Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary appraisal of the Pharisees: who they were, what they taught, and how they’ve been understood and depicted throughout history For centuries, Pharisees have been well known but little understood—due at least in part to their outsized role in the Christian imagination arising from select negative stereotypes based in part on the Gospels. Yet historians see Pharisees as respected teachers and forward-thinking innovators who helped make the Jewish tradition more adaptable to changing circumstances and more egalitarian in practice. Seeking to bridge this gap, the contributors to this volume provide a multidisciplinary appraisal of who the Pharisees actually were, what they believed and taught, and how they have been depicted throughout history. The topics explored within this authoritative resource include: the origins of the Pharisees the meaning of the name “Pharisee” Pharisaic leniency, relative to the temple priesthood, in judicial matters Pharisaic concerns for the Jewish laity Pharisaic purity practices and why they became popular the varying depictions of Pharisaic practices and beliefs in the New Testament Jesus’s relationship to the Pharisees the apostle Paul and his situation within the Pharisaic tradition the question of continuity between the Pharisaic tradition and Rabbinic Judaism the reception history of the Pharisees, including among the rabbis, the church fathers, Rashi, Maimonides, Luther, and Calvin the failures of past scholarship to deal justly with the Pharisees the representations, both positive and negative, of the Pharisees in art, film, passion plays, and Christian educational resources how Christian leaders can and should address the Pharisees in sermons and in Bible studies Following the exploration of these and other topics by a team of internationally renowned scholars, this volume concludes with an address by Pope Francis on correcting the negative stereotypes of Pharisees that have led to antisemitic prejudices and finding resources that “will positively contribute to the relationship between Jews and Christians, in view of an ever more profound and fraternal dialogue.” Contributors: Luca Angelelli, Harold W. Attridge, Vasile Babota, Shaye J. D. Cohen, Philip A. Cunningham, Deborah Forger, Paula Fredriksen, Yair Furstenburg, Massimo Grilli, Susannah Heschel, Angela La Delfa, Amy-Jill Levine, Hermut Löhr, Steve Mason, Eric M. Meyers, Craig E. Book The Taoist Canon

  • Author : Kristofer Schipper
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book The Taoist Canon written by Kristofer Schipper and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 1684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taoism remains the only major religion whose canonical texts have not been systematically arranged and made available for study. This long-awaited work, a milestone in Chinese studies, catalogs and describes all existing texts within the Taoist canon. The result will not only make the entire range of existing Taoist texts accessible to scholars of religion, it will open up a crucial resource in the study of the history of China. The vast literature of the Taoist canon, or Daozang, survives in a Ming Dynasty edition of some fifteen hundred different texts. Compiled under imperial auspices and completed in 1445—with a supplement added in 1607—many of the books in the Daozang concern the history, organization, and liturgy of China's indigenous religion. A large number of works deal with medicine, alchemy, and divination. If scholars have long neglected this unique storehouse of China's religious traditions, it is largely because it was so difficult to find one's way within it. Not only was the rationale of its medieval classification system inoperable for the many new texts that later entered the Daozang, but the system itself was no longer understood by the Ming editors; hence the haphazard arrangement of the canon as it has come down to us. This new work sets out the contents of the Daozang chronologically, allowing the reader to follow the long evolution of Taoist literature. Lavishly illustrated, the first volume ranges from antiquity through the Middle Ages, while the second spans the modern period. Within this frame, texts are grouped by theme and subject. Each one is the subject of a historical abstract that identifies the text's contents, date of origin, and author. Throughout the first two volumes, introductions outline the evolution of Taoism and its spiritual heritage. A third volume offering biographical sketches of frequently mentioned Taoists, multiple indexes, and an extensive bibliography provides critical tools for navigating this guide to one of the fundamental aspects of Chinese culture.

Book Silly Novels by Lady Novelists

Download or read book Silly Novels by Lady Novelists written by George Eliot and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay, originally published anonymously in The Westminster Review (1856), George Eliot examines the state of women's fiction in her time. She lamentingly argues that absurd and banal novels, written by well-to-do women of her time, do great disservice for the overall appreciation of women's intellectual capacities. Eliot divides 'silly novels by lady novelists' into several distinct categories: the mind-and-millinery species, the oracular type and the white-neck-cloth variety. She writes with characteristic sharp wit and insightful intellect in this scathing (but not unfeeling) feminist critique of 'Silly Novels by Lady Novelists'. This edition includes illustrations from the books critiqued by Eliot, along with annotations. George Eliot (Marian/Mary Ann Evans) was born in Warwickshire England in 1819. She went on to become one of England's most astute nineteenth century writers. Eliot is the author of celebrated novels including Adam Bede (1859), Middlemarch (1871-1872) and Daniel Deronda (1876). She also published non-fiction essays, poems and short stories, and was a skilled translator of German-language philosophy, including works by Strauss, Feuerbach and Spinoza. Eliot's writing is characterised by gritty realism entwined with deep empathy and keen insight into human life and ethics. Sarah Bacaller is a writer, researcher and audiobook producer from Melbourne, Australia.

Download or read book Life Before Birth written by Arthur Janov and published by Nti Upstream. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author believes the period of our lives that has the greatest impact on disease and personality formation is our gestation and birth. Recent studies provide evidence that fetal imprinting, an evolutionary strategy to prepare children to cope with life, establishes a permanent set-point in a child's physiology. Mothers highly anxious during pregnancy may give birth to babies prone to mental illness and disease in later life. Low oxygen at birth, drugs taken during pregnancy, and a lack of parental affection in the first years of life may have similar adverse affects. The author puts a case for a reorientation of our approaches to pregnancy and the use of drugs, and above all, to the modes of psychotherapy we implement to treat everything from phobias and compulsions to anxiety and depression.--From book jacket.
