Book Bach Handel Scarlatti 1685 1985

Download or read book Bach Handel Scarlatti 1685 1985 written by Peter Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-04-18 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1985 celebrated the 300th anniversary of the births of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti. This volume covers all three composers and contains essays from an international team of scholars. Some essays make a contribution towards a better understanding of one or other composer, but at least half of them are concerned with ideas connecting two or even all three of them. The essays are concerned with many aspects of the music - technical, chronological, critical, speculative, theoretical and (importantly) practical - and the distinguished contributors have often endeavoured to ask questions rather than jump to conclusions. Every essay makes fresh points and can open up new avenues for players and (in the broadest sense) students, especially in the present climate of wishing to return to 'authentic conditions of performance'.

Bach said of these chorales: "Those connoisseurs of the art of harmonizing and composing settings will likewise not withhold their praise when they observe with appropriate attentiveness the very unusual manner my father uses to set up harmony in these settings, the natural flow of the inner voices as well as the bass, factors which set these chorale settings apart from any others."

Book Complete Book of Bach Chorales

Download or read book Complete Book of Bach Chorales written by Jerry Silverman and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents 375 of J.S. Bach's surviving chorale harmonizations with singable English translations of the original German text by choral conductor Henry S. Drinker. Printed in an easy-to-read format, this edition was designed to facilitate both analysis of Bach's musical genius in voice leading and renewed performance of these works by congregations. It is hoped that this user-friendly edition will inspire students and congregations alike to take a fresh look at this priceless musical treasure. Today they remain some of the finest examples of voice leading and harmonic movement, making them appropriate study material for any student of music theory and harmony. Chorales are also the root of traditional hymnody, especially from the Lutheran tradition. the chorales were originally text and melody sung a cappella, and were for congregational singing. Chorales were set in four parts for choir use, and are still appropriate for performance in worship services today. Many of the melodies will be familiar to those who sing traditional hymns. Choirs will love singing these beautifully written settings.

Book Comprehensive Musical Analysis

Download or read book Comprehensive Musical Analysis written by John D. White and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback! Evolved from the author's widely used book, The Analysis of Music (Prentice-Hall, 1975; 2nd. ed. Scarecrow Press, 1984), Comprehensive Music Analysis is a guide for acquiring the tools of musical analysis, skills which are essential to every serious musician and musical scholar. The new volume presents material on Heinrich Schenker and reductive linear analysis and additional material on set theoretical analysis. White's theoretical writing is characterized by logic of methodology, clarity of organization, and lucidity of prose. It should be eagerly received by theorists seeking a comprehensive view of current methodology. White's approach to current theoretical dogma is not uncritical. As Gerald Warfield (General Editor of the recent English translation of Schenker's Der Freie Satz) says in his Preface to White's new book,"...we begin to glimpse a powerful tool which does not exist in any single school of theory or musicology, but which draws upon any and all nethodologies as required by the analyst. The opinions in this book are strong. Indeed, there is material which may disturb the dogmatic, yet the author's intentions are clear. White invites you to take your cue for analysis from the compositions themselves rather than from dogma." Replete with musical examples, charts, and diagrams, the book is more than a treatise on analysis, it is a valuable tool for the advanced student of music as well as the musical scholar.

Book Bach s Well Tempered Clavier

Download or read book Bach s Well Tempered Clavier written by Marjorie Wornell Engels and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a musical language involving symbols, numbers, and tonality, J.S. Bach created emotional dimension in the preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier. This book explores the use of that musical language, revealing how Bach used harmonic design and melodic and rhythmic motivic formulas to adhere to the basic doctrine of the Theory of Affects--i.e., that one mood will govern one piece. The book examines the significance of key and the emotional dimension Bach discerned in each tonality; the symbolism of melodic and rhythmic motifs; and the symbolism of numbers. It considers the thematic and rhythmic links between a prelude and its companion fugue in each book, and between a prelude and fugue in Book One and those in the same key in Book Two. It also includes reference to other instrumental works by Bach in the same key and melodic patterns.

Book The Archive of the Sing Akademie zu Berlin Catalogue

Download or read book The Archive of the Sing Akademie zu Berlin Catalogue written by Axel Fischer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Archive of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. Catalogue a complete catalogue of the music archive of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin is now available for the first time since the archive, which disappeared during World War II, was rediscovered in 1999. (The whole work is complete in English and German). Since 2001 the more than 260,000 pages of music manuscripts, copies and first prints (from 17th to early 19th cent.) were revised by two musicologists which compiled an index of shelf marks and an index of composers. Thus detailed searches in the holdings of the archive (which were filmed since 2002 in severeal parts on microfiche at K. G. Saur) are possible for the first time. The Catalogue lists 9,735 works of 1.008 different composers. It provides also a concordance signature – microfiche and therefore serves as a cumulated guide to the microfiche editions, all the more the registers have been revised and improved. The unique collection is introduced by a number of articles by the following musicologists: Axel Fischer (Archive of the Sing-Akademie, Berlin), Christoph Henzel (Hochschule für Musik, Würzburg), Klaus Hortschansky (University of Münster), Matthias Kornemann (Archive of the Sing-Akademie, Berlin), Ulrich Leisinger (Mozarteum, Salzburg), Mary Oleskiewicz (University of Massachusetts Boston), Ralph-J. Reipsch (Zentrum für Telemann-Pflege und -Forschung, Magdeburg), Tobias Schwinger (Berlin).
