Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part anthropological history, part informed critique, Encounters examines the relations between the people of southeastern Labrador and the many visitors who have come to fish, heal the sick, and extract the region's resources. John Kennedy presents the latest archaeological, genealogical, and ethno-historical research that changes scholarly understandings of southeastern Labrador. Departing from the conventional view that coastal Labrador has distinct Inuit and non-Inuit regions, he argues that the coast should be viewed as a continuum of "Inuitness." Encounters unravels the social implications of the region's complex mercantile fishery, describes how twentieth-century military and resource development have impacted Labrador's seasonal economy, and suggests that Newfoundland continues to use Labrador as a colony. Kennedy uses field research he conducted in 2013 to describe the origins, current economies, and future challenges of the region's tiny villages. Although he is a strong supporter of Aboriginal land claims, Kennedy explores the impact of identity politics in the region, showing how land claims based solely on geography can unintentionally create inequities. Drawing on decades of field and archival research, Kennedy demonstrates how Aboriginal politics are transforming society in southeastern Labrador, empowering local people to overcome the stigmas of history and finally acknowledge their Inuit ancestry.

Book Our Life on Lear s Room Labrador

Download or read book Our Life on Lear s Room Labrador written by Greta Hussey and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Because of the scarcity of cod in Conception Bay in the early 1920s, my father decided to go to the Labrador coast and try his luck as hundreds of others were doing. He went as a skipper with his own fishing crew. Mother used to go along to save the expense of a cook so, at an early age I was taken along with the family. By the time I was married, I had spent sixteen summers on the coast. Fifteen of those were spent at Batteau and the other one at Five Islands, a distance of five or six miles to the south." This is Greta Hussey's account of her early years on Labrador, where Newfoundland fishermen and their families set up shore fishing rooms to prosecute the inshore cod fishery. Her account is simple yet compelling as she describes the trip north on the Kyle, setting up the fishing room, the Labradorians, the typical day of a fisherman, curing fish in the fall, the hard life of a young girl cooking for a crew, native skills, folk medicine, making do with little, and on the lighter side, games and amusements to break up the long days of work. Come along on a journey to a world of yaffles and bawns, bakeapples and scruncheons, and in the stage meet headers, splitters, and cut-throats!

Book People of the Bays and Headlands

Download or read book People of the Bays and Headlands written by John Charles Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kennedy (anthropology, Memorial U. of Newfoundland) explores the little known European settlers of southeastern Labrador between the Chautea and Sandwich Bays. He shows how their annual migration between farming and fishing sites has been interrupted during the 20th century and the people have become centralized and dependent as in other rural areas. Among the other highlights are the role of Inuit enclaves in the early European settlement, the impact of the Grenville mission, industrial and military developments, and how people adjusted to some intrusions and not to others. Book Labrador Odyssey

Download or read book Labrador Odyssey written by Ronald Rompkey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curwen, a young medical doctor, documented his impressions of the Labrador coast while distributing clothing and supplies as part of Grenfell's "mission." The journal entries are Victorian toned, and offer insights into the politics of the area, conditions of the fishing schooners, the lives of the settlers, the Moravian Brethren, and commentary on his captain, Grenfell, as well as the countryside they encountered. The editor has provided an introduction that places the journal in a historical context, and has added annotations, and official letters and reports written by Grenfell to supplement Curwen's account. Interesting photographs taken by the doctor accompany the text. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
