Book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book Nutrition and the Elderly

Download or read book Nutrition and the Elderly written by Barbara E. Millen and published by Great Source Education Group. This book was released on 1979 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The nutritional needs of the elderly and federal programs designed to help meet these needs are discussed. Many factors affect the nutritional status of the elderly including economic, medical, and environmental conditions. Many of the elderly have insufficient incomes to fullfill their nutritional needs. Many have chronic illnesses affecting the intake and utilization of nutrients. Others are prohibited from obtaining help because of distance, ignorance or fear. Many elderly have protein and vitamin deficient diets, while ingesting large amounts of fat and carbohydrates. To correct these inequities, the Title VII Nutrition Program for the Aged was funded beginning in 1973. While the initial program was limited in scope, in 1975 it was expanded to more sites and served more of the elderly.

Book Aging and Health in Africa

Download or read book Aging and Health in Africa written by Pranitha Maharaj and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population aging is a matter of global concern. It often occurs in tandem with changes in the health profile of the population. In Africa, many countries are already facing a high burden of communicable diseases. However, as more and more children survive childhood and move on to adult years and old age they are also more likely to experience health problems associated with the aging process. Population aging in Africa is occurring in the context of high levels of poverty, changing family structures, an immense disease burden, fragile health systems and weak or poorly managed government institutions. This book shows that aging is likely to lead to increased social and economic demands for the continent. However, most national governments in Africa have not begun to address the issue of how to respond effectively to the needs of the older population. This will require a better understanding of the socio-economic and demographic situation of the older population in Africa. This book fills the gaps that exist by exploring the social realities of population aging in Africa. It also focuses on the policy and programmatic responses, gaps and future challenges related to aging across the continent.

Book Evolutionary Aspects of Nutrition and Health

Download or read book Evolutionary Aspects of Nutrition and Health written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues treated in this publication are brought together in this way for the first time. For many of the chronic diseases, familial predispositions are well established, and there is good evidence for true genetic predisposition. When Homo erectus emerged 1.7 million years ago, humans existed as non-cereal-eating hunter-gatherers. It is on this basis that, according to the hypothesis of the 'carnivore connection', an insulin-resistant genotype evolved to provide survival and reproductive advantages to populations adapted to a high meat, low plant food (low carbohydrate) nutritional environment. Cereal became the major source of calories and protein in the human diet only about 10,000 years ago. Humankind has thus had little evolutionary experience to adapt to this new food type, maladaption being the consequence. Moreover, studies comparing energy expenditure in Western societies and during the Paleolithic period indicate a low level of physical activity not previously encountered in human history, a state to which humans are not genetically adapted. Together with the dietary changes, this has led to a modern environment in which a number of individuals are prone to chronic diseases, causing increases in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer and obesity. As a consequence, the lifestyle approach for the prevention and management of these diseases is essential, varying with national dietary patterns and national economy. This publication will be of special interest to physicians, geneticists, nutritionists, dieticians, anthropologists, food technologists, food-policy-makers and individuals interested in personal and family health.
