Download or read book Object Lessons on the Human Body the Original Classic Edition written by Margaret W. Lewis and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a high quality book of the original classic edition. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: As the blood flows from the heart, through the arteries, it gives nourishment to every part of the body, and carries away the impurities it meets, which makes it black and thick; when it comes through the veins, back to the heart, it is not fit to be used, so it goes to the lungs to be purified by the fresh air; then it returns to the heart to be sent again throughout the body; this happens once in from three to eight minutes, and is called the circulation of the blood. ...[3] NOTE.?A fuller description of the Nerves of the Brain: Twelve pairs of nerves pass from the base of the brain; the first pair, called the nerves of smell, to my nose; the second pair, called the nerves of sight, to my eyes; the third, fourth, and sixth pairs to the muscles of my eyes; the fifth pair to my forehead, eyes, nose, ears, tongue, teeth, and different parts of my face; the seventh pair to different parts of my face; the eighth pair, called the nerves of hearing, to the inner part of my ear; the ninth pair to my mouth, tongue, and throat; the twelfth pair to my tongue; the eleventh pair to my neck; the tenth pair to my neck, throat, lungs, stomach, and different parts of my body. ...To the Bones.?You have already learned that the bones require to be supplied with good blood to make them strong and healthy, and that alcohol does not make good blood, so we need spend no time in deciding that alcoholic liquors do injury to the bones, and that the bones of those who drink these liquors are less likely to heal, when broken, than those of persons whose blood has not been poisoned by alcohol. ...In the lessons you have learned you have been taught about the harm done by alcohol to the body and the mind; can you tell, from what you have seen of drunken people, in what other way alcoholic liquors hurt them They make people waste their money; they make them waste their time; they make them cross; they make them fight; they make them say silly and wicked words; they sometimes make fathers and mothers hurt their children; they make people lose their good name; they often make them do things for which they are sent to prison. ...More about the Harm done by Tobacco.?Some persons who continue to use tobacco are strong enough to throw off the poison through the lungs, the skin, and in other ways; but how much better it would be if they were not obliged to employ their strength in getting rid of that which does them no good, which only gives a little pleasure to nobody but themselves, and often makes those suffer who are compelled to remain where they are having a good smoke.

Book Practical Work in the School Room

Download or read book Practical Work in the School Room written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Work in the School Room: A Transcript of the Object Lessons on the Human Body Children should learn these lessons on the Human Body, that the may better value and take care of "the house they live in." Each lesson should be very carefully developed when taught. No intelligent teacher will permit the recitation of the formulas to degenerate into rote-work. Children are not parrots. II. The following plan has been observed in the preparation of this work: - First, A model lesson, as given in our own class-rooms, to show how each subject should be developed and taught. Second, A formula, embodying the principal facts, etc., given during the development and teaching. Third, Questions for the formula, intended to aid in concert or individual recitation of the summaries it contains. Fourth, Directions for touching. These are given very minutely, because we think appropriate touching, or pointing to the part under description, when convenient, adds much interest to the recitation; it makes the facts seem more real to the children. Fifth, Questions on the lesson, designed to recall instructions, given during its development, which may or may not be found in the formula. These questions are important; therefore, do not omit them. Use them frequently. The pupils may reply in their own words, if this method is deemed preferable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passionate advocate of identity studies and a keen reader of U.S. institutional politics, Robyn Wiegman turns her attention in Object Lessons to the critical practices and political ambitions of identity-based fields. In a series of case studies drawn from womens studies, queer studies, ethnic studies, and American studies, she examines the unspoken belief that better theory will produce progressive social change in order to consider the political desire that fuels current scholarly debate. Her metacritical analysis is neither a defense nor a dismissal of such political commitment but a sustained inquiry into the hope it generates, the thinking it inspires, and the conformity it inadvertently demands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons: How Nineteenth-Century Americans Learned to Make Sense of the Material World examines the ways material things--objects and pictures--were used to reason about issues of morality, race, citizenship, and capitalism, as well as reality and representation, in the nineteenth-century United States. For modern scholars, an "object lesson" is simply a timeworn metaphor used to describe any sort of reasoning from concrete to abstract. But in the 1860s, object lessons were classroom exercises popular across the country. Object lessons helped children to learn about the world through their senses--touching and seeing rather than memorizing and repeating--leading to new modes of classifying and comprehending material evidence drawn from the close study of objects, pictures, and even people. In this book, Sarah Carter argues that object lessons taught Americans how to find and comprehend the information in things--from a type-metal fragment to a whalebone sample. Featuring over fifty images and a full-color insert, this book offers the object lesson as a new tool for contemporary scholars to interpret the meanings of nineteenth-century material, cultural, and intellectual life.

In its preparation a logical order has been Observed in the arrangement of subjects and in the sequence of topics, so that each lesson may be presented to the class orally and objectively before being assigned from the text. The sub jcet of each topic has been placed in the form of a question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Object Lessons: And How to Give Them; Second Series for Intermediate and Grammar Schools There is, however, another source of knowledge of material bodies. In this case the mental impressions are derived from within the body, and are due to muscular exertion. It is by muscular feeling that we estimate the amount of force required to overcome resistance. Thus we get ideas of elasticity and weight from the amount of active energy put forth by the muscles to overcome inertia in the one case and gravitation in the other. If a weight is placed in the hand we are con scious of a certain amount of force expended to keep it from falling; if the weight is increased we are conscious of an increased expenditure of muscular energy. The mental impressions, formed by and through the senses, including muscular feeling, are called sensations. Book Primary Lessons in Human Physiology

Download or read book Primary Lessons in Human Physiology written by Oliver Peebles Jenkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology These lessons have been prepared as a guide to the study of the human body; and while, no doubt, the teacher who undertakes to teach the subject of this little book is fully competent to do so, yet the writer may be pardoned for giving expression to his views in regard to the true place of such a book. The writer would insist that the book be used only as a guide to such study and not the sole object to be studied. The human body itself should be the object studied. To supplement this, abundant materials from the bodies of lower animals should be used as a means to give true conceptions of the parts of the human body and its actions. If the teacher had sufficient time to give complete individual direction, a book would be of questionable use in this connection. If this or any other elementary text-book in physiology is used simply as a book to be learned and recited, the time spent on it is worse than wasted. The terms used in the description of the parts of the body and their actions can not have their proper meanings unless the real objects are seen. To attempt to cram children's minds with terms which to them stand either for nothing, or for vague conceptions wholly different from those for which the terms have been chosen, is doing the children a great injury. This procedure is not only harmful but unnecessary. Many of the parts of the body can be put under study and their operations carefully observed and analyzed. The lower animals can furnish the rest of the illustrations. A bone is a bone, the animal kingdom through. The same may be said for muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and all other parts that make up the body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
