Book Agricultural Research for Sustainable Food Systems in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Agricultural Research for Sustainable Food Systems in Sri Lanka written by Buddhi Marambe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A food system comprises the entire range of actors and interlinked activities related to food production, processing, distribution, marketing and trade, preparation, consumption, and disposal. When a food system operates without compromising the needs of future generations, it is considered to be a “Sustainable Food System.” The present-day food systems in Sri Lanka are diverse, and the natural and physical environment, infrastructure, institutions, society and culture, and policies and regulations within which the food systems operate, as well as the technologies employed, have shaped their outcomes. Agricultural research is a key factor in terms of innovation and technological advances. Innovation has been the main driver of food systems’ transformation over the past few decades and will be critical to addressing the needs of a rapidly growing population in a context of climate change and scarcity of natural resources. In addition, agricultural research must help meet the rising demand for food at affordable prices. Comprising 17 chapters written by specialist(s) in their respective subject-areas, this Contributed Volume on “Agricultural Research for Sustainable Food Systems in Sri Lanka: A Historical Perspective” shares the scientific knowledge accumulated by the National Agricultural Research System of Sri Lanka, including universities, and offers recommendations on how to make food systems more sustainable in order to address the current needs of Sri Lankan society. It presents perspectives on four key thematic areas, namely: (i) Crop and animal production, management, and improvement, (ii) Agro-product processing technologies, (iii) Natural resource management, and (iv) Socio-economic development and agri-business management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the role of government policy in economic development in the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea has achieved economic success on many fronts. Real GNP has tripled every decade since the 1960s. A dynamic and flexible manufacturing sector now dominates the economy. The benefits of growth have been widely distributed, with a sharp decrease in poverty. This study, like others in the series, seeks to draw lessons from such success and to identify and analyze the policies behind this strong economic performance. Koreas development strategy and macroeconomic performance are outlined in Part I. Several factors are seen to underlie strong growth, including the maintenance of a stable macroenvironment, flexible and pragmatic policies, and investment in infrastructure and human capital. Part II assesses the role played by industrial policy since 1961. Particular attention is given to the Heavy and Chemical Industry (HCI) drive, launched in 1973 to diversify and upgrade Koreas industrial sector. The authors note that while the HCI has been largely successful, it also has been very costly, particularly to the financial sector. Part III outlines the role of institutions and the close relationships among the government, the bureaucracy, and business. The key to Koreas rapid development, according to the authors, was the governments commitment to growth and its early focus on equity and wide distribution of the gains from growth. The authors also laud the efficiency and effectiveness of Koreas public and private sector institutions, which they see as models for all developing nations.

Book Global Nutrition Report 2016

Download or read book Global Nutrition Report 2016 written by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few challenges facing the global community today match the scale of malnutrition, a condition that directly affects 1 in 3 people. Malnutrition manifests itself in many different ways: as poor child growth and development; as individuals who are skin and bone or prone to infection; as those who are carrying too much weight or whose blood contains too much sugar, salt, fat, or cholesterol; or those who are deficient in important vitamins or minerals. Malnutrition and diet are by far the biggest risk factors for the global burden of disease: every country is facing a serious public health challenge from malnutrition. The economic consequences represent losses of 11 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) every year in Africa and Asia, whereas preventing malnutrion delivers $16 in returns on investment for every $1 spent. The world’s countries have agreed on targets for nutrition, but despite some progress in recent years the world is off track to reach those targets. This third stocktaking of the state of the world’s nutrition points to ways to reverse this trend and end all forms of malnutrition by 2030.

Book Maternal Dietary and Lifestyle Patterns with Pregnancy Birth and Child Health Outcomes

Download or read book Maternal Dietary and Lifestyle Patterns with Pregnancy Birth and Child Health Outcomes written by Airu Chia and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, limited evidence suggests that maternal preconception and pregnancy dietary patterns are associated with reduced risks of adverse maternal and child health outcomes such as gestational diabetes mellitus and preterm birth. However, there are insufficient studies examining preconception and pregnancy dietary patterns on birth weight outcomes such as gestational-age birth weight for any conclusion to be made. Additionally, there is a relative paucity of studies investigating preconception, postpartum, and beyond postpartum dietary patterns. Recent research has advanced from examining each modifiable lifestyle factor singly (e.g. diet, physical activity, smoking) towards a holistic approach of examining multiple lifestyle factors using composite healthy lifestyle scores. Two large-scale mother-offspring cohorts in Ireland and the United States have shown that adherence to a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy and beyond pregnancy is associated with reduced risks of adverse offspring birth outcomes and childhood obesity. These findings are consistent with data obtained from cross-sectional studies based in China and Tanzania.
