Book excerpt: Excerpt from Numisma, Vol. 1: An Occasional Numismatic Pamphlet; November, 1943 Among the numerous coinages for colonies and possessions of the British Empire there occur issues of minor colns which are materially the same, in type and legend, as contemporary English issues. These coins occur from the reign of George IV through that of George V and are properly attributed to Ceylon, Malta, or British Guiana and the West Indies. It appears more convenient to list these pieces according to the reign in which issued, since the monarch's name appears on the coin and that of the colony does not. Moreover, these pieces are frequently listed as coins of England, and are thus grouped by reigns. The present paper attempts to gather information from a number of sources and to overcome the confusion caused by earlier omission or mis-attribution of these pieces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Numisma, Vol. 1: An Occasional Numismatic Pamphlet; October 1940 Mementoes of a once flourishing industry on the island of Ceylon, the tokens issued by the proprietors of coffee mills are about all that is left to recall the days when Colombo was the cen tre of a prosperous business that has all but disappeared. Tea planting has replaced coffee cultivation and the mills have either been pulled down or converted to other uses since the collapse of the coffee industry in the eighties. These tokens comprise a considerable series that is little known to collectors in the United States. In 1895, B. Lowsley published a paper in the Numismatic Chronicle on the Coins and Tokens of Ceylon, based on his research during residence on the island. This paper is very complete as to the coffee tokens, only a few varieties having come to the writer's notice that are not in cluded. A large part of the information herein published comes from this paper to which persons desiring a more extensive treat ment are referred.
