Download or read book Observation of Pi B Meson Charge flavor Correlations and Measurement of Time Dependent B Bbar Mixing in P Pbar Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a study of time dependent B°-{anti B}° mixing in p{anti p} collisions at 1.8 TeV using 110 pb−1 collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. B mesons are partially reconstructed using the semileptonic decays B°-->lD{sup (*)-}X and B-->l+{anti D}°X (and their charge conjugates). B meson-charged pion correlations are used in order to determine the flavor of the B meson at t=0. Such correlations are expected to arise from pions produced in the fragmentation chain and also from B{sup **} decays. We measure the efficiency and purity of this flavor tagging method for both charged and neutral B mesons.

Book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in B s 0 J psi phi Decays written by Sabato Leo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

Book A MEASUREMENT OF THE LIFETIME AND MIXING FREQUENCY OF NEUTRAL B MESONS WITH SEMILEPTONIC DECAYS IN THE BABAR DETECTOR

Download or read book A MEASUREMENT OF THE LIFETIME AND MIXING FREQUENCY OF NEUTRAL B MESONS WITH SEMILEPTONIC DECAYS IN THE BABAR DETECTOR written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutral B meson, consisting of a b quark and an anti-d quark, can mix (oscillate) to its own anti-particle through second-order weak interactions. The measurement of the mixing frequency can constrain the quark mixing matrix in the Standard Model of particle physics. The PEP-II B-factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center provides a very large data sample that enables us to make measurements with much higher precisions than previous measurements, and to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The lifetime of the neutral B meson[tau][sub B0] and the B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] mixing frequency[Delta]m[sub d] are measured with a sample of approximately 14,000 exclusively reconstructed B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -][ell][sup+][nu][sub[ell]] signal events, selected from 23 million B[bar B] pairs recorded at the[Upsilon](4S)resonance with the BABAR detector at the asymmetric-energy e[sup+]e[sup -] collider, PEP-II. The decay position of the exclusively reconstructed B is determined by the charged tracks in the final state, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is known unambiguously from the charge of the lepton. The decay position of the other B is determined inclusively, and its b-quark flavor at the time of decay is determined (tagged) with the charge of tracks in the final state, where identified leptons or kaons give the most information. The decay time difference of two B mesons in the event is calculated from the distance between their decay vertices and the Lorentz boost of the center of mass. Additional samples of approximately 50,000 events are selected for studies of background events. The lifetime and mixing frequency, along with wrong-tag probabilities and the time-difference resolution function, are measured simultaneously with an unbinned maximum-likelihood fit that uses, for each event, the measured difference in B decay times ([Delta]t), the calculated uncertainty on[Delta]t, the signal and background probabilities, and b-quark tagging for the other B meson. The results are[tau][sub B[sup 0]]= (1.523[sub -0.023][sup+0.024][+-] 0.022) ps and[Delta]m[sub d]= (0.492[+-] 0.018[+-] 0.013) ps[sup -1], where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical correlation coefficient between[tau][sub B[sup 0]] and[Delta]m[sub d] is -0.22. This result is consistent with the current world average values, the total errors are comparable with other most-precise measurements.

Book Study of Charged Particle Species Produced in Association with B0 B and Bs Mesons in Proton Anti proton Collisions at S 1 2

Download or read book Study of Charged Particle Species Produced in Association with B0 B and Bs Mesons in Proton Anti proton Collisions at S 1 2 written by Denys Usynin and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study the yields of charged kaons, charged pions, and protons produced in association with B mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at center of mass energy 1960 GeV using 355 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This is the first reported measurements of these yields at a hadron collider. The B mesons are reconstructed using their semileptonic decays: B{sup 0} {yields} {ell}{sup +}D{sup -}X, D{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -}; B{sup 0} {yields} {ell}{sup +}D*{sup -}X, D*{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{bar D}{sup 0}, {bar D}{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}; B{sup +} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{bar D}{sup 0}X, {bar D}{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}; B{sub s}{yields}{ell}{sup +}D{sub s}{sup -}X, D{sub s}{sup -} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{phi}, {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}. The K, {pi}, and p are identified using the Time of Flight detector (TOF), the CDF spectrometer, and the specific ionization (dE/dx) measured in the central drift chamber (COT). The fraction of charged kaons produced in association with {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} mesons is found to be larger than the fraction produced in association with the {bar B}{sup 0} and B{sup -} mesons, as expected from naive models of heavy quark hadronization to mesons. The particle species yields are found to be in qualitative agreement with simulation of B meson production in hadron collisions from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo, although the yield of kaons around {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} mesons is found to be larger in the simulation when compared to the data. These studies are important for understanding methods of identifying the flavor of {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} mesons in measurement of {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} flavor oscillations and charge conjugation-parity (CP) violation in {bar B}{sub s}{sup 0} meson decays.

Download or read book The B bar B Production Cross Section and Correlations in P bar P Collisions At radical written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present measurements of the b[bar b] production cross section and angular correlations between the b and[bar b]-quarks in p[bar p] collisions using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron operating at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. The b-quark production cross section for[vert-bar]y[sup b][vert-bar]1.0 and[rho][sub[tau]][sup b] 8 GeV/c is extracted and found to be consistent with next-to-leading order QCD predictions. In addition, the angular correlations between the b and[bar b]-quarks are found to agree in shape with next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays

Download or read book CP Violation in Flavor tagged Bs J psi phi Decays written by Khaldoun Makhoul and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, we present the results of a time-dependent angular analysis of Bs -+ J/,0 decays performed with the use of initial-state flavor tagging. CP violation is observed in this mode through the interference of decay without net mixing and decay with net mixing, that is, Bs -- J/0 and Bs -+ B, -+ J/q0. The time-dependent angular analysis is used to extract the decay widths of the heavy and light B, eigenstates and the difference between these decay widths AF, - FL - FH. Initial-state flavor tagging is used to determine the matter-antimatter content of the B. mesons at production time. We combine flavor tagging with the angular analysis, which statistically determines the contributions of the CP-even and CP- odd components at decay time, to measure the CP-violating phase 0,. The phase 3, is expressed in terms of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix as s - arg ( -VtsV4/VcsV*b), and is predicted by the Standard Model to be close to zero, O3SM = 0.02. In the measurement of AF, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.7 fb- of luminosity, collected at the CDF experiment from proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy f = 1.96 TeV. In the measurement of Ps, we use a dataset corresponding to 1.3 fb-1 of collected luminosity. We measure AF, = (0.071+0.064 ± 0.007) ps-1 using the time-dependent angular analysis. Combining the angular analysis with flavor-tagging, we find that assuming the Standard Model predictions of p/ and AF, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 33%. We obtain a suite of associated results which are discussed in detail in this dissertation alongside the main results.
