Book Leaving Parnassus

Download or read book Leaving Parnassus written by Seth Adam Whidden and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaving Parnassus: The Lyric Subject in Verlaine and Rimbaud considers how the crisis of the lyric subject in the middle of the nineteenth century in France is a direct response to the aesthetic principles of Parnassian poetry, which dominated the second half of the century much more than critics often think. The poets considered here rebel against the strict confines of traditional and contemporary poetry and attempt to create radically new discursive practices. Specifically, the close readings of poems apply recent studies of subjectivity in poetry and focus on the works of Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud to see how each subverts the dominant tradition of French poetry in a unique way. Whereas previous studies considered isolated aspects of each poet's lyric subject, Leaving Parnassus shows that the situation of the lyric is a source of subversion throughout the poets' entire work, and as such it is crucial to our full understanding of their respective innovations.

Book Madame Bovary New Edition

Download or read book Madame Bovary New Edition written by Gustave Flaubert and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madame Bovary is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word"). Long established as one of the greatest novels ever written, the book has often been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. Henry James writes: "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment." Giorgio de Chirico said that in his opinion "from the narrative point of view, the most perfect book is Madame Bovary by Flaubert".

Book The Emergence of Social Space

Download or read book The Emergence of Social Space written by Kristin Ross and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1870s in France - Rimbaud's moment, and the subject of this book - is a decade virtually ignored in most standard histories in France. Yet it was the moment of two significant spatial events: France's expansion on a global scale, and, in the spring of 1871, the brief existence on the Paris Commune - the construction of the revolutionary urban space. Arguing that space, as a social fact, is always political and strategic, Kristin Ross has written a book that is at once a history and geography of the Commune's anarchist culture - its political language and social relations, its values, strategies, and stances. Central to her analysis of the Commune as a social space and oppositional culture is a close textual reading of Arthur Rimabaud's poetry. His poems - a common thread running through the book - are one set of documents among many in Ross's recreation of the Communard experience. Rimbaud, Paul Lafargue, and the social geographer lise Reclus serve as emblematic figures moving within and on the periphery of the Commune; in their resistance to the logic and economy of the capitalist conception of work, in their challenge to work itself as a term of identity, all three posed a threat to the existing order. Ross looks at these and other emancipatory notions as aspects of Communard life, each with an analogous strategy in Rimbaud's poetry. Applying contemporary theory, to a wealth of little-known archival material, she has written a fresh, persuasive, and original book.

Book The Subject in Rimbaud

Download or read book The Subject in Rimbaud written by Karin J. Dillman and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1984 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study focuses on the transformation in the role and the nature of the linguistic subject in Rimbaud's work, and on a parallel change in poetic form. The formulas «On me pense» and «Je est un autre» serve as the basis of the analyses. Each formulation represents a phase in the transformation of the subject: of its theoretical definition as well as of its poetic functioning in the text. The analysis shows that the changes in poetic form must be considered in relation to the theory of the subject, and that the subject as je remains the locus of Rimbaud's poetic discourse.

Book Rousseau s Legacy

Download or read book Rousseau s Legacy written by Dennis Porter and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dennis Porter argues in Rousseau's Legacy that this cultural idea of the writer - as distinct from the more traditional "man of letters" - first emerged in France in the decades preceding the French revolution, and has continued to exercise a nominative power over intellectual life well into our own day. In Porter's paradigm, Jean-Jacques Rousseau serves as a seminal figure who combined radical critique of existing institutions with a new form of confessional writing and a suspicion of the art of literature.
