. However, the idea was to create a framework in which students (and interested staff) could develop their own thinking relative to the ideas in the lectures. So it was important to create both conceptual and mathematical structures on the issues that are important at this level. The book has the right sort of technical content to allow for this development, but doesn't lose itself in excessive details. The ideal use for this book would be on postgraduate courses where students would be encouraged to think about the foundations in a way that is well beyond the superficial. However, a course on aspects of this material would also be valuable at the undergraduate level, where students could be stimulated into believing that creative thinking could solve the problems that emerge when we confront foundational problems.

Book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics VI

Download or read book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics VI written by Thomas Ferbel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Club St. Croix, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 70 participants, from 21 different countries. Despite logistical problems caused by hurricane Hugo, it was a very successful meeting. Hugo's destruction did little to dampen the dedication of the inspiring lecturers and the exceptional enthusiasm of the student body; nevertheless, the immense damage caused to the beautiful island was very saddening indeed. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. As in the case of the previous ASls, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first five ASls, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists.
