Book excerpt: Klippan is a village located in the rural south of Sweden for which, in 1962 at the age of 77, Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz was invited to design a church. It was to become his most important commission. St. Petri Klippan is both a modern as well as an archaic structure. The brickwork with its irregular mortar joints, its dark colour and the light-absorbing interior, is modern in its vertical surfaces and archaic in its vaulting. To this day and for many architects searching for a reflective constructional basis for contemporary architecture, St. Petri Klippan is an ideal for another contemporary architecture: one that is matter-of-factual and poetic at thesame time, clear and mysterious, immediately present as well as recessive, credible as architecture as much as it is background to the primary experience.This second O'Neil Ford Monograph reproduces extensive hitherto unpublished archival material as well as the results of a measured survey of the main church with a selection of details by students of the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. Book excerpt: A close interest in the fine arts brought Kyriakos Krokos into early contact with thepainter Alekos Fassianos who sponsored the realisation of Krokos' first significant design. Subsequently awarded the first prize in the competition for the Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki, the commission was to be his largest and most comprehensive architectural statement in terms of a new, free-standing building. However, the much smaller commission of the conversion and remodelling of a second Athenian apartment building, belonging to the Fassianos family, provided the experimental grounds for Krokos' architectural visions and details, many of which would also be realised in the Byzantine Museum. In this subsequent mixed-use building that includes a private art gallery and apartments, both Krokosand Fassianos have realised their vision of a quotidian urban life, in which art andarchitecture are mutually sustaining. This monograph includes five essays and the reproduction of extensive hitherto unpublished archival material, and concludes with a comprehensive selection of photographs.

Book excerpt: From start to finish, it took the Modernist Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, winner of the 1992 Pritzker Prize and designer of The Serpentine Gallery's 2005 Summer Pavilion, 33 years to construct the Bouça Residents' Association Housing in the northern city of Porto--which he realized in association with architect António Madureira. During those years, Siza completed numerous important commissions, including the architecture faculty building at the University of Porto in 1985 and the Fundação Serralves museum of contemporary art in that same city in 1999. In 1988 he restored the Chiado district of Lisbon, Portugal, after a devastating fire; and his Portuguese Pavilion for Lisbon's EXPO 98 was internationally recognized. While Siza was busy with all of these buildings and plans, the first phase of the Bouça project was falling ever deeper into disrepair, hampered by municipal neglect. It has since been brought up to Siza's standards, and this publication appraises the project, now happily completed. Siza's sketches, many of which are published here for the first time, reveal the tenacity of his search for the right solution.
