Book Factors Contributing to the Decision to Participate Or Not Participate in a Clinical Ladder Program

Download or read book Factors Contributing to the Decision to Participate Or Not Participate in a Clinical Ladder Program written by Kathy L. Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Ladder programs have documented benefits for both participants and healthcare organizations. These benefits include: (a) retention and recruitment, (b) increased job satisfaction, (c) autonomy, and (d) positive impact on quality of patient care. The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to gain a better understanding of factors that influence decision making of nurses to participate or not participate in a Clinical Ladder program. Expectancy theory is a process motivational theory, which was used as the conceptual framework to help identify factors influencing decision-making. In this quantitative study, the researcher used a Likert scale survey tool to measure (a) demographic information, (b) perceived barriers, and (c) internal and external motivational factors. Two different survey tools specific to whether nurses have participated or not in the Clinical Ladder program were used to gather data. The surveys were distributed to a convenience sample of nurses throughout a 650 bed midwestern hospital with an existing Clinical Ladder program. The results demonstrated that the subjects who had never participated in the Clinical Ladder program were motivated by extrinsic factors, specifically monetary compensation. Clinical Ladder participants were motivated more by intrinsic motivational factors. Overall, Clinical Ladder programs demonstrate positive benefits, in not only professional growth, autonomy, positively impacting practice and job satisfaction. It is necessary for nursing leaders to support Clinical Ladder programs to achieve maximum enrollment in the program. These study results have potential to achieve increased Clinical Ladder program participation.

Book The Healthcare Practitioner s Handbook of Management

Download or read book The Healthcare Practitioner s Handbook of Management written by Larry D. Grieshaber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-06-19 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American system of healthcare is rapidly changing. Today, more and more of an emphasis is being placed on management skills-organizing, coordinating and managing the resources required for providing quality patient care. Medical practitioners are now expected to be efficient administrators as well as skilled clinicians. Although some may see this as a difficult hurdle, The Healthcare Practitioner's Handbook of Management shows that many healthcare providers are already well-prepared to perform management roles effectively. Through their education and clinical experience, most clinicians now have the problem-solving skills required for management - it's simply a matter of applying these skills to a different arena. In keeping with this idea, each chapter of The Healthcare Practitioner's Handbook of Management links a management topic to a clinical analogy and presents diagnostic and treatment approaches to the issue at hand. In addition, the book introduces the healthcare professional to the vocabulary and basic theories of management and shows how to transform clinical skills into managerial skills. In today's complex health care environment, these management skills are not just helpful, but essential.
