Book excerpt: Trends and skills for those who offer pastoral care Christian pastoral care has changed a great deal in the past few decades in response to many factors in our rapidly changing world. In part 1 of Nurturing Hope, Lynne Baab discusses seven trends in pastoral care--shifts in who delivers pastoral care, the attitudes and commitments that undergird pastoral care, and societal trends that are shaping pastoral care today. She illustrates them with stories from diverse congregations where Christian caregivers are meeting those challenges in creative and exciting ways. In the second half of the book, Baab presents four practical, doable, energizing skills needed by pastoral carers in our time. Focusing on skills that help carers nurture connections between everyday life and Christian faith, she explores the need for carers to understand common stressors, listen, pray with others, and nurture their personal resilience. Grounded in an understanding of God as the true caregiver and healer, the author offers tips for readers who are training other pastoral carers or developing their own understanding and skills. Each chapter ends with discussion and reflection questions, making the book helpful for groups. Lynne Baab brings readers hope for their caring role and for their own spiritual journey.

Book Women Wise Optimistic Motivating Empowering Nurturing

Download or read book Women Wise Optimistic Motivating Empowering Nurturing written by Letlhokwa George Mpedi and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s Day, celebrated annually on the 9th of August, commemorates the 1956 women’s march against the discriminatory pass laws during the apartheid era. It was on this day that women from across the nation were led by Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn to the Union Buildings to protest against the oppressive pass laws. As SA History describes it, “The 1956 Women’s March played a vital role in women becoming more visible participants in the anti-apartheid struggle.” That is not to say that women were not already playing an instrumental role in the struggle. But as history has long demonstrated, this is often a forgotten aspect of our narrative. This unfortunate omission underscores the importance of reclaiming and preserving these stories, weaving them into the broader narrative of societal progress. As we reflect on their fight and the impact of their war cry, “wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo, uza kufa” which translates to “when you strike the women, you strike a rock, you will be crushed you will die”, we are given pause to reflect on the progress made in the fight for equality since then. We now live in a democratic society where many of our aspirations have been realised. Yet, there is much we have not managed to achieve. To say that South Africa has achieved equality would be a fallacy. A grim reality is that in many aspects we have failed women. Pay parity, underrepresentation in industries, unequal access to opportunities, disturbing levels of violence, sexism and misogyny persist unabated. These issues cast a long shadow over our aspirations as a nation. This book aims to shed light on these issues while honouring the progress made and highlighting the road ahead.

Book State of Empowerment

Download or read book State of Empowerment written by Carolyn Barnes and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On weekday afternoons, dismissal bells signal not just the end of the school day but also the beginning of another important activity: the federally funded after-school programs that offer tutoring, homework help, and basic supervision to millions of American children. Nearly one in four low-income families enroll a child in an after-school program. Beyond sharpening students’ math and reading skills, these programs also have a profound impact on parents. In a surprising turn—especially given the long history of social policies that leave recipients feeling policed, distrusted, and alienated—government-funded after-school programs have quietly become powerful forces for political and civic engagement by shifting power away from bureaucrats and putting it back into the hands of parents. In State of Empowerment Carolyn Barnes uses ethnographic accounts of three organizations to reveal how interacting with government-funded after-school programs can enhance the civic and political lives of low-income citizens.

Book Teacher Empowerment and Cultural Context

Download or read book Teacher Empowerment and Cultural Context written by Shanthi Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher empowerment is a psychological and socio-structural motivational process that enhances teacher performance and self-expression. The current conceptualisations of Teacher Empowerment, available in extant literature, have been constructed in an Anglo-Saxon, western cultural context. There have been attempts to transfer the concept to Asian countries, but these attempts were faced with major obstacles since the underlying cultural assumptions are not the same across countries. This book treads new ground by redefining Teacher Empowerment in the cultural context of South East Asia. Using the case of Brunei Darussalam which has a unique socio-cultural make-up as a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and other Asian cultures, the book offers a unique insight how the Teacher Empowerment dynamics is played out in this context. Covering more than just empowering leadership in schools, the author explores how colleagues, parents, and students empower teachers, and how teachers empower themselves. This book is a valuable guide for educators and educational leaders and researchers in Southeast Asia and beyond, who are committed to the empowerment of teachers, and the qualitative enhancement of the field of education as a whole.

Book Nurturing An Endangered Generation

Download or read book Nurturing An Endangered Generation written by Rosemary Thompson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statistics are pretty grim - the young people of the US face an ever increasing tide of poverty, alcohol, and drug abuse, violence, suicide, and family dysfunction. However, society's response has been slow. Too many young people do not receive consistent, positive, and realistic validation of themselves from the adults on whom they depend. The problems facing today's youth demonstrate the critical need for responsible adults to establish close, helping relationships with our young people. This means not only helping them achieve academically, but also teaching them skills such as assertiveness, decision making, conflict resolution, impulse control, anger management, empathy, sensitivity, and tolerance of difference. This book goes beyond the stilted rhetoric on the problems of youth and the dilemma for society by outlining specific treatment intervention and prevention strategies that address the full spectrum of dysfunctional behavior. It introduces structured intervention strategies for school and community collaboration, with an emphasis on remediation and treatment. Educators and helping professionals will find counseling strategies and psychoeducational techniques that focus on primary prevention. These primary prevention strategies are supported by an understanding of critical social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Each chapter introduces the latest demographic data and the factors that make children and adolescents vulnerable to self-defeating or self-destructive behaviors, and then counteracts these factors with structured intervention and prevention

Book Empowering People with Severe Mental Illness

Download or read book Empowering People with Severe Mental Illness written by Donald M. Linhorst and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of empowerment has become increasingly popular with mental health professionals. But while it is a frequently cited goal in the helping professions, empowerment is often nothing more than a buzzword that lacks specificity and grounding in real-world applications. Consequently, little practical guidance exists demonstrating how to achieve it in specific instances with specific groups of people. This book is the first professional guide that operationalizes the theory of empowerment, outlines the conditions under which it is likely to occur, and applies a practical model for working with people with severe mental illness. In this unique and thoroughly researched volume, Donald Linhorst analyzes the conditions that facilitate empowerment and provides the framework necessary to bolster this historically powerless population's access to the material and cultural resources they need to regain control of their lives. Chapters illustrate how to foster empowerment in treatment planning, housing selection, organizational decision making, mental health service planning and policy making, employment, participation in research and evaluation, and consumer provision of mental health and support services. Case studies from a public psychiatric hospital and a community mental health agency illustrate each of the seven areas and present evidence of the model's efficacy. Finally, the book maps out the roles that service providers, administrators, policy makers, advocacy groups, researchers, and clients can play in the empowerment process. Checklists, step-by-step instructions, historical overviews, and vivid examples make this a valuable teaching tool, planning guide, and everyday reference for mental health professionals seeking an innovative and evidence-based approach to working with their clients with severe mental illness.
