Download or read book Visions of Filth written by Teresa Peris Fuentes and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how notions of deviancy and social control are dramatized in the novels of the late nineteenth-century Spanish realist author Benito Pérez Galdós. Galdós’s treatment of prostitutes, alcoholics, beggars and vagrants is studied within the context of the socio-cultural and medical debates circulating during the period. Drawing on Foucault’s very specific conceptualisation of the idea of control through discourses, the book analyses how Galdós’s novels interacted with contemporary debates on poverty and deviancy – notably, discourses on hygiene, domesticity and philanthropy. It is proposed that Galdós’s view of marginal social groups was much more open-minded, shrewd and liberal than the often inflexible pronouncements made by contemporary professional voices.

Book The Pathology of Mind a Study of Its Distempers Deformities and Disorders Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pathology of Mind a Study of Its Distempers Deformities and Disorders Classic Reprint written by Henry Maudsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pathology of Mind a Study of Its Distempers, Deformities, and Disorders The first edition of The Physiology and Pathology of fifimi appeared in 1867, and a second edition in the following year. In 1876 the first part of it was published as a separate volume entitled The Physiology of Mind, and in 187 9 the second part followed in separate form as The Pathology of Mind. This book, although retaining the old name, is virtually new; for while old matter has been left out and much fresh matter added, the whole has been recast, the form of its presentation changed, and the text entirely rewritten. As it would not have been proper to give it a new title, since it deals with the same subject as the former treatise, and necessarily incorporates the revised substance of what was contained in it, I have retained the old title, only adding a supplementary notification of the present scope of the contents. As it is now, the work may be said to present the last ripe fruits of observations and reflections the first green fruits of which appeared so long ago. Book A Social History of Modern Spain

Download or read book A Social History of Modern Spain written by Adrian Shubert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insightful and accessible, A Social History of Modern Spain is the first comprehensive social history of modern Spain in any language. Adrian Shubert analyzes the social development of Spain since 1800. He explores the social conflicts at the root of the Spanish Civil War and how that war and the subsequent changes from democracy to Franco and back again have shaped the social relations of the country. Paying equal attention to the rural and urban worlds and respecting the great regional diversity within Spain, Shubert draws a sophisticated picture of a country struggling with the problems posed by political, economic, and social change. He begins with an overview of the rural economy and the relationship of the people to the land, then moves on to an analysis of the work and social lives of the urban population. He then discusses the changing roles of the clergy, the military, and the various local government, community, and law enforcement officials. A Social History of Modern Spain concludes with an analysis of the dramatic political, economic, and social changes during the Franco regime and during the subsequent return to democracy.

Book The People Place and Space Reader

Download or read book The People Place and Space Reader written by Jen Jack Gieseking and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People, Place, and Space Reader brings together the writings of scholars, designers, and activists from a variety of fields to make sense of the makings and meanings of the world we inhabit. They help us to understand the relationships between people and the environment at all scales, and to consider the active roles individuals, groups, and social structures play in creating the environments in which people live, work, and play. These readings highlight the ways in which space and place are produced through large- and small-scale social, political, and economic practices, and offer new ways to think about how people engage the environment in multiple and diverse ways. Providing an essential resource for students of urban studies, geography, sociology and many other areas, this book brings together important but, till now, widely dispersed writings across many inter-related disciplines. Introductions from the editors precede each section; introducing the texts, demonstrating their significance, and outlining the key issues surrounding the topic. A companion website, PeoplePlaceSpace.org, extends the work even further by providing an on-going series of additional reading lists that cover issues ranging from food security to foreclosure, psychiatric spaces to the environments of predator animals.
