The movement of these rings in the region of the Gulf Stream is well studied and has been ascribed to the following physical mechanisms: (1) the beta effect on an isolated ring, (2) advection of a ring in a recirculation regime, (3) downstream advection of a ring in contact with a jet, and (4) vorticity advection associated with the jet and eddy interaction. Utilizing a two layer, nonlinear primitive equation model, an examination of eddy movement is conducted, with focus on eddy/jet interaction. A series of numerical experiments is performed in which the initial separation distance between eddy and jet is varied. The model demonstrates that vortex movement is strongly related to the proximity of the vortex to the jet. It also is demonstrated that observed movement is not solely dependent on the beta effect nor on advection due to recirculation. Keywords: Gulf stream, Gulf stream vortices, Numerical simulators. Book excerpt: In this paper differences and anomalies in west coast seasonal flow structures have been highlighted. In particular, it was emphasized that flow off Washington has significant differences from that of Oregon; namely, during summer, flow at mid-shelf is more poleward off Washington, and during winter, flow on the inner-shelf is more equatorward off Washington than off Oregon. The former result may be related to the poleward decrease in the longshelf wind stress; the latter result may be related to the presence of the Columbia River plume. Off southern California the near-surface flow over the shelf is more persistently equatorward than that off Washington . Conversely, the flow over the slope in the upper 100 m of the water column is more persistently poleward than that off washington. Also, the undercurrent structure, that is, a subsurface maximum, is maintained at least from summer to early winter off southern California (no data are yet available from spring), but only during summer and early fall off washington. We note that the seasonal cycle of vertical shear in the two locations is similar, although a reversal in sign sometimes occurs off Washington. Book excerpt: The discovery of multiple nearly zonal oceanic jets enriches the classical view of mid-latitude ocean circulation, which was thought to be dominated by turbulent eddies and large-scale oceanic gyres. These jets emerge as a result of baroclinic instability and are maintained by baroclinic eddies. Potential importance of interactions of these ocean currents with major topographic features, such as the mid-Atlantic ridge, calls for the studies of the effects of bottom topography on the dynamics of eddies and the eddy-driven jets. The importance of bottom topography in the linear baroclinic instability of zonal flows on the beta-plane is examined by using analytical calculations and a quasi-geostrophic (QG) eddy-resolving numerical model. The particular focus is on the effects of a zonal topographic slope, which are compared with the effects of a meridional slope. A zonal slope always destabilizes background zonal flows that are otherwise stable in the absence of topography, regardless of the slope magnitude, whereas the meridional slopes stabilize/destabilize zonal flows only through changing the lower-level background potential vorticity (PV) gradient beyond a known critical value. Growth rates, phase speeds and vertical structure of the growing solutions strongly depend on the slope magnitude. In the numerical simulations configured with an isolated meridional ridge, unstable modes develop on both sides of the ridge and propagate eastward of the ridge, in agreement with our analytical results. In the second part of this study, we describe a novel mechanism for the generation of oceanic alternating jets by topographic ridges. The dynamics of these jets is examined using a baroclinic QG model configured with an isolated meridional ridge. Zonal topographic slopes of the ridge lead to the formation of a system of currents, consist- ing of mesoscale eddies, meridional currents over the ridge, and multiple zonal jets in the far field. Dynamical analysis shows that transient eddies are vital in sustaining the deep meridional currents, which in turn play a key role in the upper-layer PV balance. The zonal jets owe their existence to the eddy forcing over the ridge but are maintained by the Reynolds and form stresses in the far field. Locally nonzonal mean currents are shown to produce zonal jets in the far field, but the presence of local vorticity source appears to be the truly fundamental cause of jet existence. We conclude that local nonzonality of the mean PV contours, due to either a topographic ridge or a nonzonal background flow, can generate multiple zonal jets through a remote mechanism. Lastly, we explore the relationship between eddies and striations in a baroclinic double gyre ocean. Results show that alternating vertically coherent striations exist in the eastern part of the double gyre in short time mean field. Both the baroclinic QG model simulation and the analysis of altimetry sea level anomalies suggest that striations are intrinsically associated with eddy trains. Eddy vorticity forcing is closely associated with the striations and tends to drive the striations to drift meridionally. The concept of eddies being intrinsically related to striations helps to come up with a better parameterization scheme to represent the effects of eddies/striations in comprehensive models.

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The study of eastern ocean boundary currents has been principally restricted to the Pacific and Atlantic ocean regions. The traditional view of the circulation near eastern ocean boundaries is that upwelling-favourable winds force surface waters offshore, leading to upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich subsurface water at the coast, the formation and offshore advection of a coastal front, and the generation of alongshore currents, generally having an equatorward surface flow and a poleward undercurrent. The eastern ocean boundary system of the southern Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Australia, is unique compared with these regions because a warm, poleward surface flow, known as the Leeuwin Current, dominates the dynamics over the continental shelf. Satellite imagery has shown the Leeuwin Current consists of a complex system of meanders, jet-like streams, and eddies, and has a seasonal and interannual variability. The oceanic circulation of the region between Carnarvon (latitude 25°S) and Jurien Bay (latitude 31°S) was examined using observational and remotely sensed data in conjunction with a detailed numerical modelling study. The model was validated using in situ ADCP and CTD data, and the horizontal eddy viscosity parameterization was tested against field observations. ... The resulting offshore meander grew laterally, shallowed, and closed to form an anticlockwise eddy to the original clockwise eddy’s south, forming a characteristic LC eddy pair (dipole). The model demonstrated the LC and Leeuwin Undercurrent (LUC) coupling played an important role in the onset of eddies at both sites. When an energy diagnostic scheme was used, the dominant instability process linked to the anticlockwise eddy’s development at site 1 was a mixed mode barotropic and baroclinic instability. The baroclinic instability’s source was the available potential energy stored within the mean lateral density gradient. The LC’s meandering southerly flow interacting with the LUC’s northerly subsurface flow generated the horizontal shear that sourced the barotropic instability. The dominant instability process at site 2 was baroclinic in origin. Possible links between the eddy field dynamics and the shelfslope region’s alongshore topographic variability were considered. The results of a suite of five model runs, differing only in the specification of bottom topography, were contrasted to investigate the effects. Except for the expected alongshore variability, delay in the onset of instabilities, varying growth rates, and some differences in the dominant wavebands’ mesoscale patterns, the overall impression was the response was similar.
