Book Nylund the Sarcographer

Download or read book Nylund the Sarcographer written by Joyelle McSweeney and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. "If Vladimir Nabokov wanted to seduce Nancy Drew, he'd read her NYLUND, THE SARCOGRAPHER one dark afternoon over teacups of whiskey. Welcome to fiction's new femme fatale, Joyelle McSweeney."--Kate Bernheimer. "You thought you knew your own language. This book hands it back to you on a platter and includes the instructional manual for its further use."--Michael Martone. NYLUND, THE SARCOGRAPHER is a baroque noir. Its eponymous protagonist is a loner who tries to comprehend everything from the outside, like a sarcophagus, and with analogously ornate results. The method by which the book was written, and by which Nylund experiences the world, is thus called sarcography. Sarcography is like negative capability on steroids; this ultra-susceptibility entangles Nylund in both a murder plot and a plot regarding his missing sister, Daisy. As the murder plot places Nylund in increasing danger, his sensuous memories become more present than the present itself.

Book Leaving the Atocha Station

Download or read book Leaving the Atocha Station written by Ben Lerner and published by Coffee House Press. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Gordon is a brilliant, if highly unreliable, young American poet on a prestigious fellowship in Madrid, struggling to establish his sense of self and his relationship to art. What is actual when our experiences are mediated by language, technology, medication, and the arts? Is poetry an essential art form, or merely a screen for the reader's projections? Instead of following the dictates of his fellowship, Adam's "research" becomes a meditation on the possibility of the genuine in the arts and beyond: are his relationships with the people he meets in Spain as fraudulent as he fears his poems are? A witness to the 2004 Madrid train bombings and their aftermath, does he participate in historic events or merely watch them pass him by? In prose that veers between the comic and tragic, the self-contemptuous and the inspired, Leaving the Atocha Station is a portrait of the artist as a young man in an age of Google searches, pharmaceuticals, and spectacle. Born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1979, Ben Lerner is the author of three books of poetry The Lichtenberg Figures, Angle of Yaw, and Mean Free Path. He has been a finalist for the National Book Award and the Northern California Book Award, a Fulbright Scholar in Spain, and the recipient of a 2010-2011 Howard Foundation Fellowship. In 2011 he became the first American to win the Preis der Stadt Münster für Internationale Poesie. Leaving the Atocha Station is his first novel.

Book Salamandrine

Download or read book Salamandrine written by Joyelle McSweeney and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. "One would not make love to a Salamandrine during a sandstorm," wrote Aleister Crowley, anticipating by some sixty years the note of caution that Tarpaulin Sky must attach to the Black Book whose image now burns before you: Dear Reader, banish all received notions of narrative, of language itself. Masquerading as a collection of short stories, SALAMANDRINE is a channeled text, moonchild, unholy offspring of poetry and Loser Occult. Refracting the dread and isolation of contemporary life through a series of formal/generic lenses, producing a distorted, attenuated, spasmatic experience of time, as accompanies motherhood, Salamandrine renders impossible any thinking in terms of conventional temporalities or even causalities, let alone their narrative effects. SALAMANDRINE is the high magick of art so low it crawls. Like a toddler at a poetry reading. With a taste for achilles heels. Hell-bent on bringing literature itself to its knees. "If you would recover the empire over the Salamanders, purify and exalt the Natural Fire that is within you." Abbe de Villars "He who shrinks from the flames will never command Salamanders." Arthur Edward Waite"

Download or read book To Lose to Pretend written by Chris O. Cook and published by Brooklyn Arts Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poetry of Chris Cook is evidence of a fine mind at work, a collection of poems that never settles for the obvious. His work probes the apathy and alienation of his generation, wielding poetics like a cudgel to extract the essential from the incoherence of pop culture vapidity that we have accepted as our metaphor. Startlingly honest, unafraid of humor, these poems force you to sit down and take notice. -Cheeni Rao

Book Stars of the Night Commute

Download or read book Stars of the Night Commute written by Ana Božičević and published by Tarpaulin Sky Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ana Božic(evic''s work is sort of animist--it's either about silence or the racket of the world. How does she do it? Clicks the switch to say it's silent & it's happening then on a distant tiny stage. She's muttering, and then it's a story and a very good one. I mean in poetry at some point you don't know what the writer means. In Ana's work I watch "it" vanish (all the time) & I trust it."--Eileen Myles.

Cheng's hybrid collection Moon: letters, maps, poems draws on various Chinese mythologies about women, particularly that of Chang'E (the Lady in the Moon), uncovering the shadow stories of our myths--with the belief that there is always an underbelly. Book Sometimes the Air in the Room Goes Missing

Download or read book Sometimes the Air in the Room Goes Missing written by Dana Green and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Dana Green's debut collection of stories, SOMETIMES THE AIR IN THE ROOM GOES MISSING, explores how storytelling changes with each iteration, each explosion, each mutation. Told through multiple versions, these are stories of weapons testing, sheep that can herd themselves into watercolors, and a pregnant woman whose water breaks every day for nine months stories told with an unexpected syntax and a sense of deja vu: narrative as echo. "I love Dana Green's wild mind and the beautiful flux of these stories. Here the wicked simmers with the sweet, and reading is akin to watching birds. How lucky, and how glad I am, to have this book in my hands." Noy Halloand "Language becomes a beautiful problem amid the atomic explosions and nuclear families and strange symmetries and southwestern deserts and frail human bodies blasted by cancer that comprise Dana Green's bracing debut, which reminds us every ordinary moment, every ordinary sentence, is an impending emergency." Lance Olsen"

Book Womonster

    Book Details:
  • Author : Olivia Cronk
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-07-07
  • ISBN : 9781939460226
  • Pages : pages

Download or read book Womonster written by Olivia Cronk and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the form of two long poems, "Interro-Porn" and "Chenille," _Womonster_ explores the often monstrous and buffoonish impossibility of a coherent self, even as its speakers take great pleasure in the performance of selves. Everywhere absorbing and leaking other media, _Womonster_ is a "sloppy" text, at once nauseating and thrilling, psychedelic and domestic. "Olivia Cronk's Womonster is a performative feat, a book that makes being out of pretending.... I was thrilled and moved by this wild book, which moves from an explosive rejection of narrative to the creation of a theater of home, that shabby, beautiful structure built with girly hope, our fortification against loss." (Suzanne Scanlon) "With _Womonster_, Olivia Cronk shows that we are other people as much as we are our various selves. We are the people who share our lives; we are our loved ones and our aggressors. If this makes us monsters, then everyone's a monster." (Jay Besemer) "Cronk's writing is forensically spooky.... We are brought closer to Cronk's territory of occult sadomasochistic desire. _Womonster_ is both a hyper-abject soap opera of beige underwear, dusty crystal, sinks full of bloodied dishes, and a redemptive horror story about the power of becoming the monster." (Laura Ellen Joyce) "Olivia Cronk is one of my favorite US poets over the past 15 years. _Womonster_ is something like Lars Noren's Revolver rewritten with Ouija board." (Johannes Göransson)

Book Ladies Lazarus

Download or read book Ladies Lazarus written by Piper J. Daniels and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Essays. LGBTQIA Studies. Women's Studies. Longlisted for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. Equal parts séance, polemic, and love letter, Piper J. Daniels' LADIES LAZARUS examines evangelical upbringing, sexual trauma, queer identity, and mental illness with a raw intensity that moves between venom and grace. Fueled by wanderlust, Daniels travels the country, unearthing the voices of forgotten women. Girls and ghosts speak freely, murdered women serve as mentors, and those who've languished in unmarked graves convert their names to psalms. At every turn, Daniels invites the reader to engage, not in the soothing narrative of healing, but in the literal and metaphorical dynamism of death and resurrection. "Beautifully written collection of 11 lyric essays... [Daniels] emerges as an empowering and noteworthy voice."--Publishers Weekly "Piper J. Daniels is going to rip the essay world apart. LADIES LAZARUS is the best debut I've read in a long time. Daniels has resurrected the personal essay and what it is and what it can do."--Jenny Boully "An extremely intelligent, impressively understated, and achingly powerful work."--David Sheilds "A siren song from planet woman, a love letter from the body, a resistance narrative against the dark."--Lidia Yuknavitch

Book Descent

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lauren Russell
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-06-02
  • ISBN : 9781939460219
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Descent written by Lauren Russell and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. African & African American Studies. Women's Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. In 2013, poet Lauren Russell acquired a copy of the diary of her great-great-grandfather, Robert Wallace Hubert, a Captain in the Confederate Army. After his return from the Civil War, he fathered twenty children by three of his former slaves. One of those children was the poet's great-grandmother. Through several years of research, Russell would seek the words to fill the diary's omissions and to imagine the voice of her great-great-grandmother, Peggy Hubert, a black woman silenced by history. The result is a hybrid work of verse, prose, images and documents that traverses centuries as the past bleeds into the present. "In DESCENT, the very talented poet Lauren Russell shows us how to write what we do not know; to give with grace and dignity, humanity to names on the family tree. DESCENT is a search for truths felt in one's bones."--Brenda Coultas "An audacious, acid, lyrical re-membering that asks, what do we demand of the past, and what to do with its refusal? Russell's deep archive would not answer her back. With DESCENT, however, she speaks to us. Sit all the way down and listen up."--Douglas Kearney "Lauren Russell's stellar new book-length poem...portrays a rich, Black American ancestral record. Sifting nimbly through all manner of documentation and employing form in revelatory ways, Russell's poems are as much ascent into a present shaped by the past as descent from America's true heroic figures."--John Keene

Book The Red Bird

Download or read book The Red Bird written by Joyelle McSweeney and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the persistent, dappled vision of an ecstatic pragmatist, Joyelle McSweeney sees things as they are through "the modern knothole": "Up on the hill,/ a white tent had just got unsteadily to its feet/ like a foal or a just-foaled cathedral." Eventuality, as it is delicately shaded by the fine and fearless intelligence of these kinesthetic arrangements, coincides with imaginative possibility; the resulting poems are as much mind as place; much galaxy as time-inevitable and correct as only true whimsy can be. "Outside, the web of tenthousandthings;/ inside here, only three: filmstrip of a helicopter's shadow;/ against an Antarctic wall; silkscreen/ of the grand central ceiling. The idealized landscape-/ I want a room in it."

Book Entrance to a Colonial Pageant in which We All Begin to Intricate

Download or read book Entrance to a Colonial Pageant in which We All Begin to Intricate written by Johannes Göransson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Cross-Genre. Fiction. Drama. "It would take a miracle to perform this pageant. For a start, you would have to reanimate Charlotte Bronte, Adolf Loos, and Ronald Reagan, and you would need an ungodly amount of wax. Most of the action is obscene, and therefore takes place offstage. The actors enter and report on scenes of spectacular violence that go on all the time every day. The audience is part of the spectacle too. We are all transformed into images somewhere in this script. At one point, all of Hollywood appears onstage on the form of dead horses, perhaps because Hollywood film continues to rely on narrative conventions that it exhausted long ago. The entire world also appears, played by a boy who, in a series of rapid costume changes, puts on increasingly pretty dresses" Aaron Kunin."
