Book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients

Download or read book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients written by A'kya Adams (R.N) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a debilitating disease that causes both physical and psychological effects, which in turn may result in poor quality of life. Since 2016, more than 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with cancer, and with improvement in treatment modalities, the number of individuals surviving cancer and cancer treatment is expected to grow (American Cancer Society, 2018a). Research examining alternative treatments such as music therapy has been reported to help alleviate pain in cancer patients. However, there is limited research focusing on the use of music therapy as a treatment modality for the psychosocial side effects of cancer such as anxiety and depression of cancer. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the effects of music interventions on individuals who are experiencing cancer-related psychosocial symptoms and their quality of life. -- from the abstract.

Book Music Therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Download or read book Music Therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit written by Miranda Bray and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This integrative literature review investigated, synthesized, and analysed research relating to caregiver empowerment in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) music interventions. As many as 70% of mothers and 30% of fathers face mental health disruptions in the NICU. Because of this, there is an identified need to address parental health and wellbeing in the NICU. Literature on empowering parents in the NICU and its potential positive implications on their wellbeing have been examined in other disciplines but have yet to be explored in the context of music therapy. In this study, 28 articles including 27 peer-reviewed journals and one book chapter were examined and coded based on intervention and themes of empowerment. The review explored four facets of empowerment including self-regulation, sensitivity, engagement, and nurturing strengths and potentials. It uncovered that: (a) empowerment can come from a wide variety of music therapy interventions, (b) the most commonly addressed theme of empowerment was self-regulation, followed by nurturing of strengths and potentials, engagement, and sensitivity, and (c) when an article used the word empowerment it always contained at minimum two facets of empowerment. Of the 28 qualifying articles included in this study, 3 (10.7%) included no empowerment themes, 8 (28.6%) included only one theme of empowerment, 8 (28.6%) included two themes of empowerment, 5 (17.9%) included 3 themes of empowerment, and 4 (14.3%) included all four themes of empowerment. These results indicate that further research is needed to investigate the impact, application, and role of empowerment in NICU music therapy with caregivers. Future research and recommendations are presented.

Download or read book The Music between Us written by Kathleen Marie Higgins and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Higgins’ love of music and cultural variety is evident throughout. She writes in a relaxed, accessible, sophisticated style…Highly recommended.”—Choice From our first social bonding as infants to the funeral rites that mark our passing, music plays an important role in our lives, bringing us closer to one another. In this book, philosopher Kathleen Marie Higgins investigates this role, examining the features of human perception that enable music’s uncanny ability to provoke—despite its myriad forms across continents and throughout centuries—the sense of a shared human experience. Drawing on disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, musicology, linguistics, and anthropology, Higgins’s richly researched study showcases the ways music is used in rituals, education, work, and healing, and as a source of security and—perhaps most importantly—joy. By participating so integrally in such meaningful facets of society, Higgins argues, music situates itself as one of the most fundamental bridges between people, a truly cross-cultural form of communication that can create solidarity across political divides. Moving beyond the well-worn takes on music’s universality, The Music between Us provides a new understanding of what it means to be musical and, in turn, human. “Those who, like Higgins, deeply love music, actually know something about it, have open minds and ears, and are willing to look beyond the confines of Western aesthetics…will find much to learn in The Music between Us.”—Journalof Aesthetics and Art Criticism

Book A Step by Step Guide to Conducting an Integrative Review

Download or read book A Step by Step Guide to Conducting an Integrative Review written by Coleen E. Toronto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides guidance to readers for how to conduct an integrative review. Over the decades, with the expansion of evidence-based practice (EBP), the evolution of methods used in reviews has resulted in a wide spectrum of review types. Due to the overlapping characteristics of the various review methods, confusion exists related to terminology, descriptions and methods of each type. To fill this gap, this book examines components necessary to conduct a rigorous integrative review from formulating questions through dissemination of the results of the review. Each chapter focuses on one component or step in this process and is written in a straightforward and readable manner. An integrative review is considered by many as an actual research study, hence it should be approached following established research methods involving well‐defined steps. The integrative review is often compared with the systematic review. Both are used in healthcare research and follow a systematic process in reviewing literature and developing recommendations, but there are important differences that are addressed in the book. Evidence-based practice (EBP) demands high quality, rigorous evidence for nurse clinicians to make informed decisions with and for their patients. In nursing education, the integrative review is a frequent capstone project for graduate students and forms the basis for many doctoral projects. The Integrative review process should be valid, reliable and transparent and this book provides clear guidelines for writing an integrative review for students, educators, clinicians, and researchers. This book is a useful addition to courses for both undergraduate and graduate level writers of integrative reviews. In academia, a likely adoption would be in graduate research and research methods courses, and baccalaureate honor courses.

Book Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing

Download or read book Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing written by Rozzano C. Locsin and published by Nursing Knowledge International. This book was released on 2005 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurses use and encounter technology in nearly every aspect of their profession. What does it mean to be technologically competent and caring as a nurse? How does technology support nursing work? How does it hinder nursing work? How can nurses care for their patients as technological advancements are introduced nearly every day? Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing: A Model for Practice provides insight and answers into how nurses can and must be both technologically competent and caring as they provide meaningful and essential nursing care. Locsins work is obviously guided by the question asked by thoughtful nurses everywhere: How can I satisfactorily reconcile the idea of competent use of technology with the idea of caring in nursing? The chapters in this book significantly embellish a practical understanding of the solution offered by the Locsin model, and indeed, enrich the practical value of all of the general theories of nursing that are grounded in caring. Savina O. Schoenhofer, RN, PhD Professor, Department of Graduate Nursing Alcorn State University, Natchez, Mississippi, USA, Technological competency as caring in nursing is a critical process of knowing persons wholeness. Dr. Locsins book explores, clarifies, and advances the conception of technological competency as caring in nursing. His book is essential to modeling a practice of nursing from the perspective of caring in nursing and a practical illumination of excellent nursing in a technological world.
