Book excerpt: The contributions of more than six hundred Catholic nuns to the care of Confederate and Union sick and wounded made a critical impact upon nineteenth-century America. Not only did thousands of soldiers directly benefit from the religious sisters' ministrations, but both professional nursing and Catholics' acceptance within mainstream society advanced significantly as a result. In To Bind Up the Wounds, Sister Mary Denis Maher writes this heretofore neglected Civil War chapter in rich detail, telling a riveting story shot with suspicion and prejudice, suffering and self-sacrifice, ingenuity, beneficence, and gratitude.

Book Battlefield Angels

Book excerpt: "The country had only 600 trained nurses at the start of the Civil War. All were Catholic nuns. This is one of the best-kept secrets in our nation's history," Father William Barnaby Faherty once wrote. When the Civil War broke out, the Union and the Confederacy were prepared to fight, but they weren't prepared to care for the wounded that their fighting created. While many people volunteered to care for the soldiers, the only ones with any experience were Catholics sisters. Among the sisters, the most-experienced were the Daughters of Charity based in Emmitsburg, MD. When war broke out, they had already been caring for the sick for decades. However, the brutality of the war would test even their abilities as they ran hospitals, served on troop transports and provided care in battlefield hospitals and ambulances. They even had their own Central House occupied by armies from both sides of the war. The Daughters of Charity had such a high level of trust among the government officials that they were allowed in the early part of the war to move back and forth across the border between the two warring countries. Nor did they betray that trust as they served officers and soldiers, Union and Confederate, with the same level of care. With their wide, white cornettes looking almost like wings, the Daughters of Charity did resemble battlefield angels. The sight of those wing-like cornettes told soldiers that relief was on the way; someone who cared for them was coming.

Book excerpt: The work of American Catholic nuns during the war between the States It is both tragic and inspirational that those who pray for peace, when those prayers have gone unanswered, and motivated by their humanity and a willingness to sacrifice themselves, venture onto fields of conflict to administer to those who desperately need them. This book concerns the work of the Catholic Sisterhoods during the American Civil War. Catholic nuns worked among the sick and wounded on both the Union and Confederate sides, in hospitals, on campaign and even on battlefields--where some of them lost their lives while aiding others. Within these pages readers will learn of The Sisters of Mercy who were with the Irish Brigade in the West, of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, The Sisters of the Holy Cross and others. Here are the exploits of Sister Anthony at Shiloh and of many other nuns during famous battles of the war such as Antietam and Gettysburg. As the author points out, unlike the veterans who wore blue or grey, these sisters never held reunions after the war had ended to keep alive their memories of these terrible times, and so it was fitting that this book was written to memorialise the sacrifice and heroism of these modest women. Originally published in two volumes this special Leonaur edition has combined them for good value. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book Lest We Forget The Sisters of Providence of St Mary of the Woods in Civil War Service

Download or read book Lest We Forget The Sisters of Providence of St Mary of the Woods in Civil War Service written by Mary Theodosia Mug and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sisterhood of Providence originated at Ruille-sur-Loir, France, in 1806, and was organized to meet the pitiful conditions prevailing after the catastrophe of the Great Revolution. The care of disabled victims, and of the sick and suffering of all classes, was traditionary in appeal and purpose of those communities whose foundation lines ran so close to the tremendous upheaval, and there was widespread need of the nurse's devotedness as well as of the educator's arduous toil. The founder of the Sisters of Providence was the Rev. Jacques Dujarie, a confessor of the faith, who was ordained in a cellar and said his first Mass in a barn, and suffered great persecutions throughout the Reign of Terror. The first Mother General of the society was Mile. Josephine Zoe du Roscoat, daughter of Count Casimir du Roscoat, one of the noted exiles of the Revolution. Called the "Angel of Ploermel," for her work among the poor and suffering; of middle age, educated, experienced in the direction of others, and religiously devoted, she was just such a one as Abbe Dujarie needed for his newly-founded community; and kind Providence sent her to him.

Book Angels of the Battlefield

Download or read book Angels of the Battlefield written by George Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angels of the Battlefield: A History of the Labors of the Catholic Sisterhoods in the Late Civil War The Sisters soothed the restless patients, bathed the fevered brows and moistened the parched lips with a touch impartially tender. The attitude of the men them selves was not without interest. Many of them had never seen a Sister before; the majority of thorn looked upon the Sisters with distrust and suspicion. The change that came in a short while came as actual knowledge comes when it dissipates prejudice and misrepresentation. They could not help but be impressed with the quiet demeanor and the self-sacrifice of the Sisters, and unreasoning dis like and bigotry soon gave way to natural respect and es teem. Book Soldiers of the Cross the Authoritative Text

Download or read book Soldiers of the Cross the Authoritative Text written by David Power Conyngham and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Students of the Civil War, Catholic history, and women’s history, among others, will welcome [Soldiers of the Cross] . . . Brilliantly edited.” —Randall M. Miller, co-editor of Religion and the American Civil War Shortly after the Civil War, an Irish Catholic journalist and war veteran named David Power Conyngham began compiling the stories of Catholic chaplains and nuns who served during the conflict. His manuscript, Soldiers of the Cross, is the fullest record written during the nineteenth century of the Catholic Church’s involvement in the Civil War, as it documents the service of fourteen chaplains and six female religious communities, representing both North and South. Many of Conyngham’s chapters contain new insights into the clergy during the war that are unavailable elsewhere, either during his time or ours, making the work invaluable to Catholic and Civil War historians. The introduction contains over a dozen letters written between 1868 and 1870 from high-ranking Confederate and Union officials, such as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Union Surgeon General William Hammond, and Union General George B. McClellan, who praise the church’s services during the war. Chapters on Fathers William Corby and Peter P. Cooney, as well as the Sisters of the Holy Cross, cover subjects relatively well known to Catholic scholars, yet other chapters are based on personal letters and other important primary sources that have not been published prior to this book. Due to Conyngham’s untimely death, Soldiers of the Cross remained unpublished, hidden away in an archive for more than a century. Now annotated and edited so as to be readable and useful to scholars and modern readers, this long-awaited publication of Soldiers of the Cross is a fitting presentation of Conyngham’s last great work

Book Two Sisters Irish Nuns in the American Civil War

Download or read book Two Sisters Irish Nuns in the American Civil War written by Michael Ferrill and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon the real-life story and experience of two Irish sisters, leaving their homeland in the 1840s and their coming to America. Their future is secured in America. In time, they enter a Religious Community learning to become both a teacher and then as a Nursing Nun during the American Civil War. It is based in part on true events of the day, and confirmed historical records, letters, received and written during the Civil War (1861-1865). The Irish emigrants from Ireland and the 1st & 2d Generation Irish Americans numbered well over 200,000 men for the Union Army and 40,000 men for the Confederate Army. The Civil War in America gave the Catholic Church the ability to grow its faith and accept its teachings. It allowed and promoted the acceptance of their Irish members. A great deal of Military History has been written about the men who served in these Armies. The Battles that were fought, the cities and towns across the nation. This is a story about those women who served on the Battlefields of this American Civil War.
