Book NURE Geochemical Investigations in the Eastern United States

Download or read book NURE Geochemical Investigations in the Eastern United States written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) is conducting a hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance of the eastern United States as part of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program of the United States Department of Energy (DOE). Stream samples are collected at a density of one per 13 square kilometers in crystalline rock areas and 25 square kilometers in sedimentary rock areas. Stream sediment ( -40 mesh) is taken at each site, and stream water is concentrated on ion exchange resin in some areas. Ground water samples are collected at an average density of about one site per 20 square kilometers. Measurements made at each site include alkalinity, pH, and conductivity of water. Measurements of the radon and helium contents of ground water samples were made on a semiregional scale in pilot studies. Samples are analyzed at SRL by neutron activation techniques. Concentrations of uranium and about 20 other elements are determined in concentrated water samples. Results from several orientation studies are discussed including a Triassic Basin area near Sanford, North Carolina; the North and South Carolina Coastal Plain; and from reconnaissance studies in the Carolinas-Virginia Piedmont and Blue Ridge areas. In the Sanford Triassic Basin area, uranium content averaged 0.035 ppB in ground water from the organic-rich Cumnock formation and 1.8 ppB in the arkosic Pekin formation. Tuffaceous metavolcanics in the adjacent Carolina Slate Belt yielded water averaging about 0.1 ppB U. Studies in the Carolina Piedmont and Coastal Plain include helium, He/Ne and radon determinations in ground water. Background helium contents average about 5 ppM;anomalous samples range up to over twenty times background. During the next several years, an extensive data base will be established and published for elemental concentrations in stream sediment and surface and ground waters over much of the United States.

Book National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program NURE

Download or read book National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program NURE written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A geochemical reconnaissance of twenty-five eastern states for uranium will be conducted by the Savannah River Laboratory for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration. A sound technical basis for the reconnaissance is being developed by intensive studies of sampling, analysis, and data management. Results of three orientation studies in the southern Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge areas indicate that multi-element analysis of -100 mesh (less than 149 .mu.m) stream sediments will provide adequate information for reconnaissance. Stream and groundwater samples also provide useful information but are not considered cost-effective for regional reconnaissance in the areas studied.

Download or read book Drainage Geochemistry written by M. Hale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The considerable exploration success achieved by geochemistry over the last several decades - and still continuing - has provided both the basis and rationale for the Handbook of Exploration Geochemistry series, including Volume 6, Drainage Geochemistry in Mineral Exploration. With contributions from 25 experts of truly global professional experience in drainage geochemistry, this book is a thorough appraisal of the state of the art in the use of surface and sub-surface waters, stream and lake sediments, heavy minerals for mineral exploration in tropical rain forests, temperate glaciated terrains, mountain chains, arid deserts and regions of agricultural and industrial pollution. Additional attention is given to gold and uranium exploration, and to the growing role of drainage geochemistry as a multi-purpose environmental mapping technique with applications in human health studies, ore deposit modelling and pollution monitoring. It comprises 16 chapters, more than 250 figures and a bibliography of some 1600 references. This book is the most extensive and detailed single work on the principles and applications of drainage geochemistry in mineral exploration blending both theoretical considerations and practical implementations.

Book Statistics and Data Analysis in Geochemical Prospecting

Download or read book Statistics and Data Analysis in Geochemical Prospecting written by R.J. Howarth and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Exploration Geochemistry, Volume 2: Statistics and Data Analysis in Geochemical Prospecting aims to survey the techniques available for the quality control of laboratory data, storage and retrieval of field and laboratory information, statistical analysis of single- and multi-element data, and presentation of geochemical data as maps. The selection first elaborates on data storage and retrieval, control procedures in geochemical analysis, and univariate analysis. Discussions focus on analysis of variance, density distribution, probability graphs, statistical basis of analytical quality control, laboratory control procedures, data storage media, data organization, programming considerations, and generalized data systems. The book then takes a look at sampling methodology, mapping, and multivariate analysis. Concerns cover correlation, cluster analysis, regression, partial correlation, class selection techniques, map filtering techniques, cross-correlation maps, strategies for optimum sampling design, and search techniques. The manuscript elaborates on examples of geochemical data processing in Africa, mathematical and statistical activity in North America, statistical models for geochemical anomalies, geochemical characterization of tin granites in northern Thailand, and use of pattern classification methods in till geochemistry. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in statistics and data analysis in geochemical prospecting.

Book Marine Mineral Exploration

Download or read book Marine Mineral Exploration written by H. Kunzendorf and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1986-05-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 20 years have seen extensive marine exploration work by the major industrialized countries. Studies have, in part, been concentrated on Pacific manganese nodule occurrences and on massive sulfides on mid-oceanic ridges. An international jurisdictional framework of the sea-bed mineral resources was negotiated by the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III). A most important outcome of this conference was the establishment of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of at least 200 nautical miles for all coastal states and the recognition of a deep-sea regime. Mineral deposits in EEZ areas are fairly unknown; many areas need detailed mapping and mineral exploration, and the majority of coastal or island states with large EEZ areas have little experience in exploration for marine hard minerals. This book describes the systematic steps in marine mineral exploration. Such exploration requires knowledge of mineral deposits and models of their formation, of geophysical and geochemical exploration methods, and of data evaluation and interpretation methods. These topics are described in detail by an international group of authors. A short description is also given of marine research vessels, evaluation of marine exploration examples; and an overview is provided of the jurisdictional situation after UNCLOS III.
