This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obelisk II, 1976-1977, Vol. 1 Sex. One little word and a captivated audience is guaran teed. Sexual expression has become a cultural and a lifes tyle of its own. College campuses in particular are sex-satu rated. In one form or another, sex is everywhere one turns. There aren't too many left at siu who remember what the dorms were like only six years ago. The present 24-hour visitation, voted on unanimously by the residents them selves, represents a drastic departure from the rigid mores of not so long ago. At that time, visitors of the opposite sex were only allowed in one Sunday a month. Sex draws. And everyone and their uncle are rushing to get on the bandwagon. Theater box offices and adult book stores have been capitalizing on it for years. Now, even the traditionally conservative institutions of society are openly acknowledging the pervasiveness and seeming permanence of the emphasis on sex. After all, when even the President of the United States admits that he has lust for other women in his heart, and in Playboy magazine to boot, it's about time to stop fighting and change with the times. Sexuality services at siu began at the students insist ence in 1970 when information of contraceptive methods was in high demand. Since then, classes and services have expanded greatly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Obelisk, 1932, Vol. 18: Published by the Junior Class, Southern Illinois State Normal University, Carbondale, Illinois Erasmus was perhaps the greatest intel lectual figure of the Renaissance. At a time when Europe was struggling from the grasp of a narrow Scholasticism, he stood for the revival of the classics as a means to a broader Humanism. Further, he was the first great champion of uni versal education, and the first of the edu cators to insist that the quality and amount of education should depend upon ability and not upon wealth, birth, or sex. The Humanism of Erasmus was broad - ao in elusive in fact, that we of the twentieth century, in spite of our increasing disre gard of the classics, still accept his point of view in regard to the e relationship of life and learning. Book The S I N U Obelisk Vol 7 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The S. I. N. U. Obelisk, Vol. 7 There was a time when there was a deep-seated prejudice against the teaching profession, and through three hundred years of literature the pedagogue was held up to scorn by the satirist. He was pictured as a man who belonged to the humblest social class, an uncouth figure equipped with a sort of false scholarship, the butt of all the bright pupils: Shak'espeare, Sir Walter Scott, Goldsmith, Irving and Dickens, each in turn made him the subject of his raillery and the victim of his mockery. Then came a better day, when the teacher began to be looked upon as a leader, and for twenty-five years immediately preceding the world war the teacher held a somewhat enviable position in his community. 'he represented a better social class than the old time school-master; his salary permitted him, and his cultivated taste led him to dress in the same fashion as the banker, the lawyer or the doctor. Thecity superintendent became influential through his alliance with'the professional men and business leaders of the community. The high school principal won for himself a position among these men and a sub stantial place in the regard of the comniunity, because he was usually a member of scientific or literary organizations, and these afiiliations gave him standing in his community. His associates in the high school sharedhis place in the public regard; the teachers in the grades became leaders in the women's clubs, in the literary organizations, and in the civic federations of the communities. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. The Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated from the Renaissance to the present day as well as works known in the Middle Ages. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline - the history of archaeology - these finely illustrated volumes will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, the classics, history, topography, and art and architectural history.
