Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly one-half of an American woman's life is spent after the cessation of reproductive function. A woman of 40 years has an additional life expectancy of nearly 40 years; a woman of 75, over 11 years. This pattern of longevity is likely to continue, so that by the year 2000, it has been estimated, 30 percent of the female population will be postmenopausal. While it is difficult to separate the results of aging from those of estrogen deprivation, it is important that we try to do so, since the results of the latter are amenable to treatment. The medical infirmities resulting from estrogen deprivation take a high toll among postmenopausal women. Nearly 200,000 hip fractures occur annually in this group, resulting in 15,000 deaths and a high morbidity rate. Sleep disorders, compromised sexuality, psychomotor alterations of the climacterium, and urinary tract disorders all contribute to a lowered quality of life. Appropriate treatment of these disturbing postmenopausal conditions requires an understanding of the underlying bio chemical, endocrinologic, psychologic, and pathophysiologic al terations of estrogen deprivation. Toward this end, the reader will find herein chapters dealing with estrogen metabolism in the postmenopausal female, end-organ response to estrogen deprivation, and bone metabolism and osteoporosis. Next, the reader will find chapters dealing with specific or gans, organ systems, or conditions related to the quality of life; for example, sexuality, urinary tract problems, sleep disorders, the breast, sports and exercise, the climacteric, and the psycho biology of the menopause.

Fourteen original contributions, introduced by a major re-evaluative history of lost libraries, offer the first ever comparative discussion of the greatest catastrophes in book history from Mesopotamia and Alexandria to the dispersal of monastic and monarchical book collections, the Nazi destruction of Jewish libraries, and the recent horrifying pillage and burning of books in Tibet, Bosnia and Iraq.

Book Climatic Variability in Sixteenth Century Europe and Its Social Dimension

Download or read book Climatic Variability in Sixteenth Century Europe and Its Social Dimension written by Christian Pfister and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidecadal cooling is known to have occurred in Europe in the final decades of the sixteenth-century. It is still open to debate as to what might have caused the underlying shifts in atmospheric circulation and how these changes affected societies. This book is the fruit of interdisciplinary cooperation among 37 scientists including climatologists, hydrologists, glaciologists, dendroclimatologists, and economic and cultural historians. The known documentary climatic evidence from six European countries is compared to results of tree-ring studies. Seasonal temperature and precipitation are estimated from this data and monthly mean surface pressure patterns in the European area are reconstructed for outstanding anomalies. Results are compared to fluctuations of Alpine glaciers and to changes in the frequency of severe floods and coastal storms. Moreover, the impact of climate change on grain prices and wine production is assessed. Finally, it is convincingly argued that witches at that time were burnt as scapegoats for climatic change.

Book Documents Concerning Central Europe from the Hospital s Rhodian Archives 1314 1428

Download or read book Documents Concerning Central Europe from the Hospital s Rhodian Archives 1314 1428 written by Karl Borchardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documents Concerning Central Europe from the Hospital’s Rhodian Archives, 1314–1428 brings together over 450 texts concerning the Hospitallers during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These texts are crucial sources for understanding the history of the Hospitallers between 1314 and 1428. Whilst some Hospitaller charters and letters have been published elsewhere, few scholarly editions contain enough sources to permit close analysis of the language and contents of these documents. Moreover, most previous editions focus on certain geographical areas, such as Cyprus, Rhodes and the Aegean Islands. In contrast, this book is the first of its kind to focus on central Europe. It brings together 460 texts dated between 1314 to 1428, and two from 1461. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval history and the history of Central Europe, as well as those interested in the legal structures and personal networks within the Order of St. John.
