This book is an ideal introduction to the thinkers who have shaped Christian history and the culture of much of the world. Writing in a lively, accessible style, Jonathan Hill takes us on an enlightening journey from the first to the twenty first centuries. He shows us the key Christian thinkers through the ages - ranging from Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine and Aquinas through to Luther, Wesley, Kierkegaard and Barth - placing them in their historical context and assessing their contribution to the development of Christianity.

Download or read book Origins of Impressionism written by Gary Tinterow and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1994 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This handsome publication, which accompanies a major exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a lively and engaging account of the artistic scene in Paris in the 1860s, the years that witnessed the beginnings of Impressionism. For the first time the interactions and relationships among the group of painters who became known as the Impressionists are examined without the overworn art historical polarities commonly evoked: academic versus avant-garde, classicist versus romantic, realist versus impressionist. A host of strong personalities contributed to this history, and their style evolved into a new way of looking at the world. These artists wanted above all to give an impression of truth and to have an impact on or even to shock the public. And they wanted to measure up to or surpass their elders. This complex and rich environment is presented here - the grand old men and the young turks encounter each other, the Salon pontificates, and the new generation moves fitfully ahead, benignly but always with determination." "Origins of Impressionism gives a day-by-day, year-by-year study of the genesis of an epoch-making style." "Bibliographies and provenances are provided for each of the almost two hundred works in the exhibition, and there is an illustrated chronology. With more than two hundred superb colorplates, this informative survey is an essential work for both the general reader and the scholar."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The Paintings of Lucas Van Leyden written by Elise Lawton Smith and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lucas van Leyden (1494?-1533) was a remarkably versatile artist. His art, noted for its realism, dramatic power, and careful execution, ranges from the small half-length narratives of his youth to the carefully constructed, multifigured representations of his later years." "Until quite recently Lucas's oeuvre was inflated with inferior copies or stylistically unrelated works, leading one scholar to describe his painting career as inconsistent and illogical. Within the last fifteen years, however, his production and development as a painter have been redefined. Despite this renewed interest, The Paintings of Lucas van Leyden is the first comprehensive appraisal of Lucas's paintings." "Smith's survey of the biographical data focuses on Lucas's disputed birth date, his artistic training, and his travels to the southern Netherlands, which brought him into contact with two of the most significant northern artists of the early sixteenth century, Albrecht Durer and Jan Gossaert. Smith reveals the influence of their work, along with the prints of Marcantonio Raimondi, on Lucas's stylistic development. His paintings are also examined with reference to recurring thematic motifs. The early allegorical genre panels - with depictions of gaming, fortune-telling, and betrothal scenes - constitute an important transition in the movement of Netherlandish art away from its roots in the medieval church, providing Lucas with themes that reappeared in his later years. Most significant, the underlying topos of the Power of Women, with its corollary warning against the temptations of the flesh, was repeated in certain of his Old Testament paintings." "The catalogue raisonne contains entries on the extant originals as well as the numerous sixteenth- and seventeenth-century copies after lost works. These inclusions double the number of compositions firmly in Lucas's oeuvre, providing us with a richer understanding of his accomplishments as a painter." "This book will be an important addition to the history of Netherlandish art, as well as an aid to students of Flemish, German, and Italian art. In addition, it should appeal to cultural historians who are concerned with issues such as the representation of women, allegories of gaming, and artistic responses to the Reformation."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book Prince of Europe written by Philip Mansel and published by Orion Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Habsburg courtier Charles-Joseph Prince de Ligne seduced and symbolized eighteenth-century Europe. Speaking French, the international language of the day, he travelled between Paris and St Petersburg, charming everyone he met. He stayed with Madame du Barry, dined with Frederick the Great and travelled to the Crimea with Catherine the Great. But Ligne was more than a frivolous charmer. He participated in and recorded some of the most important events and movements of his day: the Enlightenment; the struggle for mastery in Germany; the decline of the Ottoman Empire; the birth of German nationalism; and the wars to liberate Europe from Napoleon. He had surprisingly radical views, believing for example in property rights for women, legal rights for Jews and the redistribution of wealth. He was also a highly respected writer and his books on gardens, his letters from the Crimea and his epigrams are considered minor classics of French literature.

Download or read book The Hierarchies of Cuckoldry and Bankruptcy written by Charles Fourier and published by Imagining Science. This book was released on 2011 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admired by Marx and Engels, the Surrealists, the Situationists, Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes, the great utopian socialist Charles Fourier (1772-1837) has been many things to many people: a proto-feminist, a Surrealist ancestor, a cantankerous cosmologist, a social critic and humorist and to this day one of France's truest visionary thinkers. He was also, as this volume demonstrates, a maniacal taxonomist. In this zoological guidebook to cuckoldry and commerce, Fourier offers a caustic critique of the bankruptcy of marriage and the prostitution of the economy, and the hypocrisies of a civilization that over-regulates sexual congress while allowing the financial sector to screw over the public. Gathered together here for the first time are Fourier's two "Hierarchies" --humorously regimented parades of civilization's cheaters and cheated-on in the domestic sphere of sex and the economic sphere of buying and selling commodities. "The Hierarchy of Cuckoldry" --translated into English for the first time--presents 72 species of the male cuckold, ranging from such "common class" cases as the Health-Conscious Cuckolds, to the short-horned Sympathetic, Optimist and Mystical Cuckolds, and the Long-horned varieties of the Irate, Disgraced and Posthumous Cuckolds. For Fourier, these amount to 72 manifestations of women's "secret insurrection" against the institution of marriage. "The Hierarchy of Bankruptcy" presents 36 species of the fraudulent bankrupt: a range of Light, Grandiose, and Contemptible shades of financial manipulators who force creditors, cities and even nations to bail them out of ultimately profitable bankruptcies. In these attacks on the morality of monogamy and the perils of laissez-faire capitalism, Fourier's "Hierarchies" resonate uncannily with our contemporary world.
