Book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes and Beliefs about Sexual Activity Among Older Adults

Download or read book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes and Beliefs about Sexual Activity Among Older Adults written by Valerie Mena and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the attitudes and beliefs about older adults' sexual activity among various nurse practitioner specialties. The data were obtained from two California Association of Nurse Practitioners chapter general meetings. Twenty-seven nurse practitioners participated in answering the demographic data sheet and the modified Sexual Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS). The study compared family nurse practitioners (n = 19) to other nurse practitioner specialties (n = 8). The findings showed no significant difference in the total and individual SABS scores, but the nurse practitioners reported that they believed that older adult patients did not expect nurse practitioners to ask about their sexual concerns. Implications of the study for practice and for further research were included.

Book Sexuality and the Elderly

Download or read book Sexuality and the Elderly written by Bonnie L. Walker and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1997-05-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review was undertaken in order to determine what caregivers needed to know about elderly sexuality, to determine the needs of elderly people related to their sexuality, and to determine how caregivers could best assist them in meeting those needs. In selecting materials to be annotated for this book, the first priority was given to empirical studies. Also included were articles by prominent practitioners and researchers interested in elderly sexuality, literature reviews, and books written for the lay population which are often cited in the professional literature. In addition to seeking knowledge about elderly sexuality and understanding attitudes about sexuality, this literature review sought information about measurement issues and measurement instruments frequently used in research within elderly populations. Also of interest were investigations of educational and training programs involving caregivers.

Book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs Among Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives Who Work with Adolescents in Non acute Care Settings

Download or read book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs Among Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives Who Work with Adolescents in Non acute Care Settings written by Julia Irene Minoia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents frequently experience perceived and actual barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare related to confidentiality, access, and their relationship with healthcare providers. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are well positioned to work with adolescents in a variety of non-acute care settings to provide preventative sexual healthcare services. No studies have recorded Nurse Practitioners' (NPs) and Certified Nurse Midwives'/Certified Midwives' (CNMs/CMs) adolescent sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were any differences between Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs) and CNMs/CMs whose educational programs have a concentration in sexuality, and APRNs from other specialties (ANPs, FNPs, PNPs, and PMHNPs) regarding knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward adolescents' sexual health. The study used a cross-sectional, descriptive comparative design. A convenience sample was recruited through the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) and the Nurse Practitioner Association- New York State (NPA) e-newsletters and surveyed online with The Sex Knowledge Attitude Test (SKAT), the Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS), and the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS) to assess sexual health knowledge, sexuality attitudes, beliefs about addressing adolescent's sexual health, and personal experience of sexual violence. One open ended question elicited responses of qualitative data. Demographic data of participants (n = 204) were analysed and 171 participants finished the online survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis shows that the WHNP/CNM/CM group have significantly more positive beliefs about addressing adolescents' sexual health than the Other NPs group, [beta] = -3.36, p = .003. Chi-square of attitude scores by region of the U.S. show that positive attitudes toward adolescent sexuality vary significantly with the South showing the least positive attitude scores (p

Book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes Toward the Elderly

Download or read book Nurse Practitioners Attitudes Toward the Elderly written by Iselda Gentry and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nurse's attitudes toward the elderly have been shown to influence the care of this population of patients (Treharne, 1990) and those formed attitudes may be a result of such factors as age, gender, ethnicity and years of experience (Gallagher, Bennett & Halford, 2006). At the time of this proposal, there have been no studies examining the relationship between nurse practitioners' (NP) attitudes toward the elderly and NPs' demographic variables. Thus, additional research is needed to examine the nurse's attitudes toward the elderly.

Book excerpt: Healthcare provider practices around older adult sexuality are increasingly the focus of scholarship. Researchers use available scales to study health worker knowledge and behavior in their research. This dissertation argues the need for a new scale, because the available measures are dated and do not account for changes in attitudes and medical advances over three decades. After a review of the increasing role of physicians, social workers, and other health workers providing care for sexual issues throughout history, I describe available scales for measuring knowledge and behaviors about older adult sexuality and review research that employs them. The purpose of the dissertation was to develop a contemporary measure regarding older adult sexuality practices among health workers. I utilized a two-phase plan following Bowen and Guo's 12-step mixed-method approach for scale development (2012). Phase I included a literature review and qualitative interviews with experts on older adult sexuality regarding the construct. Then I created a universe of items, reviewed them with the experts, and revised items. In Phase II, I tested the items with 155 healthcare providers and conducted analysis for reliability and validity. Based on the analysis, I culled items to create a shortened scale. I proposed a scale consisting of 52 items with three subscales: a 25-item Knowledge subscale, a 13-item Attitude subscale, and a 14-item Behavior subscale. The Knowledge subscale showed poor internal reliability (KR-20 = .625). The Attitudes (alpha = .825), and Behavior (alpha = .837) subscales showed good internal reliability. I also evaluated content validity and criterion-related validity for the subscales. Flaws in the methods and analysis make the 52-item proposed scale conceptually unsound. Limitations in generating the pool of items, evaluating the items, and testing reliability and validity did not produce a viable scale. I analyze problems with the methodological approach and propose a redesign that corrects for flaws in the approach employed here. I will use an inductive, social justice model that expands scale development to include interviews with practitioners and older adults. I conclude with a number of research, practice, and policy implications that will result from a redesigned scale.

Download or read book Sexuality Ageing written by Walter Pierre Bouman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the globe, both in developed and developing countries, the population is rapidly ageing. In the fields of sexual and relationship therapy and sexual health, ageing has not been an issue of priority. Too often, ageing is thought of as a process that relates to problems, deficits, and taboos, and less to pleasure, change, growth and diversity. It is treated as a separate life stage and not a process throughout the lifecycle. Sexuality and sexual health are important parts of the lives of older people, as they have a significant impact on quality of life, psychological well-being and physical health, as well as social and family life. This book brings together contributions from those currently writing on and researching ageing as it relates, in a therapeutic context, to gender identity, to sex and sexuality, and to intimate relationships. This book was originally published as a special issue of Sexual and Relationship Therapy.
