Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship that exists between the degree of support systems (education, experience, attendance at a management course and availability of a mentor) and stress level experienced by first line nurse managers. Betty Neuman's Health Care Systems Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. Twenty eight nursing care coordinators from a community voluntary teaching hospital participated in this study. Data obtained from the Job-Related Tension Index and Support System questionnaires were analyzed using the Pearson r Correlation test and the Mann-Whitney p test. Statistical analysis using the Pearson r did not demonstrate a significant relationship between the level of stress and the degree of support systems including education, experience and attendance at a management course. Mentorship was considered separately. A Mann Whitney p test was done to examine the relationship between the level of stress and the availability of a mentor.
