Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to the call Your Country Needs You, cadet nurses became the largest and youngest group of uniformed women to serve their country in uniform during World War II. The Corps program was established primarily to expand the quantity of nursing service personnel during a critical nurse shortage. Thanks to federal funding, nursing leaders took advantage of the opportunity to improve nursing education. Wearing the scarlet and grey uniform also gave cadets the confidence to speak out regarding an authoritative nurse training system prevalent in the 1940’s. This book gives a better understanding as to the advances made in nursing education during the past half century.

Download or read book Ila s War written by Cindy Entriken and published by Cindy Entriken. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ila's War is the true story of the first 30 years of Ila Armsbury's life. Hers is the story of an ordinary Kansan-an "every woman"-who aspired for more than the traditional roles of wife and mother. The book is set in the 1920s through the 1940s. Some of Ila's stories are frightening while others are humorous or heart-breaking. But they're all true and inspirational because they show a young woman determined to take control of her own life to achieve her goals: education, service, travel, and a family. Ila's stories include a confrontation with the Ku Klux Klan in Lincoln, Kansas; the arrest of her father on a charge of white slavery in Russell County; the havoc of dust storms during the Dirty 30s; and the crippling of five Lincoln men, part of a group of 50,000 Americans who drank adulterated Jamaica Ginger. Another story about working as an obstetrics nurse in the Kansas City, Kansas, slums in the late 1930s demonstrates some of the changes in medical practice over the last several decades. In addition to detailed and colorful stories of Kansas history, Ila's War tells of her experiences as a US Army nurse with the 155th Station Hospital at Camp Cable, Australia; about the horrors of battle on New Guinea; how Camp Cable was overwhelmed when more than 2,000 US Marines-all sick with malaria-were evacuated from Guadalcanal just before Christmas 1942; about Ila's successful fight with an Army Board of Disposition to stay in the Army Nurse Corps; and about Ila's struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder after the war. While some readers may see Ila's War as a coming-of-age tale, its real power lies in her triumph over the adversities of poverty, prejudice, betrayal, and war. Ila represents strong Kansas women, and she will serve as a role model for all of us living through difficult times.

Book Nursing Shifts in Sichuan

Download or read book Nursing Shifts in Sichuan written by Sonya Grypma and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) was forced to evacuate to the Canadian West China Mission in Chengdu, Sichuan. As part of an extraordinary mass migration to Free China during the Japanese occupation, the refugee PUMC transformed nursing at the Canadian mission, initiating the second university nursing program in the country. Both programs were closed by the new Communist government in 1951, and degree programs lay dormant in China for the next thirty-five years. Nursing Shifts in Sichuan offers both a cautionary tale about the fragility of transnational relations and a testament to the resilience of educated women.

Book Paradox of Professionalism American Nurses in World War II

Download or read book Paradox of Professionalism American Nurses in World War II written by Marsha L. Burris and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, nursing leadership used their wartime contributions to advance their professional interests. Nursing leaders directed the rank and file nurses in a war whose commanders demanded excellence in terms of skills and abilities while perpetuating regulations that restricted much of the efforts of recruitment and performance. Ex service nurses returned to the civilian work force confident in their abilities and ready to confront the causes of unfair working conditions under which they worked before the war. In adhering to the nineteenth century model of the well disciplined, self sacrificing and dutiful caretaker, however, organized nursing was unable to break the century long traditions that placed it in an inferior position in medicine, thus the field of nursing improved their circumstances only in areas over which they controlled such as education and licensing.

Book One hundred years of wartime nursing practices 1854 1953

Download or read book One hundred years of wartime nursing practices 1854 1953 written by Jane Brooks and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the work that nurses of many differing nations undertook during the Crimean War, the Boer War, the Spanish Civil War, both World Wars and the Korean War. It makes an excellent and timely contribution to the growing discipline of nursing wartime work. In its exploration of multiple nursing roles during the wars, it considers the responsiveness of nursing work, as crisis scenarios gave rise to improvisation and the – sometimes quite dramatic – breaking of practice boundaries. The originality of the text lies not only in the breadth of wartime practices considered, but also the international scope of both the contributors and the nurses they consider. It will therefore appeal to academics and students in the history of nursing and war, nursing work and the history of medicine and war from across the globe.
