Book A Place called Nunavut

Download or read book A Place called Nunavut written by Kim van Dam and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Nunavut Territory was created in the Canadian Arctic. The area is about 50 times as large as the Netherlands, and is inhabited by a population of 30,000. 85% of the population is Inuit, the indigenous people in this area. The central questions in this research project are what place or regional identities are being ascribed to Nunavut by different groups of people from within and from outside the region, and how do these identities work? In the process of the formation of the region, the territorial Government of Nunavut is an important actor in producing a regional identity that is based on the cultural identity of the Inuit: the Inuit Homeland. This 'official' regional identity creates a symbolic unity that is important in linking people to the region, and through which the land, the history and the people are united in a new territorial membership. However, there is no reason to assume that there is only one regional identity for Nunavut. Different individuals or groups of people from within and from outside the region, such as the people who live in one of the 25 communities and those who work for the multinational mining corporations or as tourist operators, are also involved in the production and reproduction of identities for Nunavut. They represent Nunavut for example as a place to live, a resource region, a wilderness or as a sustainable place. Nunavut Government also links these alternative identities to the area, because as a government they are not only interested in protecting Inuit culture but also aim to modernize the economy in order to enhance prosperity and well-being. As such the place identities are hybrid, and identities that before were produced only by external actors are now also being produced by internal actors, and vice versa.

Book Traditions Traps and Trends

Download or read book Traditions Traps and Trends written by Jarich Oosten and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer of knowledge is a key issue in the North as Indigenous Peoples meet the ongoing need to adapt to cultural and environmental change. In eight essays, experts survey critical issues surrounding the knowledge practices of the Inuit of northern Canada and Greenland and the Northern Sámi of Scandinavia, and the difficulties of transferring that knowledge from one generation to the next. Reflecting the ongoing work of the Research Group Circumpolar Cultures, these multidisciplinary essays offer fresh understandings through history and across geography as scholars analyze cultural, ecological, and political aspects of peoples in transition. Traditions, Traps and Trends is an important book for students and scholars in anthropology and ethnography and for everyone interested in the Circumpolar North. Contributors: Cunera Buijs, Frédéric Laugrand, Barbara Helen Miller, Thea Olsthoorn, Jarich Oosten, Willem Rasing, Kim van Dam, Nellejet Zorgdrager

Book Resources Rock

Download or read book Resources Rock written by Malvin Spooner and published by Insomniac Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resources Rock is an easy-to-read introduction to the resource sector as it gears up to take off for the first time in over two decades. Readers will learn how to invest in natural resource stocks, including diamonds, gold, base metals, oil and gas, forestry and fertilizer companies. For years, the average prices of shares in resource sector stocks, for everything from gold to diamonds to forest products, have been at record low levels. But it's not going to stay that way forever. North American and European economies are showing signs of making a long-awaited rebound in 2005, so manufacturers will have to start buying raw resources as fast as they can in order to meet the needs of their customers. Metal prices (gold, silver, etc.) have been rising in the past year and will continue to rise.

Book Reading the Archive of Earth s Oxygenation

Download or read book Reading the Archive of Earth s Oxygenation written by Victor Melezhik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth’s present-day environments are the outcome of a 4.5 billion year period of evolution reflecting the interaction of global-scale geological and biological processes. Punctuating that evolution were several extraordinary events and episodes that perturbed the entire Earth system and led to the creation of new environmental conditions, sometimes even to fundamental changes in how planet Earth operated. Volume 3: Global Events and the Fennoscandian Arctic Russia - Drilling Earth Project represents another kind of illustrated journey through the early Palaeoproterozoic, provided by syntheses, reviews and summaries of the current state of our understanding of a series of global events that resulted in a fundamental change of the Earth System from an anoxic to an oxic state. The book discusses traces of life, possible causes for the Huronian-age glaciations, addresses radical changes in carbon, sulphur and phosphorus cycles during the Palaeoproterozoic, and provides a comprehensive description and a rich photo-documentation of the early Palaeoproterozoic supergiant, petrified oil-field. Terrestrial environments are characterised through a critical review of available data on weathered and calichified surfaces and travertine deposits. Potential implementation of Ca, Mg, Sr, Fe, Mo, U and Re-Os isotope systems for deciphering Palaeoproterozoic seawater chemistry and a change in the redox-state of water and sedimentary columns are discussed. The volume considers in detail the definition of the oxic atmosphere, possible causes for the oxygen rise, and considers the oxidation of terrestrial environment not as a single event, but a slow-motion process lasting over hundreds of millions of years. Finally, the book provides a roadmap as to how the FAR-DEEP cores may facilitate future interesting science and provide a new foundation for education in earth-science community. Welcome to the illustrative journey through one of the most exciting periods of planet Earth!

Book Structural Control of Mineral Deposits

Download or read book Structural Control of Mineral Deposits written by Alain Chauvet and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Structural Control” remains a crucial point that frequently lacks in any scientific and/or economic analysis of ore deposits, whatever their type and class. The case of lode deposits is exemplary, although also other deposits, like breccia pipe, stockwerk, massive sulphides, skarn, etc., can, surprisingly, be concerned. Several concepts like the gold-bearing shear zone have not proven valid during the last few decades in terms of our understanding of gold deposit and have been totally abandoned. Additionally, the relationships between magmatism, regional tectonic context, and mineralization remain uncertain and have been debated in several recent publications. This demonstrates that this issue is still relevant, and its solution may help in the distinction between intrusion-related and orogenic deposits. In this Special Issue, we particularly invite any case study of mineral deposits, in which it has been demonstrated that structural geology may have a significant role in the establishment of the deposit model of formation and/or on exploration and exploitation programs. Examples in which the structural model diverges from those described in the classical literature are particularly welcomed, including studies in which relationships with magmatism can be suspected and/or demonstrated. Indeed, all cases that illustrate concepts that differ from the classic ones and from theoretical models may represent significant contributions to this volume.

Book Nueltin Granites and Mafic Rocks in the Tebesjuak Lake Map Area Nunavut

Download or read book Nueltin Granites and Mafic Rocks in the Tebesjuak Lake Map Area Nunavut written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tebesjuak Lake map area (NTS 65O), in Nunavut, is underlain by extensive intrusive and extrusive rocks of the Kivalliq Igneous Suite (Wharton Group, Nueltin Granite, and various mafic rocks). Spanning an age range of 1.74-1.77 billion years, these rocks are part of a broad anorogenic event that occurred throughout a large part of the western Churchill province. New geochemical, petrological, and geophysical data acquired during the GEM1-U project has now accurately established space-time trends in magma composition, the physical form of an important bimodal intrusion, and the relationship of Kivalliq rocks to some mineral showings in the map area.

Book excerpt: Perhaps because of being a math teacher with an avid interest in cosmology, the author has acquired an expectancy of alternatives such as "if not real, then imaginary" all the way to "if not matter, then antimatter." This has led to the "what if factor" demonstrated in his novel. "What if" (to the first power) a man can hear sounds emanating from paintings in a museum? To what end, you might ask: perhaps a hobby of cataloging masterpieces based on tones from one to four? But "what if" (squared), in the presence of a foreign object the original painting becomes silent, as silent as a movie poster or even a reproduction. What did the painting have that the poster didn't have? What, then, did it lose? Is this cause for alarm? In Shell Tones, it is!
