Book Obesity Smoking and Fatty Liver Disease

Download or read book Obesity Smoking and Fatty Liver Disease written by Amiya P. Sinha-Hikim and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Organization Organization estimates that over 1.9 billion people worldwide are now obese or overweight [body mass index (BMI) > 27 Kg/m2]. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is now recognized as the most devastating complications of obesity. Intimate relationship exists between obesity, innate (neutrophils, dendritic cells, macrophages, mast cells, and eosinophils) and adaptive (B and T lymphocytes) immune cells. Cells of the innate immune system produce inflammatory cytokines, and other factors leading to impaired insulin secretion and insulin resistance. Likewise, B lymphocytes (mostly B2 cells) are activated in obese adipose tissue and contribute to proinflammatory activation of adipose tissue macrophages and T cells resulting in insulin resistance. Thus, obesity-induced low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue, liver, skeletal muscle, and pancreas not only activates the innate and adaptive systems affecting metabolic homeostasis, it also results in fibrosis and necrosis. It is now becoming increasingly evident that fibrosis is a major contributor to metabolic dysregulation in obese and T2D patients and that advanced liver fibrosis leads to cirrhosis and death. The health risks associated with obesity are further exaggerated by smoking. This research topic consisting of 10 articles (9 reviews and one original) provide a comprehensive assessment of the impact of obesity on immunometabolism, cardiac functions, the connections of nicotine to NAFLD, the expression of hepatic carcinoembryonic antigen related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1), the role chromogranin A (CgA) and its peptides pancreastatin (PST) and catestatin (CST) in insulin sensitivity, the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, and the alternate RNA splicing.

The next article focuses on the hepatic pathology seen in patients with obesity-related liver disease and those with malnutrition. The next five articles are focused on NAFLD and provide in-depth data on the natural history and treatment strategies for patients with NAFLD. The next six articles deal with the impact of obesity on other liver diseases and on special populations including children and liver-transplant recipients. The final article provides the most updated information regarding genomics and genetic targets that may provide better prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers and more personalized treatment targets for patients with NAFLD. Cutting-edge information in this issue will help readers gain better understanding of the natural history and pathogenesis of primary and secondary liver diseases associated with obesity. Book Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ECAB

Download or read book Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ECAB written by Sudeep Khanna and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a common cause of chronic liver disease, and its incidence is rising worldwide. Understanding its pathogenesis, biochemical parameters, histological grading and staging, and its management is a vital issue in today’s clinical practice. It appears to be linked directly to the growing epidemic of obesity in adults as well as in children. Thus, in a sense, NAFLD is a self-inflicted liver disease, much like alcoholic liver disease. The exact causes responsible for the development of NAFLD have not been established yet. However, some researchers consider that cluster of disorders that increases the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stroke may be the factor behind development of NAFLD. Most patients with NAFLD have no symptoms or signs of liver disease at the time of diagnosis. In these patients, abnormal liver function tests are often discovered incidentally. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is that stage of the spectrum that involves fat accumulation (steatosis), inflammation (hepatitis), and scarring (fibrosis) in the liver. Those who have fatty liver or hepatic steatosis with non-specific inflammation as fatty liver with non-specific inflammation generally have a benign longterm prognosis, whereas those who have NASH can progress to cirrhosis. NASH-related cirrhosis may have similar prognosis as cirrhosis from other causes. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is part of the spectrum of NAFLD, and screening for HCC seems reasonable in patients who have NASH-related cirrhosis. No established treatment is available for NAFLD. Some empiric treatment strategies have been suggested. Presumably, weight loss through exercise and diet modification along with insulinsensitizing agents will help reverse fatty infiltration of the liver. Its incidence is reportedly on the rise the world over as well as in India. Realizing its significance, there is now greater understanding of its etiology, pathogenesis, and management. The efforts of Elsevier have been directed toward addressing these aspects. Elsevier has thus pooled its existing resources with those of the internationally acclaimed Gastroenterologists of India who have chosen to share their rich clinical knowledge, experience, and expertize to serve the practitioners and patient community.

  • ISBN : 1789857090
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book Ultrasound Elastography written by Monica Lupsor-Platon and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastography, the science of creating noninvasive images of mechanical characteristics of tissues, has been rapidly evolving in recent years. The advantage of this technique resides in the ability to rapidly detect and quantify the changes in the stiffness of soft tissues resulting from specific pathological or physiological processes. Ultrasound elastography is nowadays applied especially on the liver and breast, but the technique has been increasingly used for other tissues including the thyroid, lymph nodes, spleen, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, prostate, and the musculoskeletal and vascular systems. This book presents some of the applications of strain and shear-wave ultrasound elastography in hepatic, pancreatic, breast, and musculoskeletal conditions.
