Book Handbook of Nutrition and Diet in Leukemia and Blood Disease Therapy

Download or read book Handbook of Nutrition and Diet in Leukemia and Blood Disease Therapy written by Ronald Ross Watson and published by Brill Wageningen Academic. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides an overview of the latest science of the influence of nutrition on blood cells and blood diseases. Blood diseases include a broad range of nutritional deficiencies, leukemias and genetic mutations, associated with an increased risk of infections. Reduced red blood cell production can lead to nutritional diseases and anemias, requiring iron supplementation. Patients with anemia feel sick, fatigued and have nausea affecting food intake, worsening their condition. Changes in serum and blood cells affect coagulation, as well as the immune cells' production of cytokines and immunoglobulin. The blood cells interactions affect all major organ systems. Nutrition and food plays a key role in the health of blood cells and their functions. Vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E, C and iron, affect the production of blood cells and their proteins, including hemoglobin. In addition, other nutrients, like glutamine, L-carnitine and the amino-acid taurine, play a crucial role in the production of blood cells and blood/related diseases. This book discusses nutritional therapies concerning stem cell transplantation, iron deficiency, cardiovacular diseases, sickle cell anemia and sepsis patients, among others. Nutritional therapy and management in leukemia is given a major focus. The key goal of this handbook is to review some of the nutritional approaches for efficacy in treatment of blood diseases, reduction of their clinical complications and the improvement of the quality of life of these patients.

Book Diet and Nutrition for Leukemia

Download or read book Diet and Nutrition for Leukemia written by Tim Rozman and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leukemia represents a severe malignant condition impacting a person's hematopoietic tissues and blood cells. This disease necessitates treatment due to its debilitating effects on the body. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in managing leukemia, helping to mitigate the adverse effects of chemotherapy and facilitating recovery. Dietary recommendations for individuals with leukemia emphasize the consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, resembling the diet of a healthy individual. While patients with leukemia often receive prescribed vitamins and nutritional supplements to bolster immunity, especially post-chemotherapy, these supplements cannot fully substitute a nutritious and balanced diet recommended for leukemia patients. Therefore, adherence to proper nutrition and dietary guidelines specific to leukemia patients is essential until complete recovery.

Generally, leukemia refers to cancers of the WBCs.WBCs are a vital part of your immune system. They protect your body from invasion by bacteria, viruses, and fungi, as well as from abnormal cells and other foreign substances. In leukemia, the WBCs don't function like normal WBCs. They can also divide too quickly and eventually crowd out normal cells.WBCs are mostly produced in the bone marrow, but certain types of WBCs are also made in the lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus gland. Book Examining Access to Nutrition Care in Outpatient Cancer Centers

Download or read book Examining Access to Nutrition Care in Outpatient Cancer Centers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 90 percent of oncology patients in the United States receive treatment in outpatient cancer centers and clinics. This change from the older model of inpatient care has important implications for overall quality of care for oncology patients and nutritional care in particular. Amidst growing concern about access to oncology nutrition services, combined with growing recognition of the importance of providing nutritional care to optimize oncology treatment outcomes and maximize quality of life among both patients and survivors of cancer, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop in March 2016 to explore evolving interactions between nutritional care, cancer, and health outcomes. Participants explored how health outcomes and survival of cancer patients in outpatient cancer centers are affected by current standards for nutritional services, nutritional interventions, and benefits associated with oncology patient access to medical nutrition therapy. They also studied the cost of outpatient nutritional care and assessed costâ€"benefit relationships between oncology nutrition services and health outcomes and survival. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
