Book Numerical Study of Support Interferences on the SOAR Separation Wind Tunnel Test

Download or read book Numerical Study of Support Interferences on the SOAR Separation Wind Tunnel Test written by Alberto Ghiraldo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process of support design for wind tunnel models and the evaluation of interferences effect are described in this chapter. The work was performed at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI; Sint-Genesius-Rode, Belgium), and it was commissioned by the S3-Swiss Space System company. The work concerns the separation wind tunnel test of the Suborbital Aircraft Reusable (SOAR) vehicle from an Airbus commercial plane carrier. The supports are designed for future separation wind tunnel test of the SOAR version V10 in the VKI-S1 wind tunnel. They are designed in scale 1:180 for the test of the SOAR in the presence of the Airbus and in scale 1:80 for the SOAR alone test. Two different shapes of support (circular and elliptic) are tested in each case. First there are the supports designed, then the results of the finite element method (FEM) static structural analysis and vibrational analysis, and finally the result of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) campaign. The flow and the force interferences caused by the support are investigated by comparing simulations with and without support. The behavior of the two shapes and of the dimensional variations are investigated at an angle of attack between 0° and 15° and at Mach 0.7.

Book Evaluation of the Aerodynamic Interference of the Tunnel 4T Captive Trajectory System on the Separation Characteristics of the BLU 27 Store

Download or read book Evaluation of the Aerodynamic Interference of the Tunnel 4T Captive Trajectory System on the Separation Characteristics of the BLU 27 Store written by Wallace Luchuk and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of an experimental program to evaluate the effect of the 4T Captive Trajectory System on the separation characteristics of typical stores. The models selected as being generally representative of external stores were the modified BLU-27B/B configuration with and without fins. The aircraft model selected for this test was the F-111. To assess the aerodynamic interference of the Captive Trajectory System on the store and its trajectory, four sting lengths were used to position the store model at varying distances from the support system. Data were obtained at Mach numbers of 0.4, 0.8, 0.9, 1.1, and 1.2. Captive trajectories simulating store separation from the aircraft model were obtained; forces on the store were measured while the store was moved vertically away from the marriage position; and force data on the store were obtained as it was yawed in a location as far removed as possible from the aircraft model. It was concluded that the Captive Trajectory System has little or no effect on the store loads and trajectory development. (Author).

Book Progress in Gas Turbine Performance

Download or read book Progress in Gas Turbine Performance written by Ernesto Benini and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a remarkable difference in the research and development regarding gas turbine technology for transportation and power generation. The former remains substantially florid and unaltered with respect to the past as the superiority of air-breathing engines compared to other technologies is by far immense. On the other hand, the world of gas turbines (GTs) for power generation is indeed characterized by completely different scenarios in so far as new challenges are coming up in the latest energy trends, where both a reduction in the use of carbon-based fuels and the raising up of renewables are becoming more and more important factors. While being considered a key technology for base-load operations for many years, modern stationary gas turbines are in fact facing the challenge to balance electricity from variable renewables with that from flexible conventional power plants. The book intends in fact to provide an updated picture as well as a perspective view of some of the abovementioned issues that characterize GT technology in the two different applications: aircraft propulsion and stationary power generation. Therefore, the target audience for it involves design, analyst, materials and maintenance engineers. Also manufacturers, researchers and scientists will benefit from the timely and accurate information provided in this volume. The book is organized into three main sections including 10 chapters overall: (i) Gas Turbine and Component Performance, (ii) Gas Turbine Combustion and (iii) Fault Detection in Systems and Materials.

Book Facing the Heat Barrier

Download or read book Facing the Heat Barrier written by T. A. Heppenheimer and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonics is the study of flight at speeds where aerodynamic heating dominates the physics of the problem. It is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is this important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric reentry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline, but work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well.
