Book Remote Sensing Based Analysis of Land Cover and Land Cover Change in Central Sulawesi Indonesia

Download or read book Remote Sensing Based Analysis of Land Cover and Land Cover Change in Central Sulawesi Indonesia written by Christian Knieper and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical rain forests are the most complex, varied, and species-rich terrestrial ecosystems on earth. However, these unique forests are more and more threatened by human activities. About half of the originally forested area has been deforested in the past decades and the pressure on today’s remaining rain forests is still growing. The German-Indonesian research project STORMA (“Stability of Rainforest Margins in Indonesia”) analyses the causes, circumstances, and consequences of rain forest conversion. In its survey area in Central Sulawesi (Indonesia), vast areas of intact rain forest still exist but are currently facing increasing exploitation by the rural population. Especially the expansion of cultivation area for cocoa and maize represents a major threat for local rain forests.Remote sensing plays an important role in the examination of rain forest loss, because it allows the regionalisation and quantification of spatial developments at different scales. In his book, Christian Knieper gains information about land cover and land cover change in Central Sulawesi on the basis of a Landsat 7/ETM+ time series. He applies a modern object-oriented approach which allows the analysis of non-spectral features (e.g. shape, spatial relations, thematic data) and goes beyond the pure isolated statistical examination of each pixel’s spectral values offered by traditional remote sensing techniques. The gathered results on land cover change provide essential information for socio-economic as well as ecological research activities within STORMA.

Book A Matter of Mutual Survival

Download or read book A Matter of Mutual Survival written by Günter Burkard and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2008 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of articles based on empirical social science research in forest margin communities around the Lore Lindu National Park in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. It refers to a worldwide and particularly topical issue, i.e. the declining forest resources and man's role in the observed processes of nature degradation. However, it refrains from rather simplistic protectionist approaches which boil down to a separation between man and nature in order to avoid the depletion of natural resources. Instead, the approach adopted regards the existence or development of co-evolutionary potentials, both in nature and human society, as a precondition for the establishment of a sustainable equilibrium in the interaction between man and nature.

Book Land and Longhouse

Download or read book Land and Longhouse written by Rob A. Cramb and published by NIAS Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land and Longhouse examines the role of community, market, and state in the historic transformation of upland livelihoods in Southeast Asia. Focusing on the Saribas Iban of Sarawak, the book combines in-depth, generation-long village case studies with an account of changes in land use and tenure at the regional level spanning a century and a half. This analysis demonstrates that, far from being passive victims of globalization, the Iban have been active agents in their own transformation, engaging with both market and state while retaining community values and governance. R. A. Cramb makes a significant new contribution to debates about economic, social, and environmental change and conflict in upland Southeast Asia. His book offers a fascinating, empirically rich account of interest to scholars, development practitioners, and the general reader alike. "This study is certain to become a major reference point for future work on land use, tenure, and agrarian change in Upland Southeast Asia." --Clifford Sather, University of Helsinki "Rob Cramb has written an excellent book with a much needed longitudinal perspective on agrarian change. The book is an important contribution to the urgent need for understanding the dynamics and consequences--both environmental and social--of upland transformation in Southeast Asia." --Ole Mertz, University of Copenhagen "Rob Cramb's study raises provocative questions about Iban society, the nature of the Southeast Asia uplands, and agrarian history. He presents a work distinguished by the depth of its scholarship and the breadth of the questions addressed by it." --Michael R. Dove, Yale University

Book Opportunities for implementing REDD to enhance sustainable forest management and improve livelihoods in Lombok NTB Indonesia

Download or read book Opportunities for implementing REDD to enhance sustainable forest management and improve livelihoods in Lombok NTB Indonesia written by Jae Soo Bae and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores opportunities for implementing activities for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in areas with high poverty rates, rapid population growth and complex social dynamics. We focus on the potential role of localized Forest Management Units (or KPH) as an institutional partner, using the West Rinjani Protected Forest Management Unit (KPHL RB) on the island of Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat province, Indonesia as a case study. We relied on five essential elements for our analysis: (1) identification of land use changes, (2) estimation of average carbon stocks in forests and shrubland, (3) socioeconomic surveys to identify drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, (4) estimation of future reference emission levels, and (5) developing alternatives to reduce the rates of deforestation and forest degradation.

Book Utilizing international land use regimes to shape domestic forest policies in Indonesia

Download or read book Utilizing international land use regimes to shape domestic forest policies in Indonesia written by Muhammad Alif Kaimuddin Sahide and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being organized into five chapters, this research detects the utilization of global and regional land use regimes by national bureaucracies. This research identifies domestic political background on utilizing international regimes within specific Indonesian land use change settings, a topic which has to date been neglected in this research field, with a few exceptions. Subsequently, the research poses several sub-questions to break down the main research question, which are as follows: 1. What are the bureaucracies and their tasks as well as their legal options to pursue actual and potential interests in steering land use transformation systems in Indonesia? 2. How did the domestic bureaucracy, together with international actors, use and adapt national instruments and international support to pursue their own (international and domestic) interests in several cases of land use transformation in Indonesia, such as (a) certification of palm oil and (b) Forest Management Units (FMU) and community forestry (CF)? 3. How did the domestic bureaucracy utilize the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) regional forest and environmental regime complex? 4. How is the relevance of international and regional regimes used in domestic bureaucratic politics?
